Just what Newtown needed a great bar with interesting food. Set up camp at the front bar and order share plates at the high table or make your way to the back restaurant, both have great service and you can't pass on the atmosphere either. The waiters are attentive and enjoy explaining the food, there's nothing pretentious going on there though. Definitely one of my local faves, great for a group. My absolute fave is the deep fried oyster pough boys! so damn delicious! Fried chicken is delicoiusly tender on the inside and crispy skin on the outside. speaking of skin! I could eat that crispy chicken skin all damn day! so good downing with a cold beer. A (long) while ago a few mates ventured out to try Hartsyard, finally. Not my mates, but Chen's mates - I insisted on tagging along when they suggested it. I have to say I'm not particularly impressed by the result which gives me sadface because everyone said such wonderful things about it. Let's just get to it then, shall we? First dish was Scratchings (chicken skin, togarashi, lime [$14]) and that was a nice start because we were starving and still waiting for people to show up. Good deal of oil. I was most looking forward to the soft serve for dessert and was shattered when I tasted it. The soft serve was average and the cone was terrible - it tasted like a cheap, stale home brand cone from Franklins or something. McDonald's has a better tasting cone. From looking at the prices on the menu, we all expected either utterly amazing food or relatively large portion. When the dishes hit the table they were neither. I doubt I'll be back in the future unless someone desperately wants to try and an even slimmer chance of recommending this place to friends. So disappointed. read more

As i understand it, sharing seems to be vogue in NSW. And i don't mean tapas, this is more like a big fish or plate of food that could serve one, but instead you order multiple so everyone gets to try a selection without food envy. Hart's yard offers smaller and larger options with vegetarian and meaty selections. Be prepared to pay a little more for the quality you are getting here, but know that you don't need too many dishes to feel satisfied and satiated. Even something as simple and straightforward as poutine gets the harts yard treatment featuring beer cheese sauce over fried potatoes (not just any potato chips!) And the most succulent beef shin. It's not an everyday, but for a special occasion with a small group of friends give it a try. read more

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. For the first time in Australia, we have a pulled pork that's better than my own. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bragging that much, mine's good - really good - but I use MasterFoods Smokey BBQ to finish it off, the benchmark is not that high. Overall the food was consistently impressive. We had the pig tails, pulled pork, poutine, and soft serve - which was probably too much food for just the two of us, but we managed. Everything was really good and came with its own unique twist, but was just missing something to push it to a five star for me. Value wise, this place ranks low in my books. Hartsyard serves up small-ish portions of some of the cheapest cuts of meat at a premium. But they do serve them well. Quite well. That said, I was really happy with everything I tasted and have already planned what to order next time. And maybe the time after that. read more

