There are two TVs although we didn't use them. The TV in the bedroom didn't work. Shower is small for the size of the bathroom. It was possible but challenging to find plugs bedside for charging phones and such. There is also a lot of light that comes in from the skylights and can't be blocked. Light sleepers may find it hard to sleep after sunrise (5ish AM in May). Despite the skylights I found the room a little dark during the day. Not enough natural light for the size of the room. All this said the reason to consider this room is the rooftop deck space. The view from the roof is amazing. Great place to share morning coffee or an afternoon/evening wine or beer. Nighttime views are also amazing! Our second room was a more typical hotel room. Nothing special, but cozy and still nice. The building dates back about 700 years although most of what you see is more modern through countless renovations over the centuries. Still cool to be in a place with so much history! You can't beat the location of this hotel. You can walk to virtually everything in the old town of Salzburg and there must be 50 restaurants within 200 meters of this hotel. The hotel restaurant is good to stop in at least one. They will make a decent espresso in the morning or serve a nice meal for dinner. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Salzburg!

Staff were all excellent and the front desk agent who checked us in offered to call taxis, provided a map, upgraded our room for free, and made dinner reservations for us. He was very friendly and kind and we immediately felt at home. All requests were quickly handled and we had a lovely one-night stay here for my birthday! Would 1000% come back without hesitation.

The restaurant manager Mr. Richard and our waitress Nancy were amazing. Two of our party are gluten free and the made us gluten free bread and explained all the gluten free options. The gluten free bread came with homemade butter and two spreads (salmon and watercress with horseradish and a truffle pate with pickled vegetables). We had the rack of lamb with a white bean puree, tomato-concassée, and slow cooked onions in a Chianti reduction, a pan fried perch-pike with shiitake, pok choi, and carrots, a US ribeye with grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes, a boneless chicken with salsa criolla, lemon and olive oil, and mashed potatoes, and a white and green asparagus with ham, young potatoes, and hollandaise. It was one of the most tender ribeyes we've had, and the best lamb I've eaten - and I love cooking lamb. We had a bottle of Bründlmayer Brut Sekt Austria Reserve that complimented the meal perfectly. We ended the meal with an apple digestif that was the perfect end of the meal.

Our room was small but the bed was very comfortable and the shower room was spacious. The hotel is very historic with barrel ceilings in the restaurant and winding hallways to many of the rooms. Food was good but the stand out for me was the bread with pesto ("homemade herb paste"). We had the burratina to start and I had the char - I loved the white beans with thyme & lemon that came with the fish; I'll definitely look for other fish recipes that pair with beans. I am not sure what the tasty foam sauce it was drowned in was but at least my dish looked more appetizing than the onglet of veal that my colleague had, which looked like some poor animal had fallen from a great height and landed on his plate. :) Artistic plating to go with an artistic hotel I suppose.

Our room was not updated in any way, with dated paneling, basic sheet/duvet, the bathroom small, and the temperature control basically non-existent. There are a number of hotels in the area and I can't help but wonder if we should have chosen a different place to stay. I wish I had pulled up their website online when I was checking in and challenged them for putting us in a room that did not look like the photos. Also, we booked through Trip Advisor and reserved a king.....but on arrival were given two twin beds. While this was not the hotel's fault but they were not concerned with helping us to clarify the situation with Trip Advisor. On a positive note the location is just at the top of the main drag in the New Town, and the breakfast is included and was acceptable. If you have a car - they can give you a 15 Euro voucher to park in a garage two blocks away.

Obviously, read for yourself, they could to something, for instance return my money, they just do not want ... because what they want is, although you did not stay there, albeit you had to go to a different hotel and pay again extra, in spite of the fact they did not admittedly render the service as advertised, is to keep your money and run. Judge for yourself if this is right. But do yourself a favor, do not book this hotel. Dr Lukas M. Stahl, Esq. Dear Mr. Stahl, I am writing today in reference to your reservation for August 6th 2018 for 1 night in a family room here at the Altstadthotel Wolf-Dietrich. My colleague checked you into our family room No. 55 which is the category you booked via Expedia. The description in Expedia is to that category including the pictures. The room had the standard European double bed. Yes, it does not correspond with an American king size bed, here the wording on Expedia may be misleading, but the pictures for the family room clearly show the beding in the room. Nowhere is it advertised, that the hotel or its rooms are air-conditioned. The hotel is a private, family run hotel in an old historic building. We are constantly undertaking repair and upkeeping works to meet the four-star level. Of course, we are not a modern, standardized chain hotel but your opinion that the hotel is "run down" we cannot accept. We feel that we supplied the room and services you originally booked through Expedia. My colleague at the front desk did everything possible to assist you. Due to these facts we are unable to refund the prepaid room charge. With kind regards Jorg Scuhr
