This place is a hidden gem! And I actually do mean hidden because the store front can't be seen from the street. So best is to park next to the Walker Bros pancake house and walk into the middle of the plaza and you will see the sign. As for the coffee and interior, it's priced moderately and taste amazing! A great alternative from your usual Starbucks. They also have a greater selection of hot espresso/coffee, cold brew, and tea. There's a good amount of tables for singles/pairs and a few larger table for groups and access to an outlet at every table. A really nice visit to Coffee Speaks this morning, on a rare morning in the suburbs. Looking at options for coffee in the area, there seemed to be plenty of great options, but after reading a few reviews I was set on Coffee Speaks. It certainly did! Another reviewer called this a hidden gem, and while it seems to be well known in the area, it is hard to find. I took two trips around the block before I saw it in the interior of the terrace area. Lots of great options, including freshly baked goods and sandwiches (I did not get to try). The coffee stacks up with some of my favorite places in the city, flavorful with the right balance. The oat milk really added a nice touch on this cold brew. I'm only going 4/5 based on price: $10 for two 16oz coffees and a banana is a little high. That said, the quality is there. read more

Loved this place!! If you're looking for a quiet, tucked away coffee spot, this is it. In fact, I'm afraid of reviewing it because I don't want anyone to know about it and spoil the quiet atmosphere. But I also don't want them to go away. I'm so torn . Best latte I've ever had. Lavender latte. I'm spoiled for life. And they made a pretty heart in my cup. Starbucks doesn't do that for me. Had one of their scones too and it was delicious and just the right size. Office away from the office...a cute stop tucked away in the back of Port Clinton. Just a quick update to report that this place is still the perfect spot for a business meeting or a quiet place to work. I held a meeting here the other day. My meeting was set for noon, so I specifically picked this stop over another coffee shop knowing they don't serve lunch. I wasn't sure if it would get busy, and it was actually ideal! Though coffee speaks is small, there are plenty of tables (close together). The ambiance is calm and quiet, and pretty private in feeling. I had a very large, fresh pumpkin muffin, and a vanilla latte (consistently reliable). Though I wouldn't call this place a scene, I did see Mayor Rotering there. *One star deduction for not having a bathroom directly in the coffee shop. You have to get a key and go outside to another building. read more

My favorite. Tucked away in the Port Clinton square in Highland Park is my favorite coffee shop. They roast their beans, which we buy regularly. The Columbia bean is our favorite to use as an espresso for our morning latte and Americano. In the store, I treat myself occasionally to a Chai - mmmm. The place itself is immaculate and welcoming, simply decorated, music in the background, friendly staff. They care about you as a customer and warmly greet you. They care about the community and provided treats to healthcare workers during our continued pandemic. They delivered (and still do) beans locally for free (though I suggest helping them out with a tip). Saw their scooped scones on my IG feed and was intrigued. I never really venture out to Highland Park, but it was interesting enough to check out. The shop is situated right in the heart of downtown, but it's tricky to find. It's tucked in the center of Port Clinton Square, this commercial area right by the Metra. If you're coming from 2nd street, look for the New Balance store and walk past it and further into the square. If you're coming from 1st street, it's just a straight shot. They had 7 different flavors of scooped scones at the time of our visit, and I learned that they're made in-house daily. We settled with the matcha chocolate chip and the chocolate cocoa. Thought it was a nice portion - would go perfectly with your coffee or if you just need a pick-me-up. Good texture, not dry and not overly sweet. Was tempted to get one of each flavor! My nipresso was served in a martini glass which I thought was pretty neat. Smooth and very bold. They have a variety of blends that you can enjoy in-store or at home. read more

Cute little hidden coffee spot in a building structure located by Walker Bros. I had the white chocolate vanilla latte which was very good. They have a great drink menu variety, even one that has dalgona coffee which I'll definitely gave to try next time. They do not have a restroom inside for customers but there is one outside. I also came right before closing so did not see many food options. I'll be stopping by here again next time I'm in the area. read more

A cute place with cute drinks! Tried their lavender latte, but I didn't taste any lavender. The latte art was adorable! My friend tried some kind of ice coffee that was in a fancy glass, which I thought was super fun. We tried the cookie scones which were lovely. I'm a regular here. This place is tucked away in the Port Clinton square next to a florist and stationary store. The ambience is very nice and the staff is kind. I come in here to get work done occasionally and the WiFi is always on and strong. There are plenty of seats and a variety of work stations. The coffee is delicious and strong. I especially like to ask the staff for tea recommendations. They have drink specials and will do take out orders. They use high quality ingredients and have your choice of almond, soy, milk and creams. The coffee shop is open early and is later than some of the other local shops outside of Starbucks. They are not open on Sundays and have seasonal hours. I think this is a great addition to the community. read more

One of the best coffee shops in the Chicagoland area hands down! I live in the city where there are numerous coffee shops. However, this place rivals some of the best cafes in Chicago. The owners' knowledge on coffee is vast and they offer drinks that you can only find at specialty cafes. The service is always fast and friendly and they always make it a point to get to know their customers. The list of drinks and ways to get your coffee are numerous. They have pour over, chemex, cold brew, nitro, french press, lattes, tea and the list goes on and on. The nitro brew on tap is amazingly smooth. Seriously, where else can you get nitro on tap in the area?! I never new what a shakerato was until they so kindly explained it to me and it's delicious. Get it. Coffee is delicious & baristas are friendly & very eager to accommodate any variations. Nitro iced coffee is the bomb. Have not tried their food selection but they do have a few bakery items & packaged snacks. Several tables for sitting or working. Two nitpicky things - the restroom is not inside the coffee shop - if you have your laptop set up it means you need to get up and pack up or leave your items unattended. They are also closed on Sundays. Not the end of the world but warrants knocking a star off. All in all a great alternative to Starbucks read more

I have to give this coffee shop a 2-star review due to the quality of our drinks. My sister got the lavender latte and it tasted like neither lavender nor latte. I ordered a London fog and all I tasted was watery milk with the slightest hint of earl grey. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this coffee shop to the coffee lovers out there. Not sure what everyone is raving about. The owners were very nice but the lattes my sister and I had were barely mediocre. It's a really cute place near the train station in Highland Park. I got a white chocolate vanilla latte with soy. The espresso was kind of burnt and the latte was rather runny instead of steamed properly. There were a lot of people hanging out in this coffee spot on a Saturday afternoon. The bathroom is not inside the store. It's a bathroom that's shared with the other shops in the area.
