I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process.

The fees are very fair and many rescues charge a lot more for an adoption of a healthy spayed/neutered dog who has been in foster care in most cases. I have adopted through some local rescues and I have been very disappointed in their lack of interest in the health of their dogs. Since I know Second City Canine Rescue actually cares about their placements, I will absolutely adopt through them again.

Her nutritional and medical advice is superb. She did not suggest any unnecessary tests, she asks the right questions, she makes some good nutritional recommendations. I appreciated the handout she gave me for approved raw and grain-free food. I have referenced this handout several times when seeking out different options for food. I find her very compassionate about animals and holistic treatments. She is compassionate about what is put in pet food, I got quite an education about what is in some commercial products. I've found their front desk reception staff to be pleasant and helpful every visit, and also when I call. I have called to make appointments and to order a supplement, which they shipped to me (I appreciated not having to drive an hour there and back to get it). Yes, when you book a first time appointment it takes a couple months to get in with Dr. Grant. She is very popular. When I needed a more urgent visit I was able to book an emergency visit for approximately $100. As long as the staff disclosed this amount and why, I was fine with it. I saw they have boarding, the cats that were in the cat boarding looked pretty happy and it appeared to be clean and tidy in the boarding room.

She calmed us with every step that was taken and never rushed the process, even after our dear dog was gone . While the application, interview process, and the meet and greet was fairly easy and lax... and we…read moreare absolutely in love with the pup we adopted... we are disappointed that the health status wasn't fully vetted (like other rescues). We we told our pup was healthy from the rescue/Vet, we still took the pup to our regular Vet after bringing him home. It turns out, he still had fleas AND had a bad ear infection (and no medication was administered for it). Neither of which were addressed during the rescue's in-take and during his care/time at the farm. After another week... and we found live worms in our pup's stools and immediately had to buy more medicine for tapeworms. I read previous reviews saying similar experiences (but given they were anywhere from 1-2 yrs ago I thought this might have been addressed with the time that had passed), but no as of Nov 2024 these are still very valid conditions to be aware of. The animals need to be further tested and treated during the adoption process (and really should be done during a quarantine period to avoid it being a constant cycle at the Farm). To add to the issue, we have other pets at home, so, unbeknownst, introducing fleas and worms to the rest of our gang, plus remediation, was very frustrating. We've also asked for the formal rabies certificate, as well as the tag... and feel like the request goes ignored. They only hand wrote in a Rabies # on the adoption paperwork which doesn't seem very valid. I'm sad I have to write a "bad" review, because we'd like to believe the rescue's intetions are in the right place. But I hope FKAR considers these similar comments/complaints going forward to truly ensure they are adopting out healthy animals.

Kristen responds to questions and requests promptly and professionally. Unlike with our previous sitter, the dogs seem extremely happy and stress free when we get home. Kristen, Tracy and Lois made a great impression from the initial interview and continue to impress us with their care and concern for our dogs. It is truly a relief to know our dogs are being taken care with love and attention while we are gone.

From the first meeting, where Kristen came to meet the dogs, I knew I had found someone who would care about my dogs as much as I do. One of my dogs really does like anyone but me. Kristen took her time, and I think spent extra time to get to know her. I received daily emails with pictures of how they were doing, which no Puppy Prison has ever done for me. When I got home, I saw how well they were, and looked happy and healthy as when I left them. When Kristen came to drop off my keys, my kids were excited to see her, so I knew right then, when I need a pet sitter, or pet walker, I know you to call, and you should too.
