What a cute little diner! The small space is immediately warm and cozy. You feel like you're at grandma's house! The staff is friendly and immediately ready to take your order and bring out your coffee. I ordered a basic breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns, sausage patties, and rye toast. I also asked for a key lime muffin to go. The breakfast was as expected. Everything was cooked perfectly, but it wasn't over the top. We ordered simple breakfasts and some of the muffins that everyone was raving about. My breakfast was the eggs and country ham with hash browns. My ham was very dry like it was several days old and was very tough to cut up. That was disappointing to say the least. I was given a child size teeny tiny plastic fork and "knife" to eat with. There must have been a special sale on these. Since the plastic utensils weren't working on the ham, I had to tear it apart with my fingers! The hash browns were nothing special, same as anywhere else. The eggs were a little runny, which I don't care for. My daughter ordered the eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Same set of tiny children's fork and knife set. She laughed when she saw them. Luckily with bacon, you can eat with your fingers. She said her breakfast tasted average. We also ordered the biscuits and gravy since people were raving about them. They were huge but very dry and doughy. We took one bite and that was that. Plus they forgot to include the gravy!! We met friends here for brunch. It is a small place on the side of the road. If it were just the building you'd easily miss it but the line of cars doesn't allow that. The parking is terrible especially if you are in a bigger vehicle but worth the hassle!! I had the shrimp and grits and am still thinking about them!! So very delicious. Ordered Harriett's breakfast because it was one of the only almost vegetarian things on the menu, except that it comes with bacon or sausage. I requested some very reasonable changes (one extra egg instead of meat) and they said no. All they were willing to give me was sliced underripe tomato. The rest of the food was also not great. Eggs were bland and overcooked. Muffin was good for a few bites, but the overly spongy texture got old quickly. I did enjoy the grits and they were kind enough to add cheddar, but that was about it. Not to be overlooked are their breakfast plates. No matter if you eat something simple like a spinach and cheese omelette or a bowl of oatmeal, Harriette's gives you a very healthy portion. And when you go big, like shrimp and grits big, bring a box of tissues. You will weep from the outstanding orchestra of savoriness. I honestly can't think of a better tasting breakfast in my life. Do yourself a favor and go shrimp and grits big. Oh, and the last wonderful thing here, the bill! My wife and I had full breakfasts including a muffin each time, and each bill came out less than if one of us ate at our resort's buffet. So we've been coming to Harriette's since I was a child and it never disappoints. Today was no different. We had a wonderful waitress named Juliette. She was kind not only to us but also my kids. The food was on point. I'm a basic breakfast girl (eggs, bacon, and hash browns). My husband loves a heavy breakfast so he opted for the southern eggs benny (biscuits and gravy with sausage and poached eggs); it was so good I even ate from it. Cute place that you need to visit in Key Largo! The service was so quick. I had the Eggs Florentine...so good! I had it with a homemade biscuit. The biscuit was large, fluffy, and just the right amount of flakiness. We tried the apple pie, bacon maple, and mango muffins! They taste amazing when you eat right as they serve it to you but we took some for left overs and they stayed moist and flavorful. My favorite was definitely the apple pie muffin but the mango and bacon maple ones were also delicious. When we turned around to see who to attribute the loud comments to, we realized it was the group of cyclists we met while at the Everglades National Park. A fun bunch of folks from the Virginia/North Carolina area who meet twice a year for long, and I mean hundreds of miles long, bike rides. Of all the gin joints, we ran into them at Harriette's! Anyway, back to the review! I ordered the All American breakfast (2 scrambled eggs served with 3 pieces of crispy bacon, hash browns and a gigantic biscuit) while my wife ordered the Harriette's breakfast (one scrambled egg with hash browns, bacon and a key lime muffin). We were bantering with our cyclist friends when our meals came quickly...fast service! My wife and I both polished off our meals...well, except for the huge biscuits...can't finish that. My wife was raving about the key lime muffin...it was still warm and velvety smooth with a fluffy consistency like an angel food cake. We also liked their coffee. Despite the multiple 5 star reviews I found this place to be a big regret and a stain on the Florida Keys dinning scene. It is definitely overhyped but the worst part is that they Microwave many things, including the Muffins that they seem to be famous for, I ordered several and while they tasted okay, they are MICROWAVED before being served to you. If I wanted microwave food I would have just purchased from the freezer section at publix. The owner was honest enough to confirm/admit to this when confronted. Also, and probably worse, was the syrup we were given had the taste of some type of adhesive/glue, super strange, owner apologized for this since he confirmed the cooks did something weird with the syrup. Owner was very nice and the staff was nice as well. No refund offered for pancake situation so major points deducted on top of all the mistakes.
