While the Alte Pinakothek, located a block away, contains 'old' paintings, the Neue contains 18th…read moreand 19th century art. It's mainly European paintings, but some sculptures are scattered in small rooms and hallways throughout the building. While I didn't enjoy the art here as much as I liked the ones at the Alte (I just like old paintings more), the building here is easier to navigate and has a much brighter atmosphere. This museum has a easy layout, just follow the signs for the Tour and you'll get through the museum easily. Admission is 1 euro here for Sundays too.

The museum has a good collection of Andy Warhol's art....the building itself is very attractive, including the exterior. Lastly, the personnel: there was a nasty guard at the entrance to the galleries, but all of the other guards were very friendly. Also, the woman at the Information Desk was *incredibly* helpful: We'd sent an e-mail to a friend who was supposed to meet us in front of the museum at a certain time - but unbeknownst to us, the e-mail never got sent. We needed to contact our friend quickly when we discovered that problem, but it would have been a costly international call if we'd used our cell phone. The really nice woman at the Information Desk lent me her own cell phone and therefore I was able to call our friend.

This museum is so strange - it was free which is the only reason I'm giving two stars instead of…read moreone. But the whole time we were so confused on what the point of the museum was. The typically Munich exhibit made no sense and seemed a strange contrast to the Jewish exhibit across the plaza. I paid extra for the exhibit on art that the Nazis stole from Jews. Didn't pay for an audioguide as the English translations were pretty good in the sense that most displays did have translations. Mixed experience. To start let's be honest, you probably just came to see Nazi stuff (I know I did). The exhibit on Nazism in Munich was excellent. It was specific to Munich without essentially telling me why the Holocaust started, who the Nazis were, etc (basically what every standard museum on the topic discusses). I will give Germany credit that their city museums really do a good job at discussing that particular city's role in the worst, disgusting part of Germany's history. I read everything there. The exhibit on stolen on was fairly good as well.Part of it was a little dry, but toward the end of the exhibit, they gave bios of the Jewish families who had their art stolen and about their descendants (if any...). They also (this was sad to see them not actually discuss) didn't really talk about how the German government was making it very difficult for Jews to claim back art that was theirs or belonged to their family (similar to Woman in Gold which was in Austria...not much different). Something fascinating to know that this actual museum was a collaborator in Nazi Germany in the sense that they were on board with stealing art and worked alongside Nazis. The exhibit did not hide that. Locker room was clean and modern. Bathrooms were fairly clean as well. There were 2 gift shops. One was more like an antique shop, and the other had extremely overpriced fun souvenirs like dachshund notepads with them wearing lederhosen (came close to buying but couldn't see myself spending a lot of $ on a notepad lol...). The workers here were awful. I was told in an exhibit that didn't have a no photographs sign that I couldn't take photos so I said no problem and stopped. That guy (Indian guy I believe) kept following me throughout the exhibit as I was taking notes on my Ipad since photos were not allowed). I saw him later whisper to another worker something and sure enough they followed me a little bit too. When I was done at the museum, I went back to the lobby to check the time of my train on my phone. (Note they say that they have free WIFI but they don't have the password displayed so you do have to ask them for it). The woman working the register yelled at me no photos.THIS WAS IN THE LOBBY THERE WAS NOTHING TO BE DISPLAYED WHATSOEVER!!! The worst part is, I didn't take a photo as there was nothing to take a photo of. When she yelled at me I showed her that I was on the Bahn app. No apology....she just looked embarrassed. The Germans have a thing with photos...probably because they don't want evidence. In any event well worth a visit.

You do not have to enter the museum to visit it (even if you should since the Kunsthalle always has very interesting exhibitions). It's perfectly located for a pit stop during a shopping afternoon!

As a history major and frequent visitor at many ethnographical museums I was thoroughly impressed by MFK. Their collection is rich for a museum of it's size. It's definitely not the largest well known museum in the world, but they have a variety of items across Oceania, Africa, South America, North America, and Asia. What truly sets apart MFK from every other museum of its genre, and believe me I've been to too many, is their approach in displaying their collection in contrast to modern content. The museum has on display contemporary pieces of art and photography next to/with the ancient artifacts. In most cases the artists of the contemporary works are either from the region of the world that the ethnoligical objects are from or are descendents from those regions. This is soooooo UNIQUE. This is the main reason I'm giving this museum 5 stars because the concept of fusing the past and the present through art/artifacts that represent culture in an ethnological museum is quite revolutionary. Although the museum is in it's beginning stages of doing more work like this, it is quite inspiring to see that MFK truly desires to see not only different cultures but also the different eras come together to give their visitors a very wholistic glimpse at who we were/are as both separate and collective human societies. They also have a very nice cafe in their lobby for food and drinks. The price is pretty cheap for the general admission, especially compared to a lot of other European museums. Their exhibitions like the Buddha room are very well laid out in terms of colors, lighting, and content. Not all the rooms have English descriptions yet, hopefully they will have those in place soon. But overall very progressive and a recommended visit while you're in Munich!!

The organization of the collection is somewhat confusing - at least to me: there is e.g. a large collection of items from Oceania that ranges from the Philippines to New Zealand, and sometimes, the links between such different cultures seems forced. It is also a mystery to me why part of the collection of e.g. Islam culture or Africa is in one part of the building and an other is downstairs in another part of the building. In the end, it gives a messy impression which belies the richness of the collection. There are also some areas that they have to something about: they have e.g. some beautiful Buddhas from India, Myanmar and Thailand, but there is so little of it that it gets lost in the whole. I can only advise the people in charge to go and have a look at the museum of Asian cultures in Singapore which - with far less artifacts - leaves a better impression and gives far more background information.

It is comfortable to walk around, with lots of space to step back and appreciate the works. Definitely check it out.

I love sculptures and they have done a great job of putting things together really well. If you are an artist or photographer this is one place you have to visit in Munich. I could go back here again and again and admire all the sculptures and in particular, spend hours in the hall of faces as I call it. See my photos to get an idea about what type of exhibits are here. I find it hard to describe the feelings I have when, I am in the presence of such history and beautiful sculptures so, it is best that I leave it to your imagination and experience to see the place.
