DO NOT USE ROAM OVERLAND OUTFITTERS…read more Part 1 of 2: The owner, Jimmy, is perhaps the most arrogant business person I've ever dealt with. Examples (and I quote him): 1. "I just do this build stuff on the side. This is just a hobby. Where I really make my money is selling right-hand drive vehicles. That's how I make my money. The other stuff is just on the side". 2. "I've been doing this stuff since I was 14. I know what I'm doing." 3. He always does this little transparent salesman trick: "So how much do you want to pay"? Easy psychology... as if he's being super nice to you on the labor cost. Doesn't matter how you respond because the end cost is still what it would have been per labor hour cost. He's such a con. These are just a couple of the red flags that should have steered me away from this guy from the beginning. The story.... Five years ago when I bought my new 2020 TRD Off-Road Premium 4-Runner, I drove to his shop to just get some black-outs for my emblems. That went smoothly enough and I told him that I'd come back to discuss doing other things to my truck when it was paid off. Fast forward to current... I took my truck to Roam and had a conversation with Jimmy. I told him, as I did from the very first time we met, that I would likely just be adding more aggressive all-terrain tires when I needed new tires (and just stock 265/70/17) because I wasn't interested in a lift, mostly because my truck has KDSS. Jimmy, in his very convincing way, persuaded me to add a Westcott Preload Collar Lift and 33" (285/70/17) tires. I told him that I was very leery of doing this because of the KDSS but he assured me that it wouldn't interfere. He told me that it would level out the truck, even though I told him I liked the stock front of the truck down so that when I hitched up my boat, the truck and boat were then level (avoiding stern squat). His response; "Well how much do you pull your boat versus driving on the road?" -- Very manipulating sales tactic! I finally agreed to the build and dropped $1,300 for Falken Wildpeak 285/70/17 tires and $500 for the Westcott lift (truly just a spacer lift I would later learn). Before the build, I had a mysterious clunking sound either in my brakes or driveshaft that Courtesy Toyota could not diagnose so I left my truck with Jimmy for 4 days while I was in South Carolina. The last day of my trip, still not hearing back from him, and needing a vehicle for the work week coming up, I texted him late Friday asking for a report. He told me that he drove the vehicle but could not hear the clunking noise (even though Courtesy Toyota could at least hear the sound because they spent sufficient time driving it). So, he obviously did not give my truck enough attention. I asked him if he put it on the lift to take a look but he stopped texting back at that point. It was one of the most unprofessional and incompetent experiences of all that I've had with him. I return from SC and take the truck to Roam for the lift and new tires. When I pick up the truck, the tires are rubbing badly (even though he removed my front mud flaps). I returned the next day with the agreement that his tech (Addison) would resolve the rubbing issues. Addison was not there as planned, so Jimmy started the work. He cut out a significant portion of my front wheel well liners and when I left the tires still rubbed. Also, Addison broke my passenger side door LED light he was installing (but he was good enough to later come to my work to fix it. He is the ONLY good thing about this shop!!!) THE WORST PART - The truck drove horribly. 1. Tires still rubbing 2. Steering wheel wobbling (also could feel it in seat, floor, pedal). 3. Alignment was very off to the right (Jimmy claimed that was an inherent issue when doing lifts but that's BS as I've since learned through online 4Runner forums, other Toyota specialists, etc.). I told him that that I was through with it all and wanted the truck returned to stock suspension and tires. I asked him to switch out the 285s for 265s but he would not do it. He told me I would have to get new collars from Toyota as well since they were gone. After many back and forth text conversations (usually taking him until the end of the day to communicate back), I told him I was done working though his shop. I found another Toyota specialist in the area who from the very beginning was 100x more professional and spent a considerable amount of time with me on the phone discussing options. NEW PLAN - I sold the Wild Peak 33s (only 200 miles on them!) for $800 so I took a $500 hit on the tires. After doing a ton of research, I bought a set of Michelen Defender LTX MS/2 tires and had them installed at Discount Tire in Lakeland which was a refreshing experience after dealing with Jimmy's arrogance and lack of professionality for so long.
