Harvey Nichols or Harvey Nicks as it is often referred to, is a large department store, just outside St James Quarter in Edinburgh city centre, a large department store in a grand building, this is a nice place to shop if you're looking for something a little more premium with a selection from food to fragrance. The store feels high-end so is fancy and well laid out, and the staff are friendly, with many creams and products on hand to test out before purchase. The store closes at 6 pm between Sunday and Wednesday, opening an hour later between Thursday and Saturday, regardless I feel this is far too early for a large department store in a big city, the shopping hours are not well catered to workers, and those who prefer to head out in the afternoons. There are places to sit and take a break while shopping in the store, which I appreciate, and the vibes inside the store are very nice, overall, with some nice products, so it is well worth a look in if you have time while shopping in Edinburgh. The store has five floors, including a Brasserie and Bar on the Fourth Floor, with impressive views of the city, including the Old Town. 4* read more

At the very top of this mall there is a terrace overlooking St-Andrews monument. It's really cool! My friend and I got some drinks and some chips and had a great time. I got a margarita frozen and they were very generous with the alcohol! The chips came with this really delicious dipping sauce (and only cost 4 pounds). I took my boyfriend, John to Harvey Nicks for some birthday prosseco last week purely because I wanted to sit on the roof terrace and pretend I'm fancy. I used to go to the Harvey Nichols roof terrace all the time with my best friend when she first emigrated to Edinburgh and was earning ludicrous sums of money as a specialist mixologist (no, I'm not entirely sure either). The joy of this was that she would "treat" me and we'd spend many happy afternoons sipping cocktails and concealing our amazement that they'd let us in such an establishment. She's now upgraded to London and afternoons on the roof terrace are a distant memory. And unfortunately I think they'll stay that way. Don't misunderstand me - there's nothing nicer than drinking prosseco on a balcony so high that it threatens to give you a nosebleed. But Harvey Nichols just doesn't feel as special as it once did. We ordered delicious cake, and the staff kept popping over to top up our water glasses, and although the sun didn't shine as brightly as my memory, it was very nice indeed. But there's something about paying £35 for a bottle of fizz, while the table next to you is wearing flip flops and putting their feet on the seats, which jars with me. It's nice, but not as nice as it should be. I dress up to go to Harvey Nichols. I treat it as an occasion. And I never fail to be disappointed by other people who don't. If you have a very rich lover who wants to wine and dine you beside one of the best views across Edinburgh city centre, then by all means hit up the roof terrace. But if you're footing the bill and looking, like me, to feel fancy, then I'd urge you to possibly look at the wealth of other champagne bars Edinburgh has to offer. read more

Harvey Nichols is undoubtedly Edinburgh's chicest and most stylish department store. Over four levels, you'll find premium cosmetics, a nail bar, the latest in designer fashion and accessories, a food hall and a restaurant, bar and brasserie. Generally I only come here for the bar, beauty and food hall - everything else is slightly out of my price range. However, the sales can be pretty epic; I once found a pair Miu Miu jeans reduced to £20, so there are bargains to be had if you're canny enough. They really pull out all the stops with their exciting and adventurous window displays (think a massive dinosaur made out of coat-hangers or paint splattered mannequins dressed in scarily expensive clothes), it's a spectacle worth seeing, even if you can't afford any of the goods they're displaying. This is a shop at the cutting edge of retail and is a must do on any serious shopping trip. read more

Bizarre and elaborate, this store has the best displays in Edinburgh. I love looking in the window and trying to figure out what the hell is going on. 2. Mac make up counter. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Probably on commission. 3. Christian Louboutin shoes. One day you will be mine. 4. Food Hall. Very strange but l had never been to Harvey Nichols before, for some bizarre thought that I've just never had the time. I've only been on the two levels, checking out the aftershave selection on offer & the men's clothing on the second level. I was quite surprised how bizarre this store really was with the mad window displays and odd dressed mannequins in their displays. I did find new aftershave & two new shirts, with a little help from some of the polite staff, definitely will be back to check out the rest if the store. read more

