The management changes of past years has brought back pros who have lived and immersed in Japan and Korea, and bring a sparkling authenticity to a place that had sometimes lost its way past decade. Weekend nights can be well jammed with ethnic Asian tourist ski families and globally experienced friends that know the real thing. Fresh gorgeous sushi, (and some great teriyaki chicken and beef for those who aren't into fish). Cold Japanese beers... cucumber salad, Bibimbap, tempura... just awesome. More Umami Needed! SHORT Ver: Most selections lack flavor to true authentic originals. Service was friendly and adequate, hence my giving 2 I am Asian who has lived over 50 years in Hawaii and have eaten authentic Asian cuisine from around the Pacific and Asia so I'm qualified to make this statement! LONG Version: In heavily populated Asian communities,if we see a particular race eating at that races' restaurant, it's generally a signal that the food there is gonna be good! Makes sense, right? While visiting Tahoe today my family had a craving for sushi and based on the rating for Harumi Sushi (as of 6/26' is is 3.9 Stars) we decided to go for dinner. Walking in, we were met with friendly staff and Japanese chefs behind the sushi counter! (Good sign!) their menu is mostly Japanese with some Korean dishes. I was also pleasantly surprised that there were a lot of Asian families also seated but I wasn't sure if that was a good gauge as I suspected that these families were all probably like ours-visiting from outside of the area. I crossed my fingers. We ordered various sushi rolls, a Tonkotsu Ramen, Tempura Udon, Pork Tonkatsu, and a Dotsolbop. Kitchen help must've been short staffed because each dish came out singly with minutes in between the next single dish and by the time the last dish came out, the first few people had already been long finished. First: Tonkotsu Ramen soup broth was completely tasteless. I have packaged Tonkotsu Ramen from my Asian store in Vegas that has much more flavor and body that the one I had. The noodles were simply noodles, the egg was not ajitama. It was simply a half boiled egg. The rest of the dish was not appealing nor tasty at all. Even the charsiu tasted old if not just pan fried for presentation! I could not finish it. The Tempura with the udon was adequate for an AYCE Japanese style buffet so, 'mid' as my kids would say. The udon, I was told wasn't bad, I guess I should've order the Shoyu Ramen instead. The Tonkatsu also fared better in taste rating than my ramen. The Dot Sol Bop came after everyone was finished eating. It had chopped lettuce on it among a couple other non traditional looking veggies. There was very little meat in it. After adding the kochujang sauce and tasting, it was the strangest version of this dish I have ever tasted. The vinegar flavor coming from each bite was so overwhelming. We didn't know if it came from the rice mixture or from the kochujang sauce. Not even half of this dish was eaten. And this was with half the group sampling it. No one wanted to finish this dish. The sushi rolls looked like they were a little on the old side however all said the sushi was pretty good. Not amazing, but adequate. Mid range quality ingredients. My conclusion is that the quality of the ingredients is in need of some improvements. The sushi chefs are getting the job done with what they have. The cooked dishes, however, need to be reexamined If you truly know what Asian cuisine is because you've grown up with it and/or have experienced it, you will walk away disappointed especially if you order a non-sushi entree. The one funny thing we all noted was the strange and very mellow music that was playing the whole time we were there. We were looking for a Japanese spot that served Ramen while we were in Tahoe. After checking out several Japanese spots, my fiancée happened upon this joint located on the east side of the lake in Zephyr Cove. This joint is the perfect combination of Japanese cuisine: Ramen and Sushi! Come to this Japanese restaurant everytime we are in South Lake Tahoe. We had two types of sashimi and both were delicious. Entrees were split between a teriyaki salmon and tempura. Again, both were cooked perfectly. The staff was attentive. The only negative was my miso soup which didn't have any bits of tofu or vegetables. I'll be back soon. read more

