I have a shellfish allergy since I was very young and whenever I eat out, I take care to avoid any menu item that mentions shrimp. I was invited to Hanoi Old Quarter by a friend. I agreed without knowing what Hanoi food entails, and upon getting seated and looking at the menu, I learned that there are very few menu items that do not contain seafood. I opted for number 12, the bun thang, as the menu described it as "Hanoi chicken combo rice vermicelli soup". I repeat, there was NO indication that this dish contains shrimp. The dish was served, I took a sip, then felt my allergy symptoms flare up. I was then informed that bun thang is served in a chicken/shrimp broth. A restaurant that does not seem aware of the existence of shellfish allergy can be lethal for some people. The lack of warnings or notice of ingredients in menu items seem to suggest that the owners do not even acknowledge shellfish allergy, making it likely that cross contamination might occur even if you order chicken pho for example. On the suggestion of a very close friend of mine, I visited Hanoi old quarter tonight for dinner. The restaurant has a fresh, modern appearance, and the staff was friendly and attentive throughout my visit. I ordered the Bún Chả Hà Nội along with the egg rolls. The Bún Chả Hà Nội was absolutely delicious. The grilled pork was flavorful and perfectly charred, the dipping broth was well balanced, and the fresh herbs and vermicelli brought everything together beautifully. It's a dish I would absolutely order again. Unfortunately, the egg rolls were a different story. They were slightly overcooked, had a noticeable fishy taste, and, more concerning, I found two small hard objects inside that felt like tiny pebbles. After a couple of bites, I decided to send them back. When I explained the issue to my server, I made it clear that the entrée was fantastic, but the egg rolls had missed the mark. He offered to replace them with something else, but said he couldn't remove them from my bill. I politely declined another order of egg rolls and asked if they could simply be taken off the check. Having worked in the hospitality industry for over 30 years, I mentioned that I'd never encountered that type of response before. He then said he would contact the owner. To their credit, they did remove the egg rolls from my bill, which I sincerely appreciated, and I thanked them for making it right. One thing I found a bit unusual was the payment process. Although I received full table service and my order was taken on a handheld electronic device, I was asked to walk to the front counter to pay after my meal. I was also surprised to learn they don't accept credit cards, only cash or Zelle. I paid with Zelle without any issue, but I found it surprising that in 2026 a full-service restaurant doesn't accept credit cards. Overall, this is a place with excellent food potential. The Bún Chả Hà Nội alone is worth trying, and the staff was genuinely friendly. My only suggestion is that ownership empower the staff to resolve reasonable customer concerns on the spot. Small service recoveries can make a lasting positive impression, and with a few adjustments, this restaurant could provide an even better overall dining experience. read more

Hanoi Old Quarter is not your typical Vietnamese restaurant. They specialize in Hanoi style food which I've never had before! The restaurant is located in the same plaza as Mall of Fortune so there's a bunch of parking, although it might be busy. The restaurant is cash only (or Zelle) so just FYI for those who only carry their credit cards. The restaurant is nice and bright and airy. It wasn't busy when I came in around 630pm but the restaurant filled up quickly around 7pm. For the food, I ordered one of my favorite dishes - the crab and shrimp udon called banh canh tom cua cha ca. It was so good and flavorful. My friend ordered the Bun Cha assortment (bun dau mam tom) which comes out in a tray of vermicelli, an assortment of sliced pork, spring rolls and fried tofu as well as lots of fresh veggies and herbs. We also tried the fermented pork appetizer (nem chua ran) which was really unique. All the food was really good. Their chili paste is actually pretty hot so use with caution. My friend added the garlic sauce to his dipping sauce for his DIY vermicelli wrap. Such a yummy place! Service was so quick, the staff were all super friendly. We ended up getting the 13. Canh Bún Chả Cá, 1. Nem Cua Bể, and 21. Xôi Gà. The corn milk was also so good! The Canh Bún Chả Cá was super rich and flavorful. The perfect crab/seafood broth topped with fried tofu, crab paste, and greens. The broth is super light but you'll get full fast! The portion size was good for 2 in my opinion The Xôi Gà was a smaller portion, but since the sticky rice can get a bit heavy l, I thought the portion size was perfect. It such a simple dish but they cooked the chicken perfectly and the sauce it came with made everything feel complete. It was also topped with crispy fried onion which is always a 10/10 The Nem Cua Bể was a perfect crispy. It came with sides of lettuce, nuc mam, bean sprouts, and min leaves. The nuc mam (fish sauce) dip they had was super yum! I like to rolls the egg roll into a lettuce wrap, it gives the perfect balance of flavors and textures The space was clean and it felt very modern. And the noodle soup? Rich, comforting broth, plenty of noodles and greens, with just the right amount of spice and flavor. What I really liked is that the food feels distinctly Northern Vietnamese rather than the same Vietnamese dishes you see everywhere. What a disappointing experience. I've been wanting to try Hanoi Old Quarter for quite some time, and now I wish I hadn't. After a long day at work, I wasn't in the mood to cook and was craving one of my favorite dishes: Bun Cha Ca Thi La. I've had excellent versions at Binh Minh (on the other side of Mall of Fortune Plaza), so I decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, it