If there's one city in the UK that really doesn't suit having this crass, tasteless testament to conspicuous consumption, then it's Edinburgh. I've already voiced my concern in previous reviews that Edinburgh's genteel charm seems to be slowly getting swallowed up by the hideous WAG culture that dominates shops and nightclubs in Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester. Harvey Nick's is the embodiment of this. Champagne (Cava) nail bars, 12 inch high shoes with "Dior" emblazoned on them, and aisles filled with screeching, orange girls reeking of perfume. It's a million miles away from the traditional opulence of Jenner's, and as a general rule, if you're buying something from this store, the main reason behind the purchase is to show people you (or more likely your present lover) can afford it. Severely lacking in customers for it's first few years but bizarrely seeming to be a bit busier since Britain went bankrupt, it gets an extra star for the food hall. I rarely buy anything, but it's great for finding unusual foreign ingredients and meal ideas that I can go and look for somewhere else. read more

Confession - I don't tend to shop in Harvey Nics for clothes! I love the food hall though - Cuckoo's Cakes and good range of special gluten free items like gnocchi and pasta. The beauty dept is fab - a treat is the Nails Inc champagne file and polish. Buy your polish at the same time and get your nails done for £12 which includes a couple of glasses of champagne :-) Students also benefit from cheap brows. Show your student card and brows at Shavata are only £10, compared to £17 full price. So HN, I don't bother much with the clothes but you are decent for all the extras :-) read more

This review is only for the food market on the top store. Amazing! Great selection of the best gourmet types of food from all over the world. There was amazing stuff I'd never even heard of. From giant tabasco sauces to the best Scottish jams, to Japanese candies, there is everything here. The prices are kind of high. It's fun to walk around and look at everything. It's spacious, nicely lighted, and well designed. The staff is really really nice, and I appreciated all the help that they offered me. There are two places you can go to eat on the top floor! I absolutely love this shop. I enjoy the finer things in life and don't mind dropping by for a quick look at the handbags and shoes. I would rather spend my money on one luxury item that will last me years that lots of items that will be worn and out of fashion in a few months. My favorite part of Harvey Nichols is the Mac and Chanel Cosmetics. I could easily spent hours shopping the stands and having my makeup done. I always make sure i stock up when i am in and can spend hundreds at a time as its just so brilliant. I also very much love the winter sales. I love a a bargain and although i will spend on something i truly love i tend to grudge spending lots on shoes and bags. The sales are brilliant as last year i found a Wildfox swimsuit reduced from £180 to £9 and a Wildfox bracelet reduced from £120 to £5. This year i also found a pair of Jeffrey Campbell's reduced from £150 to £5, so its really affordable for everyone once the sale rolls round. However not all items are reduced this much unfortunately. I love the new Gucci boutiques they have inside and i can admire all the beautiful bags and jackets, despite not being able to afford them. I find the Louboutins to be reasonably priced. You can get a decent pair of hidden platform in nude for £450 which i think is fair. Out of my price range but still fair. I really love the 4th floor however as i can find all the candy and cocktails and sushi. read more

