We had a lovely spacious room that overlooked a storybook pastoral view, complete with frolicking sheep. In the morning we were provided with one of the best breakfasts we have had at any facility. Breakfast, served amiably and with courtesy by Mr. Martin, allowed a choice from multiple options including a traditional Irish breakfast, porridge with Bailey's or Irish whiskey, and other options. The scones were first rate, and the selection of fresh fruit was one of the best I have seen anywhere - better than many of the finest hotels. Our hostess, Josephine, was most gracious and provided many useful details regarding the sites to see in the area, and navigation to them, as well as our next destinations. She recommended a walking tour of Derry that was of unusually good quality. All in all, I would have to agree that it is not an exaggeration to state that this is the best B&B in Ireland. The Martin family sets the standard for caring for the traveler. They evince a level of care and warmth that clearly transcends that of a mere business concern.

As with most hotels in Ireland, this one was not air conditioned and the only option to moderate the room temperature was to open the windows. Unfortunately, there was a lot of street noise and we had to keep windows closed due to the noise. For Americans touring Ireland, it's important to mention that most hotels don't have air conditioning and that you need to open the windows in order to moderate the temperature. We stayed at this hotel as part of a 15-day tour of Ireland and Scotland with CIE Tours. This hotel was selected by CIE and was one of 9 hotels we stayed in during our 2-week tour. We had 31 people in our group and typically occupied 16 rooms at each hotel we visited. Each hotel provided a full buffet breakfast every morning and typically we had dinner at least once at each hotel. We were at this hotel for 1 night. We had 1 dinner and 1 breakfast in this hotel - both were very good. The breakfast buffet was a traditional Irish breakfast (eggs, ham, sausage, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and a nice assortment of pastries and cereal). The staff - both in the restaurant and at the front desk were very personable and very willing to help with any questions.

The area is sparse, summed up as splendid isolation and it is desolate yet stunning, even on a breezy cold afternoon, so it was a stop for coffee, soft drinks and the restrooms in the hotel. The servers were charm personified. We did see food being served to other guests in the dog friendly bar with typical Sligo hospitality - generous portions - we even petted a pooch. We had English friends with us on the trip and they had showed some interest in what we call 'The Troubles' so Warrenpoint and Derry sure were on our itinerary, but this quiet, peaceful place was a scene of death for someone related to the British Royal Family: a Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma commonly known as Lord Mountbatten who was holidaying at his summer home, Classiebawn Castle, on the Mullaghmore Peninsula in Sligo, where he lobster potted and fished for tuna. He departed this mortal coil on the same day eighteen British paratroopers were killed at Warrenpoint, four miles from my home and we heard the blasts, the deadliest assault against the British army in our 'Troubles'. We strolled the near empty beach and the still harbour a while then off to our hotel.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. We were in a non smoking room overlooking the lough and…read morethe gentle hills and we had easy access to the pool area from our room. Our son, wife and grandkids were adjacent to us in a family room. The rooms are large with some furnishings and a tv. All the staff we met were friendly with an easy way about them, and they took time to chat with us and play with the kids. They served all of us very well indeed throughout our stay. We had one late night disaster in our room, courtesy of one of our grandkids, which was dealt with in a timely and sympathetic way. Our 3 night package included daily breakfast & 3 evening meals. Evening main menus changed nightly but the sweet menu did not. That said, there were plenty of great desserts to choose from. The dining room was on the 1st floor overlooking the lough and used for breakfast and dinner. The food served at evening meal time was mostly quite good with decent portions but if I were in the kitchen I'd add some more cream to some sauces, like the pepper sauce and the garden pea sauce, just to make them more luxurious and smooth, after all a little bit of luxury is lovely when your on holidays and I can't be doing with all this stuff about cutting out cream, butter, salt and so on; just enjoy this stuff in moderation. The breakfast selections too was good. The croissants were really moreish along with beautiful little mini French cheeses. Breakfast was mostly serve yourself except for kippers, boiled & poached eggs, with staff bringing coffee & tea. I'm not a big fan of sausage, bacon & eggs in hotels as most hotels - even more up market ones - buy battery hen eggs and low quality sausage and bacon, which usually are too high in cheap fat so I opted for kippers each morning which took 20 minutes to cook to order. I think that hotels are missing a trick by not using their buying power more effectively to buy free range eggs and better quality bacon & sausage meats and making a big deal out of it on their websites & menus. I guess they would get positive reactions from guests too particularly modern parents who are keen to ensure that their kids have better quality produce. I tried the porridge and being old school I added salt to taste which completely transformed the flavour. No wonder chefs say salt is the most important ingredient in cooking and again its sensible to take salt in moderation as just like fat the human body can't do without it. The steam & sauna rooms are first class as is the jacuzzi. The grandkids loved the pools too. All in all we were truly relaxed here and we've promised ourselves to return to relax some more and explore much more of what the road signs in the area call 'Amazing Grace' country. From the friendly greeting from Margrite and Peter, our hosts, to the ever so accommodating staff our stay here was the best of our trip. The accommodations were beyond comfortable with several areas to relax and take in the Atlantic views or sit in the evening by a quiet fireplace. The breakfasts included your choice of Full Irish, smoked mackerel over scrambled eggs or the fluffiest tastiest pancakes you'll ever have. Not to mention the scones, granola, yogurt and fresh fruit waiting for you each morning. We actually extended our stay another night and will definitely be returning on our next trip to Ireland.

We booked through hotel apps (and were later told by the owners that doing so avoids the 15% upcharge through Bookings.com) and had no issues with that service. We did have a little trouble finding the place, even with the use of a GPS (our Garmin with Ireland map didn't have the house listed in its database), but we came in along what must have been the back way, since we did notice signs for the house along the entry route once we got our bearings. Make sure you email or call the owners prior to visiting; they'll tell you the town to plug into your GPS that will bring you straight to the house. We were greeted with a quick check-in and shown to our lovely downstairs room with a large window that faced a stunning view of Lough Eske and the rolling Irish farmland that dominates the local terrain. The house has a large sheep pen in the back, and the owners were more than willing to let my wife (a huge fan of animals) visit their sheep and admire the scenery from the back yard. The house in very nicely furnished, and the en suite bedroom was very cozy. A comfortable, warm bed with thick sheets, comforter, and pillows with a nice wardrobe and relatively roomy shower and sink. Even the water pressure was excellent. Guests are treated to a fantastic breakfast each morning, with attentive service by Sean (one of the owners), who parades out with Mary's excellent cooking. The breakfast selection is good enough to suit even the most demanding palettes. The house is very conveniently located, too, with easy access to Donegal Town (about 4.5 km down the road) and is about 40 minutes south of Letterkenny. For those looking for a more refined dinner experience than what can be found in town, you'll be situated only ten minutes from the Solis Lough Eske Castle, which is a relatively high-end luxury resort. We had dinner there one night and drinks another night; the Ardeevin House was a perfect jumping off point. All told, we had a magnificent B&B experience at Ardeevin House, and it would get our very highest recommendation to anyone we know that might travel to that part of Ireland and would be looking for an ideal B&B experience. Mary and Sean are tip-top hosts and are as sweet and as kind as can be.
