This Review Will Cover My experience of last Year Return and my most Recent Tax Return. Last Year I was a 1099 Tax return, give it a 6/10 was there 30min but charged for an hour, John was not thorough. Assumed it was me not asking the right questions and gave them a second chance this year. I was a 1099 Independent Contractor with a Small business LLC that has been open for 3 months. Day of the appointment, again, there for 30 min, John said I would owe 11K in taxes and recommend an LLC to not have to pay those taxes, I was confused because I indeed already had an LLC , and clearly someone missed all my paperwork I input on their organizer. John took a look at my LLC and said "Nevermind, I'm gonna have to redo all this" I left Extremely confused. I called twice and all they could say was " We will let you know if we need anything from you" WHAT!?! WEEKS LATER I get an email stating taxes are done. I was charged 600 for personal, again, charged for an hour that I was not there for, then, 1,300 for business taxes, AND 800 for someone to go through my quickbooks. I had requested 1 HOUR of Quickbooks Organizing. No acknowledgment to the mess up and almost putting me 11K in Debt! No Communication to what is going on. My FIRST time filing for my 3 Month old Business and The Worst Experience I could've had. I Paid My Bill, and I Won't Fight over 3K because I have other this to worry about, but definitely want to help anyone out there looking to file your taxes. I normally do my own taxes because they're relatively simple, but last year I sold a house in another state, moved to Texas, and bought a house here. Texas is new to me in certain tax ways (no state income tax, claiming sales tax, etc.). In 2017, I had way too many things going on tax-wise to be comfortable doing them myself. I emailed John Harman's office during the holidays and received a timely response. I organize my tax stuff throughout the year, and I get going on it in January because I don't like to wait until the last minute (yes, I'm a nerd). Brad met with me in January, and patiently sat through my litany of questions, poor guy! I'm also starting my own business on the side, and had lots of questions about that too. He is quite knowledgable and answered them all thoroughly; I felt much better when I left. My taxes were complete a short time later. In fact, they had to wait until the Fed opened the "door" to file mine. I came into the office, reviewed and signed my forms, and received my refunds like usual. I got a consultation from John and it was pretty disappointing. I've sent all my returns and supporting docs in advance but during the call it was obvious that he didn't even take a look at it. He superficially asked me some questions and tried to respond to some of mine. After 5 minutes of conversation I was stopped by him saying that after this point he will have to charge me X dollars per hour. And it was totally fine, I needed a consultation and I was ready to pay for it which I stated right from my first contact with him. During the rest of the call he didn't provide any useful information, just some general stuff. He promised to get back to me after he reviews everything and calculates taxes based on my input. Guess what? He never replied to me since then. My follow-ups were ignored, and he didn't even send an invoice. Probably, I didn't interest him with my case. But I would expect to get some feedback instead of just silence. read more

We moved from California and the guy who did our taxes from there messed up. So, we needed an amendment. Also, we needed someone who understands ministers taxes. I made an assumption that most CPAs (especially in the Bible belt) are familiar with ministers taxes - that was a bad assumption and you know what they say about assumptions, they make an.......... I chose this place because it's the closest to where we currently live. I should have done more research. Anyway, firstly, when I got to this CPA office I noticed a sign on the door that says to wear a mask. But then I saw that the receptionist was not wearing a mask. So, when I was called back, I decided to ask out of courtesy if John would like me to wear a mask (because I don't prefer to wear them). He quickly replied no (I didn't need to) but then stopped himself and asked my health history, if you know what I mean. I said to him that I don't share that. So then he said that yes, he would like me to wear a mask. So I did. This encounter was the first thing that threw me off. Next, I thought that he was going to sit there with me and do my amendment then and there (like had always been done in the past in California, and not just at H&R Block - at actual CPA offices). Another bad assumption on my part. He was only going to scan everything and have his team work on it later. Initially stating it would take a few weeks to get it done, when I was shocked about that, he said they could rush it and have it done in about a week or so, so that was nice of him to offer to rush it for me. He wasn't familiar with ministers/clergy taxes (said maybe has done 1 or 2). He didn't know the answer when I asked a question relating to housing and our income level - said to google it. Assumption number, who's counting, I assumed his costs were on par with - or less than - what I experienced before in California, and also with the area we live in - neither were true by a landslide (also, I later found out that he's more expensive than other places in this area I called asking for the same service). The motto at this CPA is, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. I'm giving three stars because he reduced the (high) rate of the consultation - charging me for 30 minutes rather than the almost-full hour that somehow got eaten up, and I ended up getting the amendment done soon after, somewhere else not far away, on the spot, by someone familiar with clergy taxes, and more affordably (about half-cost). I hope in the future the receptionist gives/gets more details when someone makes an appointment - perhaps saying that this CPA is not familiar with Clergy taxes (because I did mention that to her when making the appointment), and makes sure people know their taxes won't get done on the spot, and even gives rates up front (unless it's a - if you have to ask you can't afford it place, which very well may be the case). Basically, this CPA office may be a great fit for most people in the area. But it wasn't for me. read more