Sometimes, I go onto the Christian Louboutin website and find a pair that I like, and just sit there and stare. I don't care if it's sad, I don't care if it's borderline weirdo, I just absolutely adore them. So you can only imagine my sheer girlie inner screaming fit when I get to the second floor of Harvey Nichols and the small but perfectly formed shoe collection comes into sight. I always go straight for the Louboutins and any store which stocks them is worth their salt in my opinion. Do I have a pair? No. I wear New Look jeans, go figure. I do love Harvey Nichols though, just because I have always imagined one day being able to afford to buy the clothes, shoes and general loveliness it sells. It makes me think of what could happen, what might be in my future....shallow as it might sound, I would be truly happy if I could one day afford to own just one pair of Louboutin shoes....and if I could afford to shop here then I would probably be in a very well paid job, hurrah for that. Many years ago I worked in Knightsbridge, where my two local corner shops were Harrods and Harvey Nichols. It understandably gave me a slightly distorted view of the world of shopping, but one that I was happy to indulge in (even if most of the indulgences were during the sales). Fast forward to the present day and my two local corner shops Scotmid and Shelter. The credit crunch bit me a long time before it hit the nation. BUT, and it is a huge B U T - I still have my Harvey Nicks card and I still get invited to their shopping events. Oh how I love them dear reader.. Wandering around HN is like flicking through Vogue without having to splash out on the cover price. Work the store thus: Limber up among the sunglasses where you can try on designer brands with no hassle from the staff. Mooch past the bags, accessories and make up where sales assistants are a wee bit less passive and head for the fashion floors. I ignore menswear but you don't have to. Next the designer label floor, cooing over the Dries van Noten, drooling midst the Marni and laughing hysterically in Chloe. Having numbed myself with the £600+ price tags I head to the affordable fashion floor (no, I know it isn't cheap, but since I am not actually in the store to shop that ISN'T THE POINT) where I memorise the styles ready for the real shopping in H&M. Thence to the Food Hall. Here you can buy the hottest chilli sauce in the west, the most expensive jar of Marmite ever and, in the right season the odd jerusalem artichoke. If you want to. I usually come out with a packet of oat cakes; the packaging is to die for. On the same floor are the restaurant and cafe. I ate in the cafe shortly after it opened a few years ago and it was splendid. Whether it still is will require further research. The long and the short of all this is that unless you are well off or exceedingly cavalier with your credit cards, treat Harvey Nichols as a shopping theme park; play the role, enjoy the style and act like a princess for a couple of hours. Then return to Princes Street, hit H&M, Zara and Top Shop and spend, spend, spend with a clear conscience. read more

The sales girl helped by taking name etc to notify me if they come in and offered alternative solutions. Can't won't to go back shopping. read more

What's not to love about Harvey Nic's? I am really surprised that a previous reviewer has described this massive store as lacking in customers because I would have to say whenever I have been in it has been rammed! It is a tourist attraction as much as a department store after all. On the ground floor you will find a sublime collection of cosmetics, jewelery and accessories. The first floor is dedicated to Menswear, boring moving on. The second floor is the first of two Womenswear floors and this one has the more expensive designer clothes and generally more formal collections. Oh and of course the designer shoes, sigh. The third floor is more casual Womenswear and the fourth floor is the restaurant which I have reviewed separately. I love going to Harvey Nic's just to be in close proximity to brands I will never be able to afford. Brands like Balenciaga, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balmain, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Peter Pilloto oh oh oh the list goes on and on! The layout of the store takes you seamlessly from one to die for designer to the next until finally you are spent, ahhhh. read more

Ok, so Edinburgh is more or less renowned for having posh students (yah's, for those in the know) and Harvey Nichols is their playground. Even the staff have hair to envy Winehouse. But you know what...there is something quite nice about watching them run around after me. The things sold in Harvey Nichols are very high-end, but if you have a big event coming up then it's worth splurging sometimes. When it comes to Harvey Nichols, I have a routine. When my mum comes down to Edinburgh for a visit, we ALWAYS make an appointment at the champagne nail bar on the ground floor, before heading up to the 4th floor to drink French Martini's until it's time for dinner. Bliss! Infact, I consider myself to be somewhat of a French Martini connoisseur, and Harvey Nicks is the best in Edinburgh! Absolutely delicious. My mum and I are regulars - we are even in the brochure. Not even kidding. All in all, I could spend all day in Harvey Nichols. There's something quite exciting about getting all dressed up to go shopping and spoil yourself. It's not just a shop, it's an experience! read more

