We have all since moved out of the bronx but still visit the Church on a weekly basis and donate cash in the baskets at Mass. I am Baptism a newborn and was told that because I do not have a envelope number I would not be able to be provided a Sponsor Letter. I was told that even mailing 50 cents a week would constitute me as a practicing Catholic. I signed up on line for weekly donations so my name would be attached to the money so the Church could prove my donations. The secretaries are rude and had the audacity to get loud on the phone and hung up on me multiple times. Shouldn't they be a little nicer and respectful to the general public?? The hostility from these people has me baffled. My 3yr old son can recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, and 10 Commandments word for word. That makes me a practicing Catholic. Sharing my faith and teaching the Good Word to my child. Sending money doesn't make me or anyone else a practicing Catholic. Where in the Bible does it say we need to give money to be loved and saved by the Lord Jesus Christ. Yelling and hanging up the phone on people should not be tolerated by anyone especially personnel from the Church. Money doesn't define a Catholic. Your faith, your words, your actions, and how you live out your faith everyday does. Anne, my God knows I practice my Faith everyday and have past it along to my husband and son. May God forgive you for defining someone's faith with a dollar sign and may he have mercy on your soul.

I don't know anything about the senior pastor at all so I can't comment about that. Usually visitors to a church assess the church by the sermon and music. But I have the unique experience of assessing by the inner workings I have observed and taken part in. Calvary Baptist Church is the church that the Billy Graham Association uses when they either have an event in NY or when they have a TV event and need phone counselors. I do have to comment on what one of the reviewers said. They said they like it when only one pastor preaches. I have to respectfully disagree. It is much healthier for the church members to hear different perspectives rather than just one person and it also shows that the pastor is not a control freak. If he was he would be hesitant to share the pulpit. It is also healthier for the pastors to be able to hear what others are saying in order to grow spiritually themselves. That way they can be accountable to the other pastors and not just be a dictator. If you know of a large church where the pastor refuses to share the pulpit be sure he is a dictator. Having more than one preacher is a healthy sign especially in a large church. The pastor I have worked with projects on at Calvary is extraordinarily humble so much so that he would be embarrassed at being named in a review so I won't name him. I worked under him on some volunteer projects and his leadership is what made them run smoothly. He had respect for all of the volunteers and didn't feel he had to control us or even know much about us in order to trust us to do our jobs. At many churches these days the control issue is big. If you don't let them control you then you are called rebellious. I am referring to churches you would know of if you are a Christian in NYC. I never experienced this at Calvary. Volunteering here was always an uplifting experience. Calvary is spiritually and socially solid. For my non conformist personality denominational churches seem too restrictive with their man made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with God but rather tradition. Calvary did not come across that way at all. The congregation seems to have freedom and is warm and friendly. They seem to be less self absorbed than many other large congregations in NYC. Many large churches in NYC have this attitude that you go to church and don't dare reach out to anyone because they have their own lives. Calvary doesn't seem that way. My volunteer work with them was from 2001 -2009. So I was able to observe how they function with each other over the course of many years. It is kind of silly to me to read 5 star reviews of other churches I have seen here by visitors to a church who may be touched by the music or theater of it all or the pastors charisma but know nothing of what goes on in the day to day functions of the church. I happen to know the inner workings of a few of those churches and I know they are at best cult like in terms of how they function. But if you attend the service as a visitor all you see is the production they put on. Calvary is pretty basic and sincere from what I have seen and by basic I mean no theatrics to fool you. Unlike many other NYC churches Calvary is not known for their pastor so it is not man focused but God focused. I have been a Christian after being an agnostic for years since the 1980's. I have been to many churches in NYC and know people at most popular churches in NYC due to my volunteer work. I have never heard anything bad about the church and it is the only large church other than Evangel I haven't heard anything bad about in the last 20 plus years that I have been a Christian. For that they get 5 stars. There are no scandals here unlike many of the other large churches in NYC. Here is a list of the ministries they offer. No one in the church judged me instead they embraced me with open arms, prayed for me, poured into me, and uplifted me. That very 1st service I prayed and was prayed for at an alter call & my life has been diff since. I saw spiritual growth attending this church. They really preach the word and they care about the members. It's a small baptist church in BX. My only reason for finding a new church home is because I loved and the distance I is very far from BX to Queens. They also do food pantries to help people I believe Tues is the day for that. Service starts about 10:30 AM Sunday's and there is also prayer meeting on Fridays most of the time. You will be blessed attending this place. I promise.

We were greeted by staff from the church outside the building and given envelopes upon arriving. Then quickly whisked away into the auditorium. Seems like most visitors sit in the back during service. The women in front of us were regulars and welcomed us with smiles. We were surprised at how casual most people were dressed (jeans, t-shirts, sleeveless, etc.) including those performing on stage. So, you don't have to go all out and dress in Sunday best. They started off with a youth choir, followed by another song by the youth, and then a group of children on stage going through a baptism. It felt very much like a Broadway stage show with loud music and lights. We hoped to see an adult choir perform, but perhaps that is on another date/time. I think the actual sermon didn't start until after 11:30am? We had to leave a bit early but had to wait until one of the ushers would let us out. There is a restroom downstairs (didn't see an elevator) where they have a TV so you can continue to hear the service. We filled the envelopes given to us at the start and dropped them in a donation box outside the auditorium. Eventually we were ready to exit and stood by the door for a moment to gather ourselves as there was heavy rain. We had one volunteer come up asking if we need something and we mentioned no we're just heading out. She came over again and I felt as if we were being pushed out. Sort of like if you're not going to stay and worship, you need to exit asap! It felt a bit pushy. Overall, a very casual church experience that felt a bit more theatrical than a traditional church. They seem to marry the traditional with the modern day. It is good they get their youth involved & most seemed moved by the sermon. It was nice to meet some welcoming folks that regularly attend but was a bit offput by volunteers' sort of pushing us out at the end. Worth a visit to check out once if you are curious.

I attended Abyssinian Baptist Church for several years while Rev. Butts (rest in peace) was the…read morepastor. During that time, I honestly didn't learn the core gospel truths that I needed most. The church did not clearly teach that we are saved by grace through faith alone, or that we are not under the works of the law for salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Because I didn't have a firm foundation in the true gospel of grace, I later got pulled into a Hebrew Israelite group that taught justification by works and keeping the law. I stayed in that system for 15 years, trapped under heavy bondage, because I didn't know how to defend against their false doctrine. Thankfully, Jesus set me free. The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the real gospel -- that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ's finished work, not by law-keeping. I'm sharing this testimony because I wish someone had clearly taught me these truths back then. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Abyssinian Baptist Church as a place where someone will be grounded in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. I don't know how the church is today under new leadership, but during my years there it left me unprepared and vulnerable to false teaching. If you're looking for a church that clearly teaches salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, I would encourage you to keep searching and testing everything against Scripture. The service is designated as a high mass with portions of the service sung and portions orally stated.. We have a choir all year with the exception of summer months. We have a working Vestry, an Episcopal Church Womens group which runs a monthly Food Pantry for the community giving out non-perishable food items, one bag per family currently. We also sponsor a Poetry Night during February, an Annual Tea Party ,usually during June. From time to time, we have other fund raising activities which are posted under this church site and on Welcome2theBronx site. We welcome families with children and encourage attendance at Sunday School.
