I am currently enrolled in graduate school, seeking yet another career at this "silver" era in my life, because of the advice given at the first seminar I attended here as an unemployed statistic last April. It was mostly "on our way", so we took the small detour to see what was there. SUPER interesting if you're into that sort of history. A bit disappointing when you realize what "really nice" was back in the day (tiny rooms, small house, etc). Like - this was a president's retreat. It was very peaceful there, and I can see why FDR loved it. I found it very informative. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We could have spent more time here, but had to get back on the road. I'd recommend it for an educational stop if you're in the area.

I first booked this tour in 2019, but due to some wedding-related private function, they had to…read moreclose in the afternoon that Saturday. Since I'd left my phone # when doing the booking, they called in advance and let me know. Scheduling did not work out so I just postponed. Last month, we were able to schedule some time to return to LaGrange, so I again booked via their website. You don't need to pay until you arrive, so there is really no risk. It is more polite to book in advance so the hosts can plan around that, though. We booked the 2 p.m. tour on a Saturday. There is ample parking in the lots behind the mansion. We arrived a few minutes early, but since we were the only ones touring, they went ahead and started. When we visited, the tour was conducted by a couple who are also the caretakers of the house (and who live there!). The lady is also the head of the local organization that maintains the property. The exterior is quite impressive, with huge columns surrounding the main building on 3 sides. Our tour began with a presentation of the local historical context of the home: the man who built it, how it survived the civil war, and its history since that time. The man who presented this was well versed in the local history. We then walked the house with a lady (his wife) who was also very knowledgeable regarding the property. It was interesting to see some of the evolutionary changes applied to the house as technology advanced and usage changed. The venue is now used for public gatherings and private rentals, so there is an attached catering kitchen, for example. If you have any interest in historic homes, Georgia history, or architecture in general, you will probably enjoy this tour. Duration was a bit under 90 minutes. I thought it was well worth the nominal fee.

The husband gave us a interesting history of the home as well as the inhabitants. Ben Hill,who was one the distinguishing owners of the home, served in both Confederacy and the U. S. Congresses. Hill was a notable Georgian. We learned of the Nancy Hart's, women of LaGrange who trained as soldiers during the Confederacy. The introduction to the mansion was most informing. The wife then gave us a tour of the restored mansion. Valerie's presentation was professional and educational. The pride and love they have for Bellevue is quite evident Do note that this mansion is used by various clubs in the area and is also rented for events. I would call to see if it is available to tour on the date you would like to visit.

A few years back there was flooding from a massive storm, there is a steel plate about 6 feet up on the inside of the bridge just to the right when you inter the bridge, it shows the height of the water table that engulfed the bridge. This well kept marker is located on a small traffic island in Lannett. It points out the history of…read morethe city. On the front, "Bluffton was the name of a village adjacent to West Point, Georgia in Chambers County, Alabama. Bluffton was incorporated as a town by an Act of the Alabama Legislature and approved February 20, 1866. It is not known who gave it the name of Bluffton, but the name is descriptive and apt for the town's location on a bluff near the ancient river bed of the Chattahoochee River. Twenty-eight years after incorporation, a new charter was sought from the State of Alabama because Bluffton had grown and citizens of the town decided to change its name. The name was changed from Bluffton to Lanett." And on the reverse, "On December 7, 1865, the Alabama Legislature granted an Act of Incorporation to the town of Bluffton, Alabama, predecessor to the town of Lanett. A charter was granted Bluffton, stating in less than a thousand words the duties, responsibilities and the powers inherent in the Act. It was necessary to hold an election, concerning which a record is preserved in the Chambers County records at LaFayette, Alabama, in Volume I, page 74, Corporation Records. Jude of Probate Lloyd Robertson certified to the following, under his "hand and seal" on August 17, 1893: "I do hereby certify that G.N. Croft, D.H. Adams and K. Lanier, who were appointed inspectors of an election to be held in Bluffton on August 14, 1893, for the purpose of changing the name of Bluffton to Lanett and to incorporate said town. The charter for the newly named Town of Lanett was approved. Hence the area has evolved from the simple village of Bluffton to the present industrial City of Lanett." Early records also mention two academies near this site and note that the Presbyterian Church was organized here in 1837 at the home of Thomas S. Reese, giving the community deeper roots than its incorporation date suggests. Bluffton's tanyard even produced leather for the Confederacy during the Civil War, a detail that ties the marker's narrative to the broader regional story. One of the more interesting historical threads not spelled out on the marker is how closely Lanett and West Point grew together. Streets run seamlessly between the two, and the towns functioned as twin communities long before the name change. The area's industrial rise also attracted a small but notable Jewish community whose presence shaped local commerce in the late nineteenth century.
