This is the third T&P in what is now a burgeoning mini-empire, the new Wardour Street café being…read moreits first outpost on the more famous side of Oxford Street. The new coffee shop is the biggest of the three inside with a strip of skylights and what is now instantly recognisable for regulars as the Tapped & Packed distressed-urban chic. Someone, somewhere is lining their pockets very nicely with their sales of squirrel cage lightbulbs and faux-ancien clocks. And very cool water taps. But what of the coffee? Well it's no surprise that on the two occasions I've been since it opened its doors the quality is very much on a par with No. 26 and No. 114. That is to say talented (overwhelmingly Anzac) baristas pulling tightly-made espressos and offering an array of brewed options (pour-over & AeroPress) and teas. Has Bean and Square Mile beans were available when I was there, their espresso blend changes seasonally [if you want an indication of how in to their work these guys are, check out their blog: http://tappedandpacked.wordpress.com/]. The food offering at all three cafés - this being similar to the other two - has always been a little underwhelming in my opinion (making this more of a four-and-a-half star than a full five - but we're rounding up, so...). Pastries are fine, granola and (very) fresh OJ are on offer early in the day with sandwiches at lunch, but we're not talking Kaffeine-levels of thought here. Pity they don't have an in-house chef like the aforementioned; but one thing they DO have over the other two cafés at least is a toilet, which for this end of town - assuming you're not seeking the Gents for more insalubrious reasons - is a blessing. In short, it's a brilliant space, with excellent coffee and friendly faces all round. And a toilet. Let's hope the tentacles of this multi-talented beast spread even farther afield in the future.

Ode to Department of Coffee…read more One star for the lovely staff Who greet with nods and smiles. One star for the free wi-fi So rare amongst the British Isles! One star for the rustic space With room and seats aplenty. One star for the jammin' java That's worth every single penny! ---- I reserve that fifth and final star for the mouthwatering sandwiches (I'm quite the sucker for anything on focaccia) which I've yet to try. One of these days, I'll plan well enough to make a lunchtime visit instead of an afternoon pick-me-up run.

A little heart was made in my cup (refer to posted photo) which went a long way in improving my mood after TFL had all but wrecked it. Even better, the hot chocolate was densely flavoured and not too sweet: just the way I like it! I'm glad to have the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs so close to home and even happier that they're open on Saturdays when most everything else on Leather Lane is shut.

I loved the name (obviously), the kitsch nature of laminex tables and old-school plastic chairs. I loved the staff. I loved the traditional English cafe-grub that you tend to find everywhere in London. You know, schnitzel sandwiches and roast beef rolls with gravy and quite possibly a battered sausage. The thing with these places is that you know what you're getting, and you really don't expect much. And Sarah's Cafe delivers with greasy cafe fare that would cure even the most painful of hangovers.