Things obviously aren't what they seem in the great British depression. Harvey Nics still pack in St Andrew's Square tent dodgers, eager to part with hundreds of quid for this seasons 'bang on trend' t-shirts. In terms of shopping experience I'm not sure that Harvey Nics does either the boutique-feel or department store experience that well. The labels on offer are on the rarer side of mainstream but not exclusive, and I think they need a bit of a re-model to freshen things up inside the store. That said the winter sale is always worth a gander if you've been good girls and boys and saved your pennies. read more

What's not to like here. I love the Harvey's in Edinburgh - my favorite floors are the bottom floor and the top floor. Bottom floor is beauty, handbags, accessories, jewellery, sunglasses. I like the beyond beauty section the best - they have lots of cult brands including huge range of cowshed and Bliss Spa products. There is also a huge perfume section with great range - many that you just don't get else where in Edinburgh. There is a nail bar too where you can have a glass of champs while your nails are being done. Top floor is kitchen, food, wine, cocktail bar, brasserie and restaurant. The food and wine section is excellent - really interesting range in both. The kitchen department has lovely glass wear and other interesting gifts. The cocktail bar is worth a visit as is the brasserie and restaurants. All 3 have wonderful views across Edinburgh and an outside balcony for the odd nice day we have. The middle floors are mostly fashion - one floor of men's and another 2 of women's. I don't have the budget to get much from here! What is also great is that down the side of Harvey's is now Multrees walk with lots more interesting designer shops. read more

I was in Edinburgh in August & had a cappachino in the Cafe on a 'high up' floor maybe it was the fourth floor. We luckily had a seat right at the window & even on this rainy day the view over St Andrew Square to the castle was stunning. It was festival time so Edinburgh had a real buzz read more

Despite being incredibly expensive, Harvey Nichols is well deserving of its four star rating. To begin, the staff are polite, friendly and handle requests competently. When it comes to breath of choice and selection. Harvey Nicols wins hands down. You're certainly spoiled for choice and this may reflect in your cash balance, as you're most likely to see something while wandering around. My only regret about this store is that unless you've got the money then you're unlikely to shop here for anything more than one or two items. read more

The building was very impressive on first viewing, modern but seemed to fit into the local landscape. As we approched there was a Doorman in uniform, a nice touch but that seemed to be the last of the old fashioned image. Inside each department was laid out professionally but clinically. There didn't seem to be much of an atmosphere. The top floor food hall was interesting, if only to see how much they had jacked the prices up on everyday good jost beacuse they had their name on them. I did buy a packet of biscuits as a present but more so that I could get a bag to say I'd been there! read more

I do like to wander around Harvey Nichols, thinking that one day I will be able to shop here without checking out the price tag before deciding if I like an item. This shop is really for rich people, there is no getting away from it. Unless you have gone into the store to buy cosmetics (on the ground floor) or food (on the top floor) you need a serious amount of cash to be accepted into this store. Last Christmas I was given £150 vouchers and thoroughly enjoyed my shopping experience, adding £50 onto the price I was delighted to get a lovely D&G leather bag for half price. However the person next to me spent close to £10,000 on 2 bags and a belt which put a bit of a downer on my shopping trip. The majority of the staff are glamorous and intimidating, I cannot say that I have ever found a friendly shop assistant in this shop. Perhaps if I had dressed up and spend a fortune they would have treated me better!! read more

I'm sorry, I am not a big fan of HN. I only really go in from time to time to go to the Foodhall. Very expensive in the main, but they do stock some ingredients that are hard to find elsewhere, especially American and Mexican ingredients. They are also good for unsual chocolates and teas and have a small but good deli counter with meats, olives and some cakes and bakery. You can take a lift from the ground floor straight to the food hall, and back down, so you don't need to go through the whole shop to get there. Cafe also has a good view ! read more

The Brasserie? A Caesar Salad amounts to a bowl of dry lettuce (had to ask for dressing). Chips came cold (had to ask for them to be cooked but then some were raw). Croque Monsieur was a pillow of fat ( had given up complaining by then) The one star is just for the view. read more

