Last week I pulled up to the take out window, my pizza wasn't quite ready so I pulled ahead. I was early. Happy Joe's is a must have, and none of their other locations do the pizza justice like the ones in Dubuque. I cannot come to Dubuque without stopping in. If you are a crust lover this may not be the place (it is almost non-existent), but the flavor and texture make up for that completely. No where else makes a taco pizza nor a BLT that even comes close. I even really enjoyed spaghetti pizza which was amazing. It is pricey, but it is worth every penny. If I am stopping back in for thanksgiving I always have their pumkin ice cream creation, but that might just be because I am a pumkin fanatic. The atmosphere is classic except I am disappointed that they removed the giant gumball machine. The old photos of workers, the stained glass, and the siren/horn that they use for singing happy birthday gives this pizza parlor it's one-of-a-kind feel. Don't miss out. read more

Here's the deal about Happy Joe's--their pizza is one of the greatest things to grace this planet. However, the service is HORRIBLE. When some friends and I went in, all three of us paid with credit cards and the manager of the place bitched us out because it costs the business money every time a card is swiped. Hello, old man, it's the 21st century and 95% of people use plastic to pay. Also, if you have a business, you need to eat some expenses to make money. Thirdly, it's flat out RUDE to say that sort of thing to PAYING CUSTOMERS. That aside, I would never say no to their pizza, even though I hate every employee to grace their premises. I've been to this Happy Joe's on two occasions and while the first experience was terrific, the second one will likely be my last. My experience began as I was cordially greeted by a server who asked how many people were in our party and let us know which tables we could choose from and identified the baby and asked if we needed a high chair. We said yes and thanked them assuming a highchair would be on it's way, but after standing around for a while, we realized the question was more of a hit that we would need time find one. After locating a highchair we quickly made a decision on two simple pizzas so that I could order well ahead of the rush. In all fairness there were several reserved signs on tables on a Friday night but at the time we were only one of 2 small parties there and as we arrived at 4:30pm, the next reservation was due in at 5pm. I ordered the pizza and drinks to which the cashier said he would bring the drinks over. These drinks I would eventually have to go back and get for myself. The pizza was better than mediocre but not by much. Rightfully so considering the army they had in their kitchen. Another irritation revolved around desert. I went and placed an order for two banana splits with the request that any topping be free of artificial dyes. Seeing as how I had to get the drinks when I was told they would be brought, get the pizza, plates, and silverware already, I figured I would have to get the spoons. As I went to the area where I got the forks and knives, I could not find spoons. I asked the person behind the counter if they had spoons. His response was priceless, "I don't know but they would be there if we had them." What the hell was that? How does an employee not know where common silverware is? I took five forks and went back to my table. Fortunately, there was some good experiences that merit the one star rating I am giving to HJ's. The servers who made and brought the ice cream made doubly sure that what they served my family had no artificial dyes. On 2 occasions they came to our table to let us know what ice cream might have a dye that they would serve in a regular banana split and offered substitutions. They even brought us spoons! Now for the really irritating part. At Happy Joe's, you pay for the pizza before you get them. That is all well and good but it is the 20% tip I gave them for the privilege of serving myself without so much as a thank you. In fact, if the manager is reading this, take the 10 dollar tip I left on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, ticket number 662, and give it to the two who make us ice cream. I didn't catch a name but I know for sure one of them had pieced ears and short dark hair. They are the only reason I would come back and likely just for ice cream. Happy Joe's (the Dubuque restaurant) is one of my favorite places for pizza on this earth! I'm definitely emotionally attached to the place since I have been coming here since I was probably in diapers, but their pizza IS tremendously delicious! It is impossible to match this pizza, this atmosphere and this establishment. Not even fellow Happy Joe's restaurants are the same. My grandfather won't even have Happy Joe's deliver to his house, because they have a separate establishment across town for delivery pizzas only...and to him, the pizzas from the delivery place does not taste the same. I can see why this place has a following. It is fun and kitschy, and seemingly amusing for kids. But, I'm not sure about that Taco Joe Pizza. Was it suppose to be somewhat like a pizza, because it wasn't. It was basically a fried base layer acting like a pizza crust, with all the toppings of a taco. I like mexican, and certainly didn't mind it, but not sure it is on the level of "wow" pizza. It was ok. People were having fun, and some other pies looked good. Wait staff told me to sit wherever upon my arrival, but didn't explain how to order or pick-up food. Left me to figure it out myself, which I did after sitting there unattended for a good 5 minutes. They were more interested in talking about facebook faux pas. If I have to go back to the area for work, I might give Happy Joe's another shot, but will try a more standard style pizza. read more

