But none have felt like home the way Hotel Goldener Hirsch does. The hospitality is exceptional. Warm, attentive and genuine. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel not just welcomed, but cared for. Our room was beautifully appointed, with a view overlooking the Pferdeschwemme. It was comfortable in that rare way that makes you want to unpack, settle in and stay a while. Breakfast service delivered to our room each morning allowed us to ease into the day with quiet and comfort. In the evenings, we found ourselves at the hotel bar both before and after dinner, drawn in by the atmosphere and the incredibly welcoming bartender. I wish I had gotten his name. His professionalism, beautiful cocktails and way of making everyone feel like a regular added a layer of warmth that made those evenings feel special. I'm going to return. Room itself is a decent size and I like that it has partial hardwood flooring, but the shower flooded half of the bathroom (after 5 minutes), there is no coffee/tea option in the room, the floor mats and curtains are dirty and damaged, and the walls are full of scuff marks. On the plus side the bed is comfortable and the window opens which is so nice. We paid about 400 Euros for our standard room which is definitely way too much for this hotel. Despite what they claim this is more of a 3 star property than a 5 star. Definitely won't return.

There are two TVs although we didn't use them. The TV in the bedroom didn't work. Shower is small for the size of the bathroom. It was possible but challenging to find plugs bedside for charging phones and such. There is also a lot of light that comes in from the skylights and can't be blocked. Light sleepers may find it hard to sleep after sunrise (5ish AM in May). Despite the skylights I found the room a little dark during the day. Not enough natural light for the size of the room. All this said the reason to consider this room is the rooftop deck space. The view from the roof is amazing. Great place to share morning coffee or an afternoon/evening wine or beer. Nighttime views are also amazing! Our second room was a more typical hotel room. Nothing special, but cozy and still nice. The building dates back about 700 years although most of what you see is more modern through countless renovations over the centuries. Still cool to be in a place with so much history! You can't beat the location of this hotel. You can walk to virtually everything in the old town of Salzburg and there must be 50 restaurants within 200 meters of this hotel. The hotel restaurant is good to stop in at least one. They will make a decent espresso in the morning or serve a nice meal for dinner. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Salzburg!

I wish I had pulled up their website online when I was checking in and challenged them for putting us in a room that did not look like the photos. Also, we booked through Trip Advisor and reserved a king.....but on arrival were given two twin beds. While this was not the hotel's fault but they were not concerned with helping us to clarify the situation with Trip Advisor. On a positive note the location is just at the top of the main drag in the New Town, and the breakfast is included and was acceptable. If you have a car - they can give you a 15 Euro voucher to park in a garage two blocks away.

Nowhere is it advertised, that the hotel or its rooms are air-conditioned. The hotel is a private, family run hotel in an old historic building. We are constantly undertaking repair and upkeeping works to meet the four-star level. Of course, we are not a modern, standardized chain hotel but your opinion that the hotel is "run down" we cannot accept. It's in an historic building and located near to where Mozart was born. Walking is easy as it's in a pedestrian zone in the center of the old town on the Sigmund Haffner Gasse. Just around the corner is the baroque old town, the festival hall and the gorgeous cathedral. They have a great breakfast buffet and your dog is allowed to stay with you for a 30 euro per night fee. The hotel restaurant has great reviews and it's a nice place to stop and to have a bite of authentic Tirol cuisine.