After a 45 minute wait, I was quite excited to try this place. Dessert was worthy. The rest - I'm not sure. I would say that this place is trying very hard to be something, but I'm not sure what it is. I would call it a fusion of American with a fine dining, "avant guarde" restaurant. The food was very tasty and artistically served. A good mate and I shared the pulled pork and winter vegetables. The portions were small and I was still hungry. I travelled from Melbourne just to eat at this Restaurant following a segment on Food Channel show who recommended this place for top 10 places to go for Fried Chicken. When we arrived, I could not see the Fried foods on the Menu and asked the staff, only to be told that restaurant had been re launched in Jan 2018 and the Menu had totally changed. You had me at deep-fried oyster po'boy ... but the rest is definitely worth staying for! The fried chicken is perhaps the best I've ever had in Sydney, served with a fabulous buttermilk biscuit and the poutine is a wonderfully posh version of the 2am drunk food so beloved by those north of the border. Desserts were excellent too. Lovely wine list, awesome American-influenced cocktails (the pickleback martini is a must try) and ultra-friendly service. It's a lovely setup. Small place that looks like it will fit about 50. We came for a meal and the service was very personable and immediate. The cocktails were lovely (tried the Garden Party and Them Apples). The waitress recommended 2 seed (entree) and one feed (main) so we could fit in dessert which was a great recommendation. We ended up having the house made crisps, which are basically skins and some crisp breads in a vege cream cheese. The skins were good but the vege cream cheese needs some tweaking as we didn't think it was a good match. Also had popcorn prawns, which is literally what it is. Served with some aioli and burnt lemon - very good and highly recommended. The main we had was the chicken, which is classic American chicken fried chicken, with sausage gravy and biscuits (like a savoury scone). Every single item is packed with flavour with original ideas from the chef to really boost standard proteins like scallops, beef, pork etc. these pictures speak 1000 words. Some comments quoted at the table were "best sundae of my life" it considered of donuts, banana, peanuts, pretzel ice cream, cream and a cherry on top! Went with a group of 4, which was perfect so we could try more dishes. The dishes are meant to be shared, so go in a group. I'm pregnant so unable to try the delicious beers on tap or cocktails, but my other friends said they were great. We tried the Oyster Po' Boys - didn't think a deep fried Oyster could taste soooo good! We had non-oyster eaters in our group but they even had one and said they were amazing. Deep Fried Chicken with biscuits and sausage gravy was JUST like I had tried in the states and big portions too (not quite US sized portions but definitely good sized aussie portions) The beef chilli made the Poutine OUT OF THIS WORLD. The beef was sooo tender. We also tried the Head of Lettuce dish which sounded bizarre but was a delicious and light addition to rest of our heavy dishes. Whew, talk about a GLUTTONOUS meal- don't think that there is anything remotely healthy that you can get at this place, and while it's delicious (for the most part) you'll leave feeling pretty miserable. The menu is designed to share, but based on what I saw from other diners the "feed" portions are massive, so for the price (all of it is overpriced) I'd be tempted to do just a couple of feeds next time. Our waiter recommend either 4 seeds or 2 seeds and a feed for two people. Maybe he thought we were sumo wrestlers or something because there is no way you'd need that much food here, especially considering how rich it is. Opt for 3 seeds or 1 seed and a feed. The cheese fondue was a complete miss for us; it's simply just some melted cheese and bread on a plate. Boring and not worth $28 for sure. The duck, duck, duck was also a miss for me- too salty and very stingy on the foie gras. The winners of the evening were the Oyster Po Boy (especially when you add the hot sauce on the table) as well as the hushpuppies- fantastic and lick the bowl clean good! We left probably about a dish and a half on the table as it was way too much food, so I felt a bit cheated by the waiter who suggested we get that much food- Definitely something if you're in the mood for being a fatty but otherwise I would avoid! read more

The poutine here is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to come back here so I can order it again. The lamb ribs are also excellent. Incredibly tender and flavoursome. The bread/cake thing on the side is a bit weird and unnecessary, though. The fried chicken is good but not as amazing as everyone says it is. Make sure you add lots of hot sauce so it doesn't just taste like KFC. For dessert, we shared the peanut butter and banana sundae with pretzel ice cream, banana doughnut and salted fudge. It was yummy but it needed more ice cream. Towards the end it just became one big bowl of chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Too gluggy for my liking. This place is incredible. The prices look a little pricey but the 'feed' dishes are huge! Words cannot adequately describe my first whiff of the smokey lamb ribs. So often places describe food as smokey without actually delivering. But man, oh man were these ribs smokey and so so tender. We also enjoyed the fried chicken and buttermilk biscuit. For an establishment with such a frivolous and fun-sounding menu, the prices, decor and overall vibe reflected a fine dining experience with sub par Americana food. Let's be real, no one wants to eat fried chicken awkwardly with a knife and fork. No one wants to eat bland terrine. Nor do they want to pay $100 for dinner and be forced to listen to Bad Boys by Inner Circle while surrounded by dangling old-timey light globes. But if you're into this, go to a pub. It's cheaper. Our waitress noted that the plates were to share, and suggested we order one entree and two mains. Note to management; a few tables in my vicinity were complaining that they'd ordered one veg and one meat main to share, and both were served separately; the meat dishes were too "meaty" to be eaten alone. I had been looking forward to the hard-to-get booking and some fried chicken with sausage gravy, and my partner ordered poutine to go with it. Our drinks were decent, then eventually the chicken arrives ($32). I've had a lot of fried chicken in my life, mainly cheap, but I had no idea you could make fried chicken with such a thick and tooth-breaking batter. The chicken was dry otherwise and there was barely any gravy to make up for it. The sausage gravy was white cream sauce with a few hunks of sausage- I was hoping for something more authentic. At least Holiday Inn Express free breakfast authentic. We held back on eating the chicken thinking the poutine's gravy could balance it out, and after almost 10 minutes of waiting for the second dish to arrive I finally was able to flag down a member of waitstaff (no, they didn't check on our order after it arrived) and they told us that they only serve one dish at a time. After chewing through some awful fried chicken and wishing we were at KFC, we finally got our poutine ($28). The fries were soggy and limp, and when covered in the thin gravy they use, they fell apart all together. I know this is a dish best made by toothless Quebecois but the goal isn't to make something that you can grab a straw and drink like a shake. read more

