It's bad enough to have Grace Lee who is the worst anchor in the state of Hawaii. Her dress attire looks so unprofessional and cheap. Now we have Jonathan Masaki who is also the worst traffic person in the world. Jonathan dresses like he's still in the 70's and he also is a wanna be local. Ka Uka Boulevard is not Mililani and he fakes knowing the streets of Oahu. His enunciations are the worst and he doesn't give you alternative routes if there's an accident like Jolani does. Why is Jonathan Masaki even on the air? Get somebody else who probably be cheaper. read more

HNN, or Honolulu News Now as their acronym reads in my mind, has gone downhill since my last review, especially with news coverage for islands outside of Oahu. While I still like the newscasters and reporters, the main reason for watching the news - information, is lacking. And for sports fans, they still don't have a dedicated sports team, so even less stories are reported. At times even Oahu stories go unreported or are days old news. One example was the closing of iconic diner, Like Like Drive Inn. Three or four days after the story broke on KITV news did they even announce it. News is news no matter how petty. But, what prompted this review update was for their recent coverage on Hurricane Douglas on Maui (7.26.20). I wasn't watching HNN but a family member was on another TV in our house. At around 2:00pm as the hurricane was way past Maui and nearing Oahu, according to another more accurate news organization, HNN kept reporting that "Maui braces for hurricane" and "Maui residents urged to take shelter". They even had an inaccurate radar map showing red radar images (heavy rain) of a humongous storm enveloping all of Maui county when in fact there was barely a drizzle at the time. Yes, it's better to be safe than sorry but faulty information is just sad. Said family member was totally confused as the reporting and actual weather didn't sync. I finally turned the channel to KHON and did her a big favor, lol. OVERALL: I have since changed my viewing habits with KITV at 6pm (only one-hour newscast in the state) and KHON at 10pm. I still watch HNN every now and then but only in the mornings as their Sunrise crew does a good job at recapping headlines. read more

Love to see local news. But I don't understand why HNN uses up about 15 minutes air time for weather. We got the best weather! No tornado's, no snow, not much stormy weather, surf and ocean yes yes but nothing serious happens. But, but, why keep repeating the weather report 3 times in 30 minutes. Why? I'm not talking about hurricanes or floods times. I'm talking about regular days. Ok HNN doesn't have many news reports but really why waste my time? Grace Lee is the worst anchor and her cackle is annoying. I also have seen her clear bias on multiple topics. It taints the news and makes the stations HNN controls unreliable for the news. I have also seen her yawn and show disrespect to guests and other reporters at times. Her insulting snide remarks are not professional. There are times she does her job decently and average like you'd expect like someone with her amount of experience (it seems like at least 30 years of experience) but it's the times that she lets herself go that it makes a lasting impact, in a negative way. I hope she goes takes a higher paying job somewhere else again. read more

Ever since the merge of the news operations of KGMB (CBS), KHNL (NBC), and KFVE way back in 2009, it has given viewers like me fewer options for getting local news in the islands. Still wondering whomever came up with the concept or name for Hawaii News Now. I've watched their newscasts over the years and particularly with their "Hawaii News Now Sunrise" newscast, I feel the quality of the news they provide seriously just isn't there. For instance, seems like there are more things about entertainment along with cellphone videos and Google Maps being used for their news. Also, it would be nice if the anchors introduced themselves at the start of each newscast or top/bottom of the hour. And some really weird camera angles during certain segments do not help much at all. Which is why I am more convinced that network owned-and-operated stations (O&Os) are way much better in terms of quality news. I'll tend to stick with KHON or KITV more often than KGMB, KHNL, and KFVE combined! read more

I am so angry! I called the station and the guy who answered was so patronizing! HPD made a wonderful video in honor of 9/11. It was God Bless The USA, but they added an awesome verse about Hawaii. Of course, they only played the beginning and left out the Hawaii verse!! The entire song was beautiful and should have been played. Sorry, need to chime in again (1/28/2021). QUESTION: Does Grace Lee get paid per cackle/ fake laugh??? From 430 am to 5 am, she does not laugh at all when presenting the news, when she is alone as the broadcaster. However, once the crew comes on board at 501 am, she starts laughing at everything, mostly when not called for, SO ira's in the morning time. The evening and night news cast is great to watch except Ben Gutierrez who chokes a lot because he forgets to breathe. The morning cast is decent except for Grace Lee's hideous constant cackling. Her laugh is so annoying and it happens often. Howard needs to smile and his delivery is like Seth Myers on SNL. Lastly can someone help Casey Lund go shopping for nicer local made aloha shirts not the tourist kind. I like him a lot but his shirts and new black suit with black tie on the weekend is like a mortician. Help him! read more

I have the Hawaii News Now app and will now have it removed. I have been using this app for my children's educational needs; however, I am repeatedly finding spelling and other grammatical errors. It often appears that the writer just doesn't care, or it's a 10 year old writing these stories. It is in almost all of their stories where I catch these careless and embarrassing errors. At first, I thought it was "spell check" or "grammar check" being used and making the errors. After finding repeated error and error after error, I now know that it's just a poor product that is being provided to the public. I also find many errors in their news that they broadcast. It appears that many of their stories are "half truths." They air their version and I later find out the true story. It's so sad to see what they will do just to air a story. I will stick with KHON news! At least their news is credible and mostly honest! I find it hard to believe that their CEO or some ranking official doesn't read all the errors in their spelling, grammar, and news stories. So sad!! I heard Kumon might help. read more

Unadulterated news is a dinosaur. The days of the redoubtable Walter Cronkite are gone forever. News and entertainment have merged. They have become an inextricable and indistinguishable creation. And how these so-called news entities manipulate stories and shamelessly plug the social, political, and economic agendas of their mastheads is indeed disconcerting. Modern media is not in operation to report the truth or to inform. Rather, the intent of a news agency is to satisfy its corporate shareholders by making as much profit as possible. This profit is realized by: (1) entertaining, (2) attracting advertising dollars by being entertaining, and (3) pandering to the baser instincts of readers and viewers which in turn attracts more readers and viewers. More readers and viewer equates to more advertising revenue and corporate profit. Since we live on an island there is limited choice and competition for high quality newspapers and news broadcasts. My favorite news publication is the "Molokai Advertiser-News" because it is consistently honest as hell. But if I am in the mood for entertainment, or a monkey in a pinstripe suit playing on an accordian, then Hawaii News Now is suitable for that purpose. read more

Actual news channel is good, but Talk Story Now is a disgrace - no substances. Talk Story Now is also inconsiderate towards guests. If you tell someone they are going to be interviewed, and they take their time to prepare and show up, have some decency to let the guest know if plans have changed and that they won't be interviewed after all. I watch the Sunrise service every morning and enjoy the various personality of the morning crew. Great way to start the morning. I especially enjoy the YouTube videos they feature. As I'm watching on my iPhone via Hawaii News Now app on my WiFi connection, there tends to be frequent signal breaks in the live stream video. The technology needs improvement to prevent these ongoing breaks and frame freeze. read more

Out of all the local stations, Hawaii News Now has the best coverage. I especially like Keoki Kerr's investigative reporting.
