I am on a soft food diet and have been able to eat just soup and ice cream for the last months. I would go to Handel's as it was good quality and price for the four pints. However after many pints later today is the last day. I will be going back to the grocery store ice cream. The problem is there was hair in my ice cream. A long hair. Over the last visits it has been soft and the pints are very messy. I hope they retrain their staff to avoid this, but it was one of a few food sources for me, it's just disappointing. read more

What I learned about death this week is that the last sense to leave us is our hearing. In her last moments, my wife could not swallow solid food. My son talked to her about Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream which was her favorite. She whispered her agreement. It was the 4th of July, it was a hot summer day, so I chose my mission of getting her some. I found a beloved chain called Handels Homemade Ice Cream in Downingtown, PA. Navigation was a challenge due to a few blocks cut off for a townie gathering. Round trip was an hour and I prayed she wouldn't pass before my return. I fed my love her final "meal" of slightly melted mint chocolate chip ice cream and it was met with as much approval as a baby bird swallowing that first half digested worm. Today was my first and last visit to Handel's Downingtown. The woman who waited on me was very rude. DQ is down the road from my house I will spend my money there. A twenty minute wait at 11 am to experiece poor customer service does not settle well with me. read more

I have been to Handles Downingtown several times and never had a bad experience until last night. The gentleman who took our order was super nice, respectful and helpful. We ordered a milkshake for our 4 year son and requested an extra small cup so I could share it with him. As you know there are only two sizes for milkshakes and both were too big for our son. After placing our order the clerk did give us an extra cup but was then berated by another employee( tall, heavy set blond woman) in front of everyone in the store. It was really disappointing to see him get in trouble for something so small. I would have gladly paid for the cup had I known it was such a big deal. It was just upsetting to see how the gentleman was treated in front of everybody for just trying to help and keep a costumer happy! read more

After having successfully ordered online for delivery one night, we ventured out today for a mid day stop at Handels. Parking and the line were not yet too bad at 1pm. Store doesn't have pictures or descriptions of their ice cream so the process can be slowed up by not knowing what each flavor entails, esp as unlike other shops, at the front counter you can't peek into the freezers. Pints and scoops were made fresh on order. Tasted the butter pecan (so buttery), the orange cream dream (nostalgia in a pint), chocoholic peanut butter ripple (dh's fave) and ice cream sandwiches (too small in my opinion for the price). Tables outside under the shade of the building were available for those not wanting to dash home. So glad to have handels nearby, but can see the wait getting pretty long most nights and wonder how it will be when school is out... read more

Visited this location after an event at 8.45 p.m., and the place was still packed. Easily accessible from Lancaster Ave, this place has a good parking lot and sufficient seating outside. The staff working here is very friendly. The menu is kept easy to order. The interior of the store is kept well and maintained, and this is a new store too. The person who served me as a doordash driver was so incredibly rude. She was very snippy and required that I confirm pickup in front of her. I told her there was no way I was doing that because other stores have done the same thing. If you get somebody else, it's a good experience. I do not get the hype. The ice cream is exceedingly average. There are much better places with local ice cream nearby (Scooped and the Farmhouse Creamery to name two). I think people are distracted by the array of flavors and fail to notice the ice cream doesn't really taste very good. I have lived in Downingtown my whole life and Handel's opens right when I'm moving. I was eager to try the ice cream because every time I drive by, there is a long line out the door. Below is my experience. Parking: Free, but limited as it's shared with Pizza Hut. Seating: Outdoor seating only Service: As I mentioned before, every time I drive by the shop, it's always lines out of the door. Today was an exception so I decided to take the opportunity. I was a bit disappointed in the service. It was around 2:30pm and there were only about 7 customers in front of me. There was one cashier and two scoopers. I waited approximately 8-10 minutes in line. There was a group of about 5 children and one parent, so I assumed that was the reason for the wait. When I got closer, I realized that it wasn't just because there was a large order, but because one of the fair skin scoopers was working very slowly. She looked miserable and wasn't really hustling to get customers orders completed. The other two girls, another fair skin girl and darker skin girl were pleasant to interact with. I think that there needs to be an additional worker to help with orders, especially since there were customers ordering multiple flavor pints, which takes more time. Quality: I enjoyed my ice cream. I kept it simple with small chocolate chip cookie dough on a sugar cone. The ice cream was not overly sweet and full of cookie dough and chocolate chips. The small is two and a half scoops, which is more than enough and at a fair price of $5.35. Cleanliness: The shop is beautifully designed and very clean. There were no unpleasant odors and it is air conditioned. Overall, I am giving this experience a 3 out of 5 because of the long wait and an employee that seemed unhappy about being there. I have gone there a couple of times since it opened, the ice cream is good but the last couple of times the service & ice cream have been disappointing. I ordered a scoop & got half scoops. If I order a medium or larger I would expect no to be about the finish it in more 6 tablespoons. Maybe their no skimping sign should be taken down. The ice cream is good but the service is horrendous. I went in on a week day afternoon, there were approximately 5 employees behind the counter. The customer at the register had a serious case of the "Well, I'm just not sure what I want - itis." Hemming and hawing on and on over what to choose, then customer went on to complain about the size of the scoops, and the staff just stood there all of them gaping at this ONE CUSTOMER. Not a single employee moved to another register to take the next person in line. And the line is getting longer. After about 5 minutes, someone (a manager?) jumped in to take the next person in line. The staff need some training on how to be proactive, step in to keep the line moving and the customers happy. Ice cream is good, but I'm not sure I'll be back in. read more

The ice cream is very good. The wait time too long. A person who was presumed to be the manager was busy doing other things. So I gave up and walked out. While the line was not long, it simply took the two servers a little while to fill the orders. I feel that the manager could have paused his other work to help the customers. It's not just their policy that when you buy $10 worth of ice cream they only allow you 2 flavors, it's the arrogant way their staff tells you NO!...it's corporate policy that you only get 2 flavors.
