Best music venue in Carbondale. Hangar 9 has been a long time favorite for both students and locals. It has a lot more than just music. Good cheap drinks at the bar. The place has a long history in town. A lot of fun has gone on here. It's one of the few good places in town to see live music. This kind of looks like an airplane hangar from the outside. Inside it looks more like a dive bar. Lots of room in here though. Good place even when there's not music, because you can drink at the bar. It's about $4 for the cheapest cocktails. Whiskey and whatever. Good specials on pints and buckets. There's no food but you can bring in stuff. Have to make an update about this business. It has closed. This is sad for the community, it's a place with lots of history, so you'll have to go to some other bar or wherever. read more

This is normally my go-to bar, but Paige the bartender completely ruined my experience on Saturday night by being blatantly rude to us. This has happened on multiple occasions- we (two girls) were standing at the bar for at least a few minutes, while she did nothing accept for standing by her monitor and passively aggressively WAVING at us. So, TAUNTING us, basically. It wasn't until the other bartender (Haley I believe) came over and helped us out, and Paige IMMEDIATELY flocked to the men who came up to the bar after us to serve them. I'm not sure if I'm missing a social cue here or something, but Haley already seemed like she was busy with enough customers. So not only were we IGNORED, but were quite literally bullied by one of the bartenders. Terrible service, and it sort of messed up our whole night. read more

Had a glass smashed next to me from the second floor on my way to the bathroom on the first floor. Almost hit me on the head. This was only 20 minutes after arriving. Guess I should have said something because after going to the bathroom was grabbed by the back of my jacket. Did not ask me to leave first thing but resorted to pushing and pulling me around until deciding to inform me that I threw the glass. Don't go here they will not hear you out and pick anyone to be kicked out as long as it's someone. Heard from a mutual that the bouncer with the glasses and beard (Imeny) has a historic agenda against asians and a massive power trip so no wonder he picked on me. Would have been nice to get refunded the cover at the very least since I didn't even get to grab more than one drink. Extremely disappointed in how the situation was handled and the fact that a 200lb+ man felt the need to put his hands on me. read more

Went to karaoke last night with my partner and put our names in. The KJ allowed the same 10 people go up and sing three times before we were called up to go sing once. This is not an exaggeration. Then when we finally did get to sing the volume on our mic was so quiet you couldn't hear yourself at all. Super disappointed! I've been here before and it was a great time and a very cool bar. I get taking care of your locals but it was such a poor experience. Don't tell me I signed up late and that's why it's taking awhile. It's taking awhile because you let all your locals sing a bunch times before you allowed new singers to sing their first time. We go to karaoke all the time and that's a very poor practice. read more

This place had the workings of a great night. For only a 5 cover, we were ready for salsa night. However, an Interesting thing happened. A bartender named Brendin made a conscious effort not to serve my friends and I. When we asked for service he refused to take our order. We asked another staff member and he said that Brendin felt like we asked for a drink rudely. Although, the exact words were, " hey can we order drinks". We just walked into the place. He literally refused to make eye contact with us. He then went across the room numerous times and still never served us. Then he never cleaned the area of the previous guest. All around, I felt disappointed being the only black women in the room and the only people not being acknowledged. I will not return. read more

If Liz Y. did not work here, I would give this place 5 stars. I've never met someone who is not only mean and nasty, but is really bad at her job. It's annoying that she works here like every night. And every time, there's 3 people waiting for her for 10 minutes, to simply close out. While having worked in the service industry at a high volume bar, I can confidently say that Liz Y. works slower than a snail on Xanax. If she was mean, but was really good at her job, I wouldn't be leaving this review. But she's mean/rude/a jerk AND sucks at her job. Please get rid of her. This re-built version of The Hangar is pretty nice. There are two levels and lots of areas all with a view of the stage. There are a variety of live music acts on several nights, and cover charges are often reasonable. The bar downstairs is very comfortable. The bartenders are attentive and nice. When the weather is nice, they can open the garage doors out front. read more

I have not been here in years but god do I love and miss this place. I used to get drunk at 4pm and stay drunk at 2am here. I used to punch people as a cocktail waitress and it was "OK" by my boss here. I also used to be able to carry 11 beer bottles through a mosh pit but are those days way over. I should really review this place after I have been to a show. Though since I rarely get to Carbondale anymore this is it. I have been to the new Hanger 9 location just twice. They really worked hard on the new building after the old one collapsed. A long bar as you walk in the front, with some pool tables, an upstairs, and tables off to the side. Two TV's turned to sports, and music playing of coarse. There is a very modern and industrial feel here compared to the old dump. They have a nice beer selection. Especially for this college town. Some Founders, Goose Island, Bells. Very nice. Service is kind of stand offish, not a big deal. Just get me my drinks. I really need to make an effort to see some music here next time I come through, and I will update then (I miss seeing the Woodbox Gang here). read more

Hands down, my favorite bar in Carbondale! Me and my friends hit up every Tuesday night for Dollar Night and Karaoke Night. This place has the friendliest crowd in town. Drinks can be a bit overpriced on a typical day, but keep your eyes open for their specials. There is usually a variety of bands that will play. Great patio and upstairs area. While Hangar 9 is by far one of the nicest and most locally influential bars I have had the pleasure of frequenting in the Carbondale area it's otherwise legendary reputation has been tarnished. This blemish has been caused ,in my opinion, by the rudeness and flat out pushiness of a minority of the bar staff. While paying for a drink at this usually relaxed bar I was informed by a bar tender that the ticket in front of me was "a contract that shouldn't be left blank" little did he know I had left a cash tip earlier and his demand for more money had lost Hanger 9 a customer forever. Don't go to this bar if you are not willing to be accused of cheapness and shook down for more money. Worst customer service. I emailed them about a problem I had and they never emailed me back to fix it just told me they will work on it. They also have very slow and disrespectful service at the bar. I have no problem waiting for a drink but when me and my friend wait in line for 15 min and the bartender skips us multiple times for the guys standing behind us it's frustrating. She did it on multiple times to the point the guys behind us ended up buying us the drink we wanted because she was ignoring us. read more