The atmosphere is so dry in the store, but that's probably got a lot to do with the lack of customers. Although the store has a lot of great stuff for sale, and reasonably good prices too, the unhelpful staff and somewhat drab and tired décor on floors one to three makes the store a quick dash than a delight. The restaurant's great, though, which is why I've given the store three stars. Don't let the non-existent crowd fool you, the food's up to scratch, and with realistic prices. read more

i admit it, i'm a girl who enjoys the finer things in life. a designer handbag, chanel no 5, and a glass of champange, so frankly it's rather hard to dislike a shop where i can get all three of these items while being treated like royalty. admittedly though, i don't shop in Harvey Nics. working for the public sector my salary just doesn't stretch far enough to buy a pair of shoes that costs me the same amount of money as my monthly rent (i wish it did though!) but this shop isn't snobby and no one there knows i can't buy that gorgeous designer dress so i'm free to browse and look at all the pretty items at my leisure. i love that this store is all chic and modern looking with clean lines and frequently changing window displays. the christmas winter displays are seriously fantastic!! but my favourite part of this shop is the 4th floor (aka the floor where i can actually afford things!) i've been to the bar here and the restaurant both of which i've enjoyed very much. i've always had a quick lunch at Yo Sushi and a cupcake treat at the chocolate bar across the way. then there is the food shop with a gorgeous deli counter that features freshly made soup and sandwiches that are quite reasonably priced. there are also loads of deli meats, cheeses, and olives. AND there is a gourmet chocolate counter where you can make up your own box AND there are AMAZING cupcakes you can take away! yes the cupcakes are a wee bit pricey but they are worth every penny, so delicious!! i also enjoy a quick browse through the other specialty food and alcohol items they have available. this is a shop for the finer things in life, a place to be savoured and enjoyed but perhaps not a place for the every day. thankfully i have John Lewis for the rest of my life :) read more

Harvey Nichols has a great cosmetics hall on eth ground floor, with fabulous brands. The downside with this, as with the rest of the shop, is quite a large number of the staff act in a uninterested manner and look down upon you if you're not dressed in the latest designer gear. This is a shopping experience to rate all shopping experiences against! The whole place is overloaded with sales assistants just trying to tempt you to spend more money than you know you can afford! They are very persuasive so be warned! The department store is also designed brilliantly and laid out well. If you do then its certainly the place to go. The ground floor is taken up with an amazing selection of beauty departments, some lovely but expensive designer handbags and accessories. There is also a nail and juice bar here. Upstairs there are two floors of ladies wear, a menswear floor and the Food department. There is also a restaurant and bar. There are toilet facilities on the top floor. Its a great place to browse around and if you arent wanting to spend too much money you can get some lovely sandwiches to take away which arent too expensive. I only ever use the food hall, as historically it has always been excellent with a good range of products reasonably priced. Not so any more, the fresh veg is no longer available, the deli counter is terrible compared to my last visit. (The girl didn't even know what Chorizo was, how is she working there?), and the mark up on wines and spirits is ridiculous. A bottle of Martin Miller gin is £28 compared to £19.99 in Oddbins. Let your feet do the talking and go to the original Valvonna & Crolla on Elm Row for what a deli should be. read more

Going through the usual Harvey Nick's stuff on the shelves, I thought I would give something different this Christmas. Curiously, I ordered a cupcake and OMG!!!! They are wonderful!!! I ended up ordering 50 cupcakes for Christmas! They are beautifully decorated with lots of different frostings and toppings... It didn't help that I have a sweet tooth! They come in boxes of 6, 12 or as per how you would like it. You can choose a variety of them for a box. I would say, let your artistic side come out and personalize it. They also can be individually boxed with the HN ribbon. The staff who was helping me out was surprised at how much I was ordering but then again, if they taste that good, why not? read more