We also tried some sashimi, choice C at $50 price point and they had fresh Toro for tonight which was i think $30 for 5 pieces sashimi. I really don't like leaving negative reviews as I want all Reno-Tahoe business's to thrive. However, I am also committed to helping the gluten-free community eat at great spots and choose places that accommodate us. We came here after skiing and the nice server told me there would be some gluten free options for me. She then came back and said she was wrong there was no gluten free soy sauce or tamari. So I picked several things that usually are gluten free and I wouldn't need GF soy sauce. Some nigiri (would use lemon) and a salad. Sever came back again and said the sushi rice had gluten and the dressing on the salad. So I asked her if she could ask the kitchen what they could do gluten free and she came back and said nothing could be done gluten free! The whole place was really quiet (2-4 other people) so it wasn't that they were too busy to think about this. Maybe everyone that day was new and clueless, but I've never had this happen at a sushi place. Most of the sushi spots in Reno-Tahoe are happy to accommodate gluten allergies and have a gluten free soy sauce - sooooo my advice is pick one of them. You can find them in my reviews read more

One of my favorite sushi spots to go to in Tahoe. We got the gyoza, bento box with the salmon teriyaki and sashimi, as well as the Carnation roll. Gyoza was crispy, hot, and delicious. The sauce complimented the appetizer very well. The Carnation roll was topped with tuna and salmon sashimi with two different sweet and spicy sauces, topped with fried scallops and cucumber on the side. I really love the elements on this dish, all flavors worked together very well to create an outstanding taste. It may look like too much on a roll but everything was needed for the roll to taste great, and the cucumbers were very refreshing after biting into this saucy savory roll. However, my only complaint is that the portion was small for it to be worth $23. The bento box was the perfect size for the price of $18. I got three salmon filets, four pieces of sashimi, salad, and rice, along with miso soup. This is the perfect quick lunch combo. The miso soup was extremely hot but deliciously salty. The salmon was smoky and packed with a sweet teriyaki sauce. The salad had the perfect amount of dressing. My favorite part about this restaurant is how fresh the sashimi tastes. The rice was warm and a bit sticky, but thats how I like to eat my rice in general. The ambience was small yet cozy and perfect for a sit down. The service was quick and attentive, the food also came out fairly fast. I have to say that I am very surprised that a sushi restaurant at this quality is rated so mediocre. It is easily the best sushi restaurant I've ever been to in the Tahoe basin and also in Truckee. This is a family run operation and it's run extremely well with the husband being a true sushi, chef and his very amiable wife being a great server and hostess. The quality of the fish was excellent worthy of any restaurant in the Bay Area. The maki and nigiri are expertly crafted and well thought out. The chef even has a secret sauce made of nine separate ingredients which puts everything over the top. I can no longer go there and traditionally order either soy sauce or tamari or Ponzu sauce when his sauce is superior to all of the above. Had the Toro, Sake and Baked Mussels to start. I moved onto the Megan Roll, which was excellent, but I forgot to tell him to leave off the mayonnaise sauce which tends to distract me from the true sushi. I finished with the Salmon Roe and Quail Egg. It was a great "dessert " . Speaking of dessert. He also comped us with this very novel deep-fried marshmallow cookie, which was good. Got severe food poisoning. We know it was here because both of us got sick and we had not eaten anything anywhere else before or after. Sadly as the food was good, and one of the best tempura soft shell crabs we have had. The waitress was not knowledgeable of the menu or what could be done and had to keep asking the Chef and kitchen. Ok. So we were going to go to the Korean Ramen place but found out it's in Carson city. We "settled" for the place and ordered the Grinch roll, lion king, elk, dragon, spider, taokyaki balls, and to tonkatsu ramen. The rolls are good but standard fare. However I'm really surprised by how good the ramen was. The broth was both creamy and rich and not overly salty. Many places in the Bay Area tend to be overly salty but this one is perfect. For a sushi place I would go here just for the ramen. The only thing I would dock points on the ramen is the noodles isn't fresh. If it were freshly made it would make the ramen legendary. read more

There were a lot of choices here that can satisfy different age groups if your party is big. Price is about average and portion is a bit smaller side. I've been staying at Wyndham South Shore many years but only came here today. I think I will definitely try here when visit Tahoe next time. We've been visiting Harumi for several years, and love it. We always sit at the sushi bar so we can watch the food being prepared and get to know the sushi chefs.