Visited Hangar 9 for the first time since before the original Hangar 9 was destroyed by a roof collapse several years ago. Immediately struck by the cool design of the place, which had a wood-based hanging scaffold-like sculpture near the ceiling. There was seating above the main stage where you could sit and overlook the bands. Sound was great, and the staff was very friendly. The bands we saw were high-quality nationally-touring bands. Hangar 9 is a great venue to see music in a small college town. Truly a rare gem. Coming from Chicago, where there are dozens of venues to choose from to see music every night, Hangar 9 was very impressive. Wish there was such a comfortable, clean and inviting place in Chicago. Keep going to Hangar 9 and you'll hear some excellent music. read more

This bar usually holds a lot of independent and underground artists ranging from rock to funk and sometimes a hip hop artist will appear. OK drink specials and service. The parking situation is cumbersome because it shares the lot with the train station, Stix, Jimmy Johns, Wise Guys and Sidetracks customers. It gets pretty crowded for being such a small place. The crowd is generally very undiverse. You probably won't see a lot of fights here. There are some older bar goers here as well as hippies. Overall it's a chill place to catch a concert if you find a band you are into. read more

As a regular dollar night customer, I looked at Hangar as a perfect place to celebrate my best friend's 21st. I was wrong. I arrived, order drinks and opened my tab, as usual. After we finished our first round I arrived back at the same spot. Apparently this was the area where cocktail waitresses pick up their orders. We're an understanding group, had someone told us this in advance, there would be no problem with us moving elsewhere. Love the feel of this bar. The installation hanging from the ceiling is cool looking. I used to come here all the time in college for dollar night, karaoke, and open mic nights. Not to be THAT person but I liked when not as many people knew about karaoke night because my friends and I were able to sing more, lol, but the larger crowd is welcome. This is a truly awesome spot and probably my favorite bar in town. They easily have the best tap selection in town every week. They also have the best music and sound quality of any place in town. The building itself is just awesome too, very modern. I'm a fan of the big door open in the summer to the patio. They have a good beer selection, good crowds, good bands, and an overall better vibe(more chill) than Pinch. There is a fat brunette bartender that is an absolute joke. I went for a couple craft beers and this mediocre bartender made me wait 25 minutes for a can of beer because he kept serving everyone after me. When I asked for his help, he flat out yelled at me that his job is very difficult. I know astrophysicists that don't complain about how hard their job is like this lazy bum Hangar hired off the corner. He yelled at me and made me wait around 15 minutes. As soon as I waved my money and demanded service, I received the worst service I've ever seen. He threw the beer down so it spilled everywhere. For a grown man, I do not expect such a childish temper tantrum. None of the other bartenders were useful either in their jobs of getting drinks for customers because either they're flirting with customers or avoiding their jobs. read more

I decided to take my mom out last night for dollar night and karaoke. We were told that karaoke started at 9 so we arrived around 9:30 to find that no karaoke was was being done yet so we went out to the patio and ordered drinks. We were going to wait for karaoke to start, but it never did. Later we were told that it was broken. We were disappointed about that but the drinks were good, so we decided to stay awhile longer. We ended up leaving because it took forever to get drinks because of the large crowd. They should have more people working when they know a lot of people are going to be there. The poor waitress was running around gathering orders and taking back empty glasses, but she was the only one doing that and was way overworked. We left her a good tip which I am sure was split between all the bartenders.. which is fine but I wish I could have just given it to her by herself for doing a wonderful job. I gave 2 stars because there is not enough seating for everyone and there weren't enough bartenders to serve everyone in a reasonable amount of time. I stood at the bar for about 20 minutes just to pay my tab so we could go to another bar. I will not be returning. read more

Waitressd at the "original" *new Hanger9 for 7 mos-while a student. The 2 owners had been in Vietnam war & opened this "metal hanger" bar, a band every night! A couple nights-no cover & Tues $1 beers. After closing/wiping tables-2-3am, we could take 2 bottles of any beer home. Live music-the orig. East Street Band, etc. At times, some rough biker types. Best beer selection in town. Went on a Wednesday for flight night and sampled multiple brews. Bar is the cleanest in town and the service is excellent. The night we went was also trivia night. I recently moved back to the area and couldn't wait to get back to Hangar 9...my old stomping ground. Oh my. Things have gone downhill in the past few years. There were two bartenders working on a Friday night. A small brown haired girl was busting her bottom. A larger blonde girl was letting a group of guys grab at her breast, while laughing hysterically and ignoring everyone at the bar with cash in hand. It took over 15 minutes to get a drink from the hard working girl. She was the only one waiting on customers. Upon my next (and final) attempt to get a drink here, I was helped by the flirtatious bartender who was RUDE, RUDE, RUDE and proceeded to short change me (by accident, I believe). When I pointed out her error she told me I was wrong and screamed NEXT over my head. When I counted out the money to show her, she rolled her eyes but did turn around to check the math.....using her fingers...TWICE. She then proceeded to correct her mistake without an apology. She just shot me a withering look. I will definitely be finding somewhere else to spend my money. There is no excuse for incompetence, unprofessionalism and RUDENESS. There are a million people out there that need a job...find better bartenders. You're a BAR and people (like me) are willing to regularly spend quite a bit of money if they feel appreciated and welcome. read more