Was in town for a wedding a had to let my husband experience the goodness of Happy Joes. It was late Saturday night (10:30pm) when we called yo place a to-go order. Wish I could have let my husband have a dine-in experience but time didn't permit. Pizza was hot and fresh when we arrived. Used drive-thru for quick and easy pick-up. Service was okay as I know they were trying to close at 11. We arrived at 10:45. Would take the husband back because he liked the pizza. I grew up in Dubuque and have always seen happy joes as a treat. I have recently moved out of town, but it is a must stop every time. I typically enjoy something simple, however the nacho joe and race pizza are delicious!! My nieces love this place because they can watch the pizzas be made and play games before dinner. Would defiantly recommend this place. I have found Dubuque happy joes seem to be better than other places. And on your birthday you get a free sundae and sung to. read more

I have been going to Happy Joe's for years at a different location. This was my first time at the Dubuque location and I was less than pleased. The service was horrible. We waited forever for our food and when the pizza was ready, the tray was so hot we were barely able to make it back to the table without burning our hands. They did not provide anything to serve the pizza with either. The crust of the pizza was burnt, which was disappointing. After pizza, we ordered ice cream. There was two workers behind the counter and while one was scooping the other just stared at us while fiddling with things on the counter before walking away. Then the other worker behind the counter finished with the customer she was helping, looked at us and announced she was going to clean some tables and walked away. Happy Joe's is some of the worst pizza I have ever had. I just moved from Chicago to Dubuque and I was not expecting Chicago quality pizza in Dubuque. I falsely assumed that the biggest (yet local) pizza chain in Dubuque would be at least a solid choice, how wrong I was. To be fair, I only had the Taco Pizza, their flagship pizza. Happy Joes' taco pizza is disgusting. Never minding the shredded flavorless iceberg lettuce that only makes the whole experience watery. Never mind the Doritos on the pizza, actually that was the "best" thing about this tragedy of a pizza. The crust was gummy and soggy wafer thin in the insides with ridiculously large outer rim. Processed cheese, and mediocre sauce a fraction better then little Caesar's. The worst part was the "meat" on the pizza. Happy Joe claims that it is "taco" seasoned. I was expecting ground beef cooked with chili powder maybe some cumin, that would have been great. No, it was simply Italian sausage resembling rabbit turds. This would not have been good sausage on a regular pizza. On a taco pizza it's just sad. I know why Joe is so happy, he has a cheap bad pizza that he dresses up and charges 20$ for a large pizza that I would not eat if you gave it to me for free. O he also has a "spicy Joe" taco sauce. It is not spicy, nor flavorful, simply watered down ketchup a pinch of chili powder and extra sugar that you can buy and take home. If you want good pizza in dubuque go to Mario's, Cafe Mana Jaza, or practically any where else. The sad thing though about Happy Joe is that it's a pizza racket. I live in Texas, and we don't have Happy Joe's here. I wish we did! My husband used to work here in high school and has raved about it for years. I was worried that when I tried the taco pizza, it would not live up to his hype. I was WRONG! The taco pizza is amazing!! Now that I have to eat gluten free due to Celiac, it can be a bit of a challenge. Their GF taco pizza is SO yummy! I tried GF pepperoni and pineapple pizza and I am definitely a fan! Gluten free pizza at Happy Joe's is reasonably priced (It was $13.00 for a taco pizza). If you want ice cream, they will let you read the ingredients off of the tubs of ice cream so you can decide for yourself if it is safe or not. I had the Silly Willy ice cream (leave off the wafer!) and it was good. I did not feel all that well afterward though, so I did not get ice cream the next time. Boy has this place gone down hill...I too used to love this place but the last couple times I have gone there it was insanely expensive - I'd say twice what you'll pay for a pizza anywhere else in Dubuque - and they have definetly changed the crust...now it is too thick and too doughy and it tastes like cardboard.
