I liked to stop at the oldest pub/bar in cities that I visit. The Haunch did not disappoint! I arrived a bit on the early side for lunch and the waitress took good care of me. I had an excellent view of the old church clocktower. The restaurant is clean and remarkably spacious for such an old building. It was bright and cheery. The bar downstairs felt cloistered but I only passed through. I had the Scotch egg and fish and chips, along with some local ales. I only had 2 days in England and I feel like I got the exact meal I had been anticipating. read more

This is a wonderful, interesting, and very old restaurant. It is large with several floors and rooms, and the oldest part supposedly dates to about 1320. It claims to be the oldest eatery in Salisbury. We had excellent food, including the mixed venison plate. They had a small selection of excellent cask ales and service was good. read more

Wow! What a find. I Bowhunt for venison in the USA and this was every bit as good as what I have killed back home. I also really liked their venison sausage. It was tasty and venison-y without being gamey. The servers were kind and efficient. The prices were a little elevated, but worth every penny. read more

Stopped here for late lunch. Our first time in Salisbury - so how could we not experience the oldest pub in the region? Dates back to 1320AD. The interior is Olde worlde (of course) cosy and fairly dark even on a sunny day. There is a pub and upstairs restaurants for people who are more ready for eating rather than just drinking! The staff were great - polite, helpful and good. I like my food hot - and theirs was all super hot which I like - easy to let your food cool down if necessary.... Mrs G had a venison casserole while I had a special - venison shepherds pie. The latter was not what I expected (shepherds pie comprises ground meat (usually lamb) topped with mashed potatoes) in that the venison was served in smallish chunks (good thing) and it was covered in a layer of molten cheese - rather like a good french onion soup. We both loved our lunches, the ciders we chose and I enjoyed my allele and rhubarb crumble with custard. Two thumbs up! read more

It always happens when you're not expecting to go anywhere in particular and you come across this place. If your heading to Stonehenge, make sure you make some time to check out the inside of this very old bar. Not very big inside but the pictures and art and old fixtures will have you with your jaw dropped open while you try to take everything in. My advice, order a pint of anything and sit back and relax. A pub chock full of stories! There was so much history to drink in while we also drank our summer lightening in the whores box, the little room at the front of the pub (where world leaders have sat). We had fish and chips a few times while in the UK, and this fish was the crispiest! Loved it so much! The pig cheeks were also very tasty, I just wish there was more pig cheeks in it. I wish I could rate their food or maybe I don't at this point. This place has the worst customer service. They are inconsiderate and lack any communication skills. They claim to have been closed for the past few weeks. I've tried to get a booking several times. Each time I submit my booking and then wait. No call or email. I call only to be told they are closed (yet someone is always there to answer the phone) and that my problem is that I submitted a booking online. Not sure why they are incapable of dealing with their own booking system. read more

My fiancee and I ate here after a super long day of walking about London and then driving out. A nice place with an old feel close to the center of town. It's famously known for having the remains of a hand on site. You enter from the street level, where it is a small pub. Go upstairs for the kitchen and dining tables. Magaret N. (fellow yelper) and I had Venison and Wild Boar as our main entrees. The wild boar was really excellent. I haven't had venison in a long time but it tasted pretty good to me. For dessert we ordered the crumble but got the apple cake which was pretty decent. The food came pretty fast, the service was OK, desert OK but I don't expect excellent of either in the UK (typical American sentiment there...) If you're in town and looking for some hearty dinner hit this place up. They also have salads and stuff, but why not go for the wild boar, venison or other steaks? read more

The upstairs dining room was quiet when i had dinner at 8:30pm (only one other couple). The venison stew with potatoes and carrots was suitable and the beer was decent. The Haunch of Venison is an old building dating back to C13. We turned up as they opened on a very wet February Sunday at midday. The front bar is small & suitably gloomy with a room off after a flight of stairs. A restaurant is above the bar & appeared to be busy by 1pm. The barmaid was young, attractive, was a student & loved working there. I can't remember what beer I drank but was fine. There are supposedly two ghosts: one being the Demented Whist Player who lost a hand (literally!) having been caught cheating. The mummified remains were discovered in the 19C but were stolen in 2004 to be returned soon afterwards. The 2nd was the Grey Lady. Definitely not a sexist ghost haunt! Worth a visit! read more

After an exhausting day of visiting Stonehenge and the Medieval Cathedrals of Salisbury we were told to pay a visit to this haunted establishment. This is said to be one of the oldest hostelry's here in Salisbury- and you can clearly see why upon entering this bar/restaurant. The walls with exposed beams, crooked black and white columns and oh the smell- just screams eerie. But, the history, character, and old charm, of this place outweighs it all. A group of us ordered fish and chips, tomato and basil pasta, and pea soup. All were pretty good, but I would have to say their mocha panna cotta was the best. This pub is from 1320. Just by that, I'm already convinced to go there. It's a very cozy pub with friendly staff and amazing food. They also have a restaurant upstairs. I ordered a quiche which was probably one of the best I ever had. And it paired up perfectly with the Hop Back beer on tap. read more

This place was absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I were wandering around town trying to find a place to eat and we stumbled upon this place. I thought the name was cool, and I love venison, so we gave it a shot. The food and service were amazing, and I can honestly say it was probably one of the best places I ate at in the U.K. I was expecting to pay a little extra for our meal (venison isn't something you see everywhere), but it was actually priced very well. What really made me want to give this place a review was how they treated my grandmother. When my boyfriend and I got back to our B&B we gave their business card to my family. My grandmother is wheelchair bound, and I didn't expect them to be able to accommodate her because it's a very old business and the building is pretty old as well (main dining is on the second floor and a bar is on the ground floor). They actually found a way to set my family up on the ground floor and we're just fantastic toward my family. If you're looking for a place with great food and excellent service I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. Completely made my visit and I'm recommending it to all my friends/family who are going to the area. read more

The pub is hundreds of years old and full of some very interesting history, reason enough to make a stop for a pint or two. However, the food was delicious. This place was really something. I stopped in on a trip around the southern UK in January and the proprietor was in. He gave me a grand tour of the place and shared some amazing stories of it's eight or nine hundred year history- hard to fathom, being from the states, where the word "old" is used to describe anything that isn't chrome-plated. I brought 7 other adults and 2 toddlers here for lunch during Salisbury Food Festival week. Although I booked weeks in advance the table was set for the adults only. The service was friendly and the waitress seemed efficient, but it took over 2 hours for the 2 course lunch to be served and 2 people had to leave before dessert as their parking ticket had run out. I got so fed up of waiting, I amost left too. The food was average and there seemed to be some problem with the bread as we had to ask twice and were then served cheap brown sliced bread not the fresh, granary bread listed in the menu. The main courses were disjointed and not well thought through. Passing this off as a 'tasting menu' doesn't excuse this - most tasting menus I've has were aimed at luring you back not a poor second to the usual menu! I had the venison- a stew and a sausage- with cabbage and bacon. The bacon was mostly flaccid white fat and the serving of cabbage too small. The stew had evidently been standing a while as all the sauce had sunk to the bottom. It was also far too peppery. The desserts looked appetising but had no flavour. I won't be coming here again - a dismal experience that we hoped would be an enjoyable family occasion. read more
