History

Established in 1988.

In 1988, Lorne Crerar and another young partner in a Glasgow court firm took a couple of support staff and converted its business division, which had recently started, into a separate commercial practice. The new start was Harpers, which subsequently took over a niche corporate firm called Macleods, to become Harper Macleod. In 2002, Martin Darroch joined the firm as Finance Director and was appointed Chief Executive in 2006 - Harper Macleod was the first firm in Scotland to appoint a non-lawyer chief executive - with the now Professor Crerar as Chairman. Over the years the firm went from strength to strength, expanding its footprint all over Scotland. In 2014, the firm took over niche private client practice, Bird Semple, to significantly extend its offering in personal legal services. Meet the Business Owner: Lorne C.

Professor Lorne Crerar is one of the two founding partners of the firm and is the firm's Chairman. Lorne is the firm's Senior Partner in the Banking & Finance and Sports Sector Groups and is an active member of the Public Sector Group. He is responsible for the creation and implementation of the firm's ongoing strategic policy. Lorne has wide experience of the operations of the public sector and has been appointed by The Scottish Government to undertake a number of independent reviews. He was the only representative from a commercial law firm on the panel which supported the Independent Review of Legal Services in Scotland, chaired by Esther Roberton, which in October 2018 delivered a report recommending a new system of regulation for the Scottish legal profession.