This is a pretty cool place if you're after a kind of american/hipster vibe. I only had a few drinks at their bar, so can't comment on the food, but the cocktails were pretty interesting and their (self-brewed) beer is good! The bacon-infused JD cocktail was surprisingly good, perhaps due to lowered expectations! The smokey pineapple was not so good... Will definitely go back to try the food though, it looks and smells great. It's definitely a little different to the usual places around, and surprisingly meat-heavy for a hipster hangout in Enmore (though I did see some vege options). It's kind of small and intimate, though a little noisy. Very much funky/hipster/etc kind of decor (I mean they have a coat rack! and some swanky old-school long-filament tungsten light globes). So make sure you wear your plaid jacket, tight pants, and thick-rimmed glasses. read more

I could stomach that if the new menu made up for it, but it does not. $195 bought us some broccolini, some warm raw prawns and a plate of mushrooms. It was ok, not great, and after "dinner" we walked down the road and got kebabs. I wish I had of checked the menu before booking a table there after raving to friends about how much they'd love the fried chicken! Food aside it's to expensive for what you get. We (wife & I) went w/ another couple; it was the first time for us. Food was unusual and uniformly excellent in presentation, taste and creativity. We were told by the helpful wait staff that we should start with 5 items. We selected 2 from the "seed" (appetizers?) and 3 from the "feed" (entrees?), and this was perfect for us. "artichoke and mushroom salad" was our favorite. Very unusual, very tasty. "homemade bouratta" (sp?) was mozzarella cheese, basil, eggplant and a crusty bread. Excellent as well, especially the sweetness of the eggplant on the crust. "pulled pork" was a cube of pulled pork topped w/ crisped roast pork and garnished w/ crispy pork skins. Nice flavor, good quantity.. "winter vegetables" sounded blasé, but was actually extremely good and flavorful, and as with all the dishes, beautifully presented. "southern fried chicken" was 3 large, very juicy & tasty pieces of chicken served with a biscuit and gravy. Excellent, but by this time we were getting full! But not too full for dessert. We ordered two - the "maple brûlée" and "passion fruit". Both were so unusual, and so excellent in their own way!! Hard to describe, really, but the maple brûlée came with powdered chocolate and some sort of cherry compote with crispy curled mini-pastries. The passion fruit dish came with cubes that looked like fresh pineapple which were some sort of gel cube which tasted like pineapple, but "better". It's not easy to find a way to describe the food at this place - everything is so unusual and innovative. But the food is delicious, presentations are excellent and the innovations are accessible to all. We could not think of a higher rating to give this place, and would gladly go back to try some new dishes, as well as to recommend this to others. came here with my boyfriend and was blown away. the food is so unusual and tasty, and the staff are very attentive and friendly! we had the popcorn shrimp: a paper bag with actual popcorn and little fried shrimp drizzled in lemon.... it was amazing! such a great mix of flavours we also had the pigstails. oh my god. im a fan of pork but I actually started eating slowly to savour the taste. we finished with the fried chicken, gravy and biscuit. by this time we were soo full and weren't able to finish it. the waitress came over and asked us if we wanted to take our leftovers home which was refreshing in such a trendy place. we also had 2 drinks each and it came to exactly $100, very reasonable for this kind of food. all in all a great night. my only tip would be to get there as early as possible as we arrived at 6 and they started turning people away soon after. will definitely be back to try some things on the menu read more