didn't come close. The broth was overly salty and oddly yellow. The signature tomato-based sourness was completely missing, and there was barely any dill (thi la), which is one of the defining flavors of the dish. To make matters worse, there was only one small, thin piece of cha ca in the entire bowl. At $18 per bowl and cash only, the meal felt like a poor value. If you're craving Bun Cha Ca Thi La, I'd recommend going to Binh Minh instead. This experience honestly reminded me that I could save money and make a much better version at home. My husband picked up the order and mentioned that the floors inside were sticky. It was also surprisingly slow for a Monday evening, with no apparent dinner rush, which in hindsight should have been a sign for us to go elsewhere. Went here with my family on a Sunday evening. Interior is very clean and aesthetic. As other reviews have said, the location is a little hard to find. It's on the backside of the main plaza that your GPS takes you to. Go through the center area where the pho place and oc and lau is and take the inside paths all the way to the other side. It'll be on your left hand side on the outside of the back of the plaza. My dad really enjoyed the pho ga. The banh canh in my opinion could've used more flavor and more meat. The peppers do help amp it up though. The appetizers we got were a nice addition but could use more lettuce! Service was quick and kind. read more

Came here on a weekend for lunch as recommended this restaurant is known for its northern Vietnamese food. Was recommended to try the Canh Bun Cha Ca (Crab noodle soup with fish cake) by a friend. I also ordered the Nem cua be (Crab meat fried spring roles and veggies) as an appetizer. The Nem cua be is very delicious and goes perfectly with the crispy lettuce leaves, mint leave and cilantro (using the lettuce leave as a wrap, add some mint leaves and cilantro, and then dip it into the provided fish spice). The Canh bun cha ca (Crab noodle soup with fish cake) soup was slightly on the light tasting side, but the crab meat balls and the fish cake were very flavorful. Generous portion as well. Pricing wise, similar to local restaurants in the area so definitely great value. Good service. The resturant may be a bit difficult to find it is located in the back of the mall (Mall of Fortune / next to Oc & Lau2). Plenty of parking around the mall area. The resturant can be a little cramped with the tables closely next to each other. However overall, it's a good place to check it out when in the area. Review Food 8/10: we ordered the Nem Cua be, Canh Bun Cha ca, and Cha ca La Vong All 3 dishes were solid and my favorite was the definitely the Nem Cua Be. The Canh Bun Cha ca was also good if you enjoy a light broth but if you want more umami, they have shrimp sauce on the side to add more flavor to your liking. The Cha ca La Ving dish was also on the lighter flavor side but overall still good. I've never had any of these dishes as I don't think they're as popular as like Pho so I'm glad there's a place that offers something different. Service 5/10: honestly the service was really slow. We got seated and it took forever to get our water. I also saw a sign that says free drink if you do a review and when I asked the waiter about it, he said it's no longer valid?! If that's the case, then they should remove the sign. We also asked the server for an extra bowl and I had to remind him twice. It wasn't just our table, I noticed new customers coming in also waited a long time for their water and menu Vibes: interior was OK, but I think it can accommodate a big group but just make sure you call ahead of time. That being said, this restaurant is ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING (not the food, but the cleanliness) We visited because theyre open late and omg the the floor was CLUTTERED with trash, food, idk what else. Not sure why there were people in there still. I really dont want to say its an asian thing. Food was good, we did enjoy but not love (so not great, maybe 3.5 or 4) but overall vibe of the restaurant is questionable. They take zelle or cash only which is also odd. Bathroom was unspeakable. Went to check out Hanoi Old Quarter in Garden Grove and got to try more Northern Vietnamese cuisine. Upon entering the restaurant I noticed a dozen tables and the restaurant look very clean. The staff welcomed us and sat us at our table. This time I ordered the Hanoi grilled pork rice noodles, crab noodle soup with fish cake and grilled fish with turmeric and dill. Hanoi grilled pork rice noodles: This dish came with a bowl of fish sauce broth that had grilled pork patties, slices of pork belly/bacon and some pickled veggies. You eat it with the rice noodles and veggies by mixing it together. The dish was sweet and smokey from the grilled meats. The pork belly/bacon was crispy on the edges as well. Crab noodle soup with fish cake: The soup had rice noodles, morning glory, onions, fish cake, tofu, pig blood and crab meat balls. The soup itself was light, yet flavorful from the spices and sweetness from the crab meat. They give you the thicker rice noodles (round but smaller than udon noodles) which I liked. It had more of a chew compared to the thin rice noodles. Grilled fish with turmeric and dill: This dish came on a pan on top of a butane stove. The fish was already pre grilled and came with fresh dill and onions on top. You let the herbs cook down at table side before enjoying with the rice noodles, peanuts and shrimp sauce that it comes with. The fish that they use is swai which is super meaty. The dill once cooked down is like any other veggie but super aromatic. It was my first time trying the shrimp sauce and it had a strong smell but it tasted good on the fish and noodles. All the dishes here averages out to be about $17 which is pretty affordable nowadays. Everything was fresh and came with a lot of veggies as well. read more
