If you order in they will serve the sushi rolls to you on little wooden board - bless! What stands out for me is the quality of the rice for the sushi. It's soft, melt-in-the-mouth with just the right amount of acidity ... not grainy like many sushi places around. A must-have when we go is the sashimi platter. That scallop sashimi with slices of lime wedged between is so clever! The scallop takes on the taste of the raw scallop delicately. The sashimi has always been fresh, as fresh can be and melt-in-the-mouth. I recommend the crispy salmon roll ... it's so naughty ... I simply convince myself that I am just loading up on Omega 3 oils. My other favourite is Agedashi Tofu. So delicate. If you're sharing, ask for more spoons - even the most deft of orientals can't pick up silken tofu with a pair of chopsticks. That is how delicate and fine their tofu is. I'm not a big fan of skewered Japanese food. But there is plenty on the menu to cater to those who prefer cooked food. This visit we had Tuna Avocado Rolls, the Sashimi Platter, Agedashi Tofu, Unagi sushi, Tuna rolls, Soft Shell crab rolls and Crunchy Salmon Skin rolls. In past visits, I've had the nigiri sushi. If you want quality Japanese and great value for money, this is the restaurant for you. Every time I go there I sample many items on the menu I am always shocked at the bill, it is very well priced! As for the best items on the menu, well it depends on what you are into. I am a huge fan of sashimi and aburi salmon, and they make both really well. Being located close to the Adelaide Central Market I think really impacts on the freshness of the fish and dishes. The sashimi is cut with great precision, not to thick or thin. Go for the sashimi boat if you want a wide selection, it is really well presented, good for groups and great value for money. If this is first time to Wasai I should probably tell you to order a boat. It is a great way to sample the menu, also you will probably get jealous when you see them delivered to other tables. Save yourself the trouble in choosing what to eat. Then fine tune your choices later, as I will guarantee you will be back. Last thing to mention is the karaage chicken. You must try the Wasai version if you like this dish. It is a lot lighter than other versions, almost like a tempura batter but with the flavoursome karaage seasonings. My absolute favourite Aburi Salmon Roll was devine, but the Takoyaki (Octopus Deep-Fried Balls) and Chicken Kaarage was also melt-in-the-mouth delicious. The sashimi and sushi was so fresh, and thoroughly impressed my Tasmanian father who's only past experience with Japanese cuisine involved a tiny take away store in Launceston (not that there is anything wrong with that)! We did find the restaurant a tad noisy, as it was very full with lots of large groups and other birthdays being celebrated, however the fast service, amazing food and cheap prices for the quality Wasai serves up makes this observation pale in comparison. Also, and this is VERY important, book a table! Since Yakitore Rundle opened, I have been a few times - mostly for some drinks and food after going to the cinema. There is a nice outdoor seating area and big booths in the dimly lit red interior. There is cheesy cute fake fireplaces and red hanging lanterns. The menu is extensive and a little confusing with it's many sections: yakitori, lunch, sushi, grilled, fried, entree, mains, hand rolls, wok and pot dishes. The many different sections make it a little difficult to gauge how big a serving will be, and whether it is appropriate for a meal or for a snack. Some items are very reasonably priced and others less so. Most of the food I've had here has been good but nothing special and other things like the confusing menu and poor service mean I wouldn't recommend this place to my friends. If you do end up here I recommend having a look at the sake menu. Dishes I enjoyed - Korean Style Stewed Beef with Kimchi, baked salmon, and the Beef Sashimi with Sesame and Mustard seeds.
