COVID-19 Review 10/2020 This is already my favorite local bar in my neighborhood, but time to review it COVID style! I went with 2 of my guys friends and were prompted to sit inside since all of the outside "curb" seatings were filled. No biggie, I love sitting in the loft anyways, it's where I always sat! The drinks menu was on a QR code so no need to touch anything! The bartending folks came up to us a good number of times to order our drinks (we ordered 3 drinks each.... 6 drinks total) and they came at a timely manner. The prices of the drinks are pretty average and they definitely aren't watered down! Very delicious! They also had some food that we could order from Co Nam next door, but we opted out from ordering it. Maybe next time, haha. Everyone wore masks and there were hand sanitizer available. The place was empty when I stopped by at 6:00 p.m. My group of four settled on sitting at the corner table in the front area right next to the bar. The cocktails here are affordable compared to the rest of San Francisco, at around $13 each. In the hour that I was hanging out here, I ended up ordering two Dylan & Bianca's -- bourbon, all-spice, white vermouth, amaro, and bitters. The cocktail drank like an Old Fashioned, albeit on the sweet side. Because of how empty the bar was, I had no issues placing my cocktail orders, nor closing out my tab at the end of my visit. I walked in on a double date and the place smelled weird, like some odd cleaning detergent. We walked in and the bartender may or may not have greeted us. We looked through the menu and I did not want anything from it, so I asked for two Long Islands to which the the bartender seemed stumped and pretentiously said "we don't do that here or AMFs, etc". He seemed to ignore us the entire time, then called my friend cheap after we tipped at least 10-15 percent after every drink we ordered sine we closed out after every drink. Total we ordered for our group at least 8 drinks. We felt attacked and honestly were not given good or even mediocre service the entire night. We waited long amounts of time for simple drinks and even when there were few people at the bar, his eye gaze skipped over us, we honestly had jo idea why. Advice for the bar tender or manager. Train employees to provide a certain level of service to everyone who attends your bar and not insult the people you are serving. If I have ever seen a bartender that was good at gaslighting, it was yesterday at Harper and Rye! Not only was he extremely unhelpful on drink selection, but he also stopped serving us and gaslit one of my colleagues by telling him that he was in the wrong for asking for another drink after the bartender "decided" to close down the bar. By the way, the bartender closed down the bar before midnight when Google says Harper & Rye is open until 2 am This bartender was so manipulative because he also said that he would give my colleague a drink on the house because of all the commotion he caused, but later we found out that it was a drink that had already been paid for by a different party. I will be honest - Harper and Rye was one of the most iconic bars in Nob Hill that I often frequented when I first moved to SF, but now it a below average bar in SF. A plus is they also have a pool table on the first level that you can rent to play. While you're at the bar, take the opportunity to glance at their selection as the design is sleek or the check out the sheet on the side of the bar for their special cocktails. On average will run you $12+ per cocktail. Come early to avoid the rush and grab tables if you're coming in a group, but you can get lucky with bar seating. EDITED*** - I stood at the bar for what felt like a very long time, trying my best to make eye contact with the bartenders and get their attention so I could order a drink, but to no avail. - All the while I continuously watched them serve all the white people behind and next to me that came after me, until another white person called them out on their actions before they finally took my order, and this is after I called them out myself. - I felt very hurt by this actions, adding to the fact that coincidentally all the people that were prioritized were white and I was black. - It made me really sad and I felt horrified to be treated this way and have to watch other white people pity me enough to be the person to use their privilege/power to finally get the bartender's attention and request them to finally take my order. UPDATE** - I expressed my concern to their instagram account in hopes of getting an explanation and an apology for what happened that night. - The owner kindly took time out of his day to meet me in person and listen to my version of what happened that night as well as explain the events from his staff's point of view and provide clarity to why I was treated that way. - Per the owner's explanation, "They were heavily understaffed and the bartender took a glance at me a couple times and did not have the impression I was ready to order so he went ahead and served other people." - He outlined the fact he was going to have a meeting with his staff to avoid such instances from repeating in the future. I may come back to Harper & Rye but I definitely would not recommend it. The environment is buzzy without feeling unsafe, and the music and lights create a really nice vibe. The wait was around 45 minutes which didn't feel worth it for our experience. The staff was all really friendly but they weren't very attentive; we ordered another drink which didn't come, even after waiting 15 minutes and reminding our server that we ordered another drink. The food (which comes from the next door restaurant Co Nam) was really disappointing. We ordered a roti paratha and the spring rolls and while the roti paratha it's self was good, the dipping sauce had literally no flavor and it was extremely watery, I'm assuming it was watered down. My low rating is due to something really sleazy they did with the bill. Within the itemized costs they added an auto tip of 18% even though we were just a party of 3 and they never told us this or made it clear they automatically added full tip. But then on the bottom they have a huge box to check 18 20 22% for the tip. So unless you are scanning the bill really closely, you will double tip, one of which is on top of an already inflated bill from tip #1. This left a really bad taste in mouth and they surely must know what they're doing. Enough to not return here with so many great options on Polk. Besides this, experience was fine. I prefer lax bars and this one was packed with a younger crowd. Being in my mid 30s, I felt too old for this place. But we didn't have a problem grabbing a table. They have these long 6 tops along the wall and we shared it with a couple before they left. I guess Harper & Rye might have been fun in my twenties, but in my thirties, I'd prefer a chiller bar.
