It's this friendly personal touch that makes this such a great shop. Example: one time I went in there to get some beer, and grabbed a box off the stack in the beer fridge. When I took it up to the counter the guy looked at it and said 'No! You don't want that one. I just put them in there, they'll be warm.' He jumped up and went to the beer fridge, and proceeded to move around all the stacked beer boxes he'd just put in there, so he could get me a cold one from the bottom. That's why this is such a great shop.

Colloquially known as the bank (as this is what the building originally was) it has served the area for years. The staff are the same as they were pre-franchise, and they continue their friendly, comforting service. There are only a few businesses where I'd consider myself a regular, and this is one of them. Not just because of my boozy habits, but because of the smile of recognition and warm greeting I get when I go in. Their prices are fairly standard for a suburban bottle shop, but they often have wine or beer specials that mean you can get something pretty drinkable without financial ruin. And if you go in at the right time of day they'll have Home and Away on, so you can watch it while you wait in line.

I'm a really indecisive person, and these gentlemen have helped me choose what to drink many a time, and I have never been disappointed. My most recent discovery was the Cranberry Lime Old Mout Cider. Kiwi Liquor has the entire Old Mout range available, and for a great price. Only nine dollars a bottle! Good discounts are always on offer at Kiwi Liquor. I have never been there and not managed to get a good deal on whatever alcohol I purchase. Though Kiwi Liquor is a relatively small liquor store but manages to stock a wide range of beverages. Beer, wine, spirits, and cider - every drink you could want can be found in this store, including the great little hand-painted tequila skulls that are currently popular. If you're in Ponsonby and in need of alcohol, don't bother paying big bucks at the Super Liquor a few stores down, head in to Kiwi Liquor instead for a bargain and a friendly enjoyable experience!

This little bottle shop on Ponsonby Road reminds me of one of those stores you'd see in American…read moremovies set in rural Alabama or somewhere. You know, like there should be old men in rocking chairs outside swigging tinnies of beer and asking what "ciddie folk're doin' rown these pards." I think perhaps it's the extensive deck outside, or the weird smell that lingered about the place...or possibly it's just my over active imagination. Either way, the shop looks a bit out of place, tucked away just off the road on the cool end of Ponsonby in amongst the trendy restaurants and hipster stores. They've got a good selection of alcohol in here, including cans of Rekorderlig in every flavour--something I've not seen anywhere else and a welcome change to the bulky glass bottles and the majority of the stuff is already refrigerated, so good if you want to start drinking it right away. It's reasonably priced and the staff are friendly. Just try to ignore the smell.

They've got a great selection of beers, wine, cider and spirits including an obligatory cold room. It's pretty good value for the drinks too, more expensive than the Countdown up the road but with none of the hassle of parking and queuing to buy. The best part is that you can park right outside the door, so it's a real quick hop in and hop out and they're always open pretty late. Tip: They're mad strict on ID (as I found out when I took in my UK driving license as proof of age!) so make sure you've got a Kiwi license or passport with you.

When I approached the counter to pay (with my bottle of Haha), I was asked if I would like to sample a French red for $19 a bottle. I accepted and was requested to stand behind the counter to taste, due to liquor licence laws. We had a great chat about the French wines and I was nearly inspired to buy that bottle too! I was highly impressed with the price and brands of the wine being sold, sometimes even less expensive than the supermarket! Wine Direct also have a store in Parnell.
