My wife and I found the MacKenzie House B&B while looking for a place to spend one night in Port Hawksbury. We were pleased with our spacious and clean room. Seriously the King sized bed looked little in that room. Beautiful decor, large immaculately clean ensuite bathroom, lots of big windows overlooking the property and giving plenty of light, gorgeous common rooms and a huge back deck were wonderful features found here. We didn't have dinner, but the dinning room is a restaurant open to the public and featured an elegant menu. Right adjacent there is a little bar area where you can purchase an evening drink to help you unwind. Breakfast was served in the dinning area at individual tables (seating a max of 4). We helped ourselves to some yogurt, fruit, juice and cereals at the side board and were then served a hot breakfast of eggs, bacon & toast. Everyone on staff was friendly and accomodating, what a lovely stay we had.

Our hosts were quiet but friendly, not a chatty bunch like some B&Bs where we have stayed. Down by the water is a great strandkorb, imported from Germany, where you and your partner can sit with a beer or glass of wine and look at the water to relaaaax. There is no swimming in the water (too rocky), but it's still lovely to explore and take photos, watch the wildlife, and breath the fresh air. The only downside to the stay was that you had to pay an extra charge for breakfast. Granted, the breakfast was delightful, but it pushed our stay into a slightly more expensive zone than we had wanted.

It is well set back and elevated from the main road, which in any case is never busy. There is ample free parking and it is entirely smoke-free. If you like rugged coastlines and fishing villages, this is the place for you (although there is beach nearby). Many rooms/units have a view of the bay. The proprietor grew up in the community, moved away, and returned, and is well-connected with the community. She lives in the Inn and is only a phone call away. She knows all the special places to explore. When we visited, breakfast was a satisfying continental buffet, with cereal, fruit, pastries, boiled eggs, yoghurt, toast, etc. There is no other regular meal service, but everyone recommends the Groundswell pub in nearby D'Escouse, a relaxing 10-minute drive away (at night, drive slowly and watch out for deer!). Although the building is old, the inn rooms are fresh and comfortable with all the conveniences. Each room has independent heat (no A/C but you would rarely need it--the screened windows open easily for fresh ocean breezes). You could not find a better place to stay in Isle Madame. If you are looking for a spot to host a family reunion or hold a small conference in a rural setting, this is the place!

The room is typical for an inexpensive motel, and we really didn't have any issues. We did pass through the restaurant but chose not to eat there, as it looked like some pretty generic food that was not appealing to us. Instead we went down to the local supermarket and picked up a roasted chicken to eat, which was perfect for us. We did have an issue with our door, where the battery basically died on the electronic lock. They had a serviceman out there immediately to replace the battery, where we then got to hear stories about how the door locks had been installed by Pat Benetar's father (he apparently owns an electronic door lock company). There is no continental breakfast offering, so you will be on your own for food in the morning. There may be food at the restaurant in the morning, but I did not check. Room amenities: - Cable/Satellite television - Mini-fridge - Free Wi-Fi

For dinner I had mussels and a steak - both were excellent. Meals are served in the main house (the main house a good place to hang out and read and surf the internet after eating) and then most of the bedrooms are located in a separate building about a 30 second walk away. Lots of great views from this B&B and easy access to the surrounding area - beach walks, walks in the woods, walks to the lakes, and I suspect a good base if going to the Stan Rogers' summer concert. The hosts David and Ann Marie are very welcoming and they went out of their way to make our stay great. We got lucky - the night we arrived David and Ann Marie were hosting a 'living room' concert and after dinner we sat and listened to musicians who had traveled from Regina, Saskatchewan. Lots of fun. This apparently happens from time to time so when you book see if there is a concert during your stay. If not, still come. Very highly recommended.

The view is AMAZING and the location is just about perfect. The cottages are housekeeping, and the kitchens have pretty much everything you'll need. There is a barbecue on the spacious deck in front of every cottage. There were flyers for a fish and chips place down the road when we visited, but we were happy to cook for ourselves. The two bedrooms are very cozy, with wood panelling throughout and ceiling fans to keep you cool. The hot water is plentiful. You can have fresh towels on demand. There is a TV in each cottage if the weather fails to cooperate, and the office loans out movies (including a decent selection of kids titles) and has a small lending library. The stairway down to the water was off limits last summer when we visited, but no matter. A quick drive down the highway leads you to a dirt road that leads to the sweetest little sheltered beach. The water was warm and the sand warmer. The shallows continue for a good long way out, so it's a great beach to visit with kids. Speaking of kids, there's a nice playset out in the middle of the grounds and lots of room to run round. If you're affected by sand flies, you may want to be careful, but only the allergic member of our party had troubles on our visit.
