In fact, they pretty much let the kids take the lead on what and how they want to learn. This approach won my kids over vs. traditional lessons, and they built up a great relationship with their instructer, Alan. Last summer they took a break from the traditional lessons and worked on a summer project to learn and record a song - one playing guitar and the other piano. Experiencing the end to end process was so exciting for them, and Alan did an amazing job producing the recording. We have since moved from Chicago, but were back in the neighborhood this summer. I asked if there were any activities or camps they wanted to do, and they wanted to work on another project with Alan. So over just 5 lessons, they each learned and recorded a song. After being gone for a year, this has reignited a love for making music in both of my children. Alan and Gwen's passion and talent are contagious. I highly recommend them to anyone (adult or child!)

My high school senior has also agreed to join the group this fall, after hearing So much about Scott and the program. Plus seeing his band, Sixteen Candles, is a big draw for the teens too! Finally, we had three of our kids in the UpBeat Music Camp this summer, with some of our neighborhood friends. The combination of music and outside games over lunch made for a great day! The concert mid-week was incredible--especially for kids who had never played or had picked up a new instrument for the fist time. And on the final day of camp, at an evening BBQ, all our kids/neighborhood kids put on their own concert for the adults--complete with bass guitar, guitar and piano--playing very cool music. Keep in mind that these kids range in ages 11-16 and they did this on their own--we heard them from outside and came in to watch. Very cool!! It is the highlight of my workday when I get that video! Watching the joy and pleasure he gets from clapping, stomping and following her cues warms my heart. When he first started at daycare he was a bit shy and reserved and would often just stare at Helen not really participating. But now he's blossomed into a dancing & singing machine. Helen's warm, engaging and supporting spirit have helped him build his confidence and allowed personality his personality to shine! Seeing his development in the last 2-3 months has been amazing and fun. And I attribute a lot of that development to music class with Ms Helen. Now if only she could teach Mommy and Daddy some rhythm so we could keep up with him!

During the lesson he has you wait in his livingroom. It is very comfortable with a TV, Netflix cable and wireless internet available. Parking has never been an issue, both pay and free parking is available. Twice a year he has group performances where all of his students have a chance to perform one song in front of all the other students and their families. This is optional and a great experience. Erica has a degree in Vocal Performance AND Music Education, and it's very clear she is an expert in both content (voice) and process (learning pedagogy). She is incredibly intentional in her selection and pacing of vocal exercises, concepts, and techniques to ensure they meet me where I'm at as a singer and learner. She encourages open dialogue about the learning process and we make adjustments to meet my learning needs and style along the way. I have confidence that she could teach anyone at any level.