I have met with JH personally on more than one occasion and he was enthusiastic about selling me extras like insurance but not helpful about deduction guidance at all. Used John Harman for the first time filing 2014 taxes. It did not go well from the start but we waited until the last minute to find a new CPA. The big issue started when they filed the wrong return. When they filed our taxes there was a $500 discrepancy between what we paid and what they filed. I noticed it and brought it to their attention. I found John Harman, CPA on Google and found that they have very positive reviews, so I called and made an appointment with them. My wife and I visited with Brad on a Saturday midday and were very pleased with how professional he was and handled out tax situation (being first time home buyers and recently married) As of Tuesday (3 days later) he notified us with his summary for our taxes and we were pleased with the results and how fast the taxes were handled. I have a fairly simple tax situation - the only complication is a rental I own in Colorado. I met with Brad and he seemed really knowledgeable. They did my taxes fairly quickly, but when they sent me the initial draft of the returns, I noticed something that didn't look right with my CO state taxes. I sent Brad an email. Didn't hear a thing from him. Two days later, I sent an email to Wendy, who is the one who sent me the returns. I told her I had emailed Brad two days earlier but never heard back and explained that it didn't look like all my deductions were applied. She sent a very brief email back basically saying I was wrong. So I called her. She was really short with me over the phone but as I continued talking she all the sudden became much friendlier and then said she would review my taxes again and let me know. Sure enough, a few hours later she emailed me a new return that showed I owed half of what they originally had said I owed Colorado. No apologies or explanations. There are three things that really bothered me: 1. I am not an accountant and I saw the error, 2. Wendy was so rude to me when I was trying to explain the error, and 3. I never heard a peep out of Brad - EVER. I don't know who truly did my taxes but I suspect they thought I was an easy case and handed me off to someone less experienced. If you use them, I would ask for a guarantee that the person you initially meet with (the one with the fancy office) is the person who will be doing your taxes and will actually respond to your questions and concerns. On second thought, I would recommend you don't use them at all. In response to the owner's response: I am not sure what you are looking at when you say I received 'prompt' replies to my inquiries. I emailed Brad on Sunday, March 5 at 12:49 pm. I received no response. I then forwarded the email I had sent Brad to Wendy on Tuesday, March 7 at 8:23 pm stating that I had not heard back from him. She responded at that point. I would not call two emails and two days 'prompt'. I don't understand how me not communicating with you for 4 months is relevant. You provided poor service and I don't have any interest in dealing with your company anymore. But I do think people need to know what they may experience if they hire you. read more

I recently consulted with John about my taxes. The initial consultation was great. He was easy to talk to, and I decided to give him a shot, since the CPA that I was working with is from out of town. I wanted someone local. Here's my story: I consulted with him because I wanted to know how much it's going to cost to do my taxes. I thought, that his price was reasonable (more than what I pay my other CPA), like I mentioned I decided to move forward with my tax preparation. John had asked me to fill out an organizer which is 10 pages worth of information. At a glance, it did not seem so bad, so when I got home I started working on the "organizer". As I go through his "organizer", I quickly realized that this is a legal document that I'm filling out in which I can be liable for if I put the wrong information. As a result, I had some questions and concerns, so I communicated these questions/concerns through email. It took me few weekends (of a total of 7 days) filing out this "organizer". After 6 email communication, I received somewhat of a nasty email, and John was complaining that I was sending too many questions, and according to his words (paste/copy from his email)," if you do not understand the question on the organizer, it probably doesn't apply." But that is the catch, and here's what I'm thinking. Let's just say (as an example), that I move forward with his service, and I did not correctly fill out this "organizer" just because I did not pursue to understand each question, and as a result, caused his preparation to be inaccurate. If, for instance, I get audited and found to be at fault, I would be responsible for all of this instances because in the eyes of legal court, I furnished his firm false information. Folks, this is liability I don't think anyone wants. His firm can easily walk away from this situation. Why? Because now, he has a written document I furnished for his firm, and he can wash his hands clean of this instance. On top of all of that, He was charging me an extra hour (which equates to $240 hourly rate) for all of the 6 emails that I sent wanting detailed explanation of his "organizer". 1 hour? Most of his response is literally a one sentence response. In my head, I'm thinking, he either types slow or read slow or both. How did your arrive to 1 hour. Anyways, I just want everyone to know my experience, it just didn't work out. Don't fill out the organizer, allow his firm to work out all the "totals". Besides, isn't that what accounting firms do? Work out the totals. The "organizer" (after grinding it out) seems to me the actual leg work that they suppose to do in the first place. read more
