Old school local diner in Kaka'ako... Kaka'ako seems to become more modernized over the years, according to friends who have lived on the island years before me. Of all the up and coming high rise condos and shopping centers is a little diner that still stands--Harry's Cafe. My husband and I would pass by Harry's multiple times a week as our old church and favorite boba spot, It's Tea are on the same block. We finally checked out Harry's a couple times last year. We've had the French toast, kimchee fried rice omelet, and the homemade corned beef hash loco moco. The French toast was light and very homey. The kimchee tasted unique with special flavors and not too much acidity like store bought kimchee! The corned beef hash truly tasted "homemade" with fresh chopped scallions and and nice crust around the corned beef. Harry's does simple, local style dishes, but what makes this place stand out more and earn five stars is the Korean Aunty who is both server and cashier! Her hospitality makes each dining experience feel like eating in someone's home, down to the glasses of water and food served on Corelle plates that remind me of my parents' home! Years ago, I didn't understand why local restaurants had to serve the same dishes (loco moco, pancakes, Spam/Portuguese sausage+eggs+rice, fried rice omelet). After visiting several favorite diners in various neighborhoods around the island, I can say each is unique to that neighborhood or family that owns the business. Oh Harry's, the reason I now dream of loco moco. The gravy is ridiculously delicious. I recommend going early because the food runs out, it tastes fresh and home made. I ordered a regular ham and eggs breakfast and pancakes, all was delicious. My husband however, ordered the corn beef hash loco moco, I regret so bad not ordering that instead. And not bc my plate was not good, but bc the loco moco was just soooo good. As a matter of fact, I think my husband left a review too. The table next to us had the beef stew which looked amazing, I bet it tasted amazing too. The service was great, it's a busy place ran by one person in the front so be patient, plus it's totally worth it. The location is a cute and looks like a small diner, my favorite. To cope with Covid times: masks are required; most tables are put away, although there are a few socially distant to dine in; hand sanitizer is available; and staff uses masks and gloves. Ordered the corned beef hash breakfast that comes with 2 scoops of rice and 2 eggs your way. Added a side order of Portuguese sausage. Total was about $15, average these days. Taking it back home my mouth was salivating for the whole trip back due to the wonderful smell! It was a great weekend indulgence! I wanted to love this place but I just couldn't....we came here today 2/17/2022 and while we loved how friendly the lady was working today we were totally underwhelmed with our food. I love enjoying traditional Hawaiian favorites and that's why this place I had such high hopes for. I had the beef stew omelette and to be honest want planning on that choice but the lady working highly recommended as a local favorite. While the beef was super tender along with the carrots and potatoes it really didn't hit the flavor mark for me and while I ate it wasn't my thing. My wife had the corned beef loco moco and she didn't really enjoy hers either. She said it had a very strange sweet flavor to it. What also was a turn off is the rice didn't taste super fresh and tasted microwaved...this would've been a home run place for me because I love divey places but you gotta deliver on the flavor and the goods. Had a call in the town area this morning so once we were done my partner and I headed to Harry's. I always drive past this place since I live in the area but never stopped! My husband and I were going to Kamaaina Sunday at Iolani Palace, but somehow the start time has changed to 10am instead of 9am that day. So we decided to have a breakfast. I have always passed by Harry's driving and finally had the chance to try. There is minimum parking so you basically will have to find a street parking. I knew the portion would be big so my husband I shared a banana pancake combo with two scoops of fried rice and mac salad added. I really loved their mac salad....bit sweet and well seasoned.
