Well, I can only comment on the service since their ineptness rendered it impossible for us to enjoy the food or experience the ambiance. As of eight hours ago, their Yelp hours indicated that they were open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today on a Saturday, and they had been updated two weeks ago. Today, we drove down from SF to check out this restaurant and ended up getting mired in traffic. Two hours after we left, we were getting close, and I checked their Yelp page and saw that they were open through 8:30 p.m.--with the hours having been updated two weeks ago. We had trouble finding the location (their signage is abysmal, literally tucked into a corner that you won't see when you're turning in from the main road), so I called and tried to ask for directions. "Can you help us with directions?" "No," the gentleman said. "Sorry, did you say you can't provide directions?" "No," he said. Uh... OK. We circled the lot and eventually found it anyway, tucked between a Subway and another nondescript store, and at this point we were starving. The doors were open, so we rolled in, at which point a few staff members who were sitting at the tables looked at us, unsmiling, and said one word: "Closed." "But I just called...?" I said. Couldn't he have mentioned that they were closed when I called? Maybe that's what he was trying to tell me when he said he couldn't provide directions; as you can guess, his English wasn't great. It was, shall we say, not the best experience. I called back later and suggested to that same gentleman that he update his store hours on Yelp. Eight hours later, by the time I went online to write this review, I'm pleased to report that he has. Hopefully, this spares future sushi aspirers the pain of fighting through abominable Bay Area traffic and circling a parking lot multiple times, searching in vein for a poorly placed sign, only to be greeted with a single stone-faced "Closed." read more

A hole in the wall, family owned shop that truly had the freshest tasting sushi. I stopped in on a Saturday night for dinner, was not too busy. The food was delicious. This place is an absolute gem! Visiting the area for a friends wedding and wanted to get something satisfying and fresh after a long drive. This place did not disappoint!! Such friendly, welcoming and attentive owners. Cozy space yet lively. Very clean. If we lived local, this would be our go- to spot. I was in the area and needed a quick meal so I stopped here after reading all the positive reviews. Usually, I get specialty rolls but I was craving a California and spicy Tuna. let me start off by saying, my wife is very picky when it comes to sushi/sashimi! we've been to many sushi/sashimi places include very high end ones. that said, we both agreed that the sashimi here is arguably the freshest/tastiest she's ever had here in the Bay Area!! inside the plaza where safeway/cvs/mcdonald are, most of their business is for take out i think... But don't be fooled by the location/look from outside or inside, i think they actually hired actual highly experienced japanese chef/cooks making the rolls/sashimi and they use the right ingredients. they use real sushi rice and the rolls are rightfully tightly made. Also, Even though I'm usually not a fan of Philly Rolls (since i don't believe cream cheese and sushi should go together), but my wife is so I ordered it anyway. it's THE BEST Philly Roll I've ever had, and i think it has something to do with the cream cheese they used, it's simply the best. the server (i think called "boss" base on my receipt) is one of the most enthusiastic, friendly, helpful server i've ever met! the 4.7 yelp rating is definitely legit, if not too low! if I have to nitpick, they didn't have the ankimo/Monk fish liver that i saw in another review. but even then, the server tried his best to make it happen, but confirmed by the kitchen that they have ran out. also the wasabi doesn't look the freshest, maybe from the freezer, but i'm not wasabi expert so can be easily ignored read more

It's a casual, hole in the wall kind of place located in the shopping center at the intersection of Highway 92 and Highway 1. I called in the order and drove over to pick it up not long after. We got a chirashi donburi ($28.95), chicken teriyaki ($15.50), a Rainbow Roll ($15.50), and an order of edamame ($5). The food was pretty good. Cozy hole in the wall sushi spot in Half Moon Bay. Saw that it was one of the highest rated in the area so decided to stop by after dinner on a weekend. Got seated immediately and the waitress took our order. Almost everything was really fresh and of very high quality. The one let down was the Shiro Maguro (White Tuna), also known as Albacore. It had been frozen and re-thawed, and you could taste the difference. They also have Escolar here (also known as Waloo, Walu or Butterfish), which is infamous for the gastric difficulties that it can cause when consumed in large quantities (greater than 6 oz). I won't go into details here but those who are curious can ask ChatGPT. It is quite delicious though and two pieces of Nigiri is a completely safe portion. Also, the monkfish liver appetizer was not as expected, it seemed as if the liver had been blended into a pate and then compressed into a sausage shape. However, I won't fault them for this as it seems like many other sushi restaurants do the same. Getting real, whole monkfish liver seems like something you should expect only of the highest-quality restaurants. They don't have the most expansive nigiri menu but definitely have all of the basics and then some. Strongly recommend to folks in Half Moon Bay craving sushi! read more

I didn't know the shopping center at the western end of 92 had a name. It's called Strawflower Village in case you were wondering. What a name. I'm not a local, and frankly it's a bit of a pain waiting for the traffic lights to come in and out of the parking lot. That's why I have to have a good reason to come here, and I think I've found one in this newish compact Japanese spot. I decided to make a takeout order as I was strolling the coastal trail. It only took about twenty minutes to prepare my order, and I timed it just right. This is a very friendly establishment. The ambiance is cozy and quaint. The owners did a very good job utilizing the limited space. It's in the Strawberry Shopping plaza. If you aren't local here you can completely miss it. The menu is fairly traditional to most sushi establishments, with honorable roll name mentions to the neighborhood that surrounds this place. The food and service has been consistent since they first opened earlier this year. Some of my favorites on the menu will have to be the bento box. I've had a variety of combos and haven't been disappointed with any of them. I'm VERY glad they have Saba as one of the options for fish since I'm not really a fan of salmon. I also recommend trying their appetizers too. I LOVE their Nori chips!! I mean, come on... who else is serving this? The sweet lady who takes the orders is also a gem. We stopped by this little casual shop for lunch and were pleasantly surprised that everything was great! We had a Bento Box with salmon terriyaki and california roll. The Salmon Terriyaki was tender, but the cuts were pretty small. You had to choose one item for list A and one from list B, and we did have to pay extra$1 to choose two items for list A which was a little silly to me They have plenty of specialty sushi and we chose the Bridge, which was amazing. I loved that they were willing to sub the shrimp tempura for fresh shrimp- it really made the whole sushi feel really fresh. We had a couple handrolls as well. I'm used to Unagi being pretty standard across the board, but this one seemed to be extra plump and we had to order a second! My friend and I got take out and placing the order online was super easy, but you do pay at the restaurant and there was no option for Apple Pay or to enter your CC number. We ordered takoyaki which I really liked, slightly crispy on the outside and soft inside, It could use a little more sauce on the top though. The albacore carpaccio was really good as well, the fish was fresh. The crazy monkey roll was ok, I like the cabrillo highway roll better, it had a nice kick and taste. Pricing is fair for the quality and quantity, especially since I've paid similar for much worse sushi. I would definitely say this place is worth it! We did have to wait a bit longer than average since it was an especially busy nice, but they threw in a free seaweed salad for the inconvenience, which was perfectly crunchy to enjoy with the rest of our dinner. It's been awhile since I visit HMB. I live in Belmont so this is a hop to this place in 20 minutes. I used to come down here every weekend when I was younger. Drive down to go to Montara Beach to go surfing was my thing back when I was 23 years old. Now with life happening. It's not as easy and life just kept on pushing me back. After driving through to go to Montara to get all my dogs out early before the crowds is nice. On my way back up HW1,I thought I should just go and get some coffee. I have not eaten anything so maybe this is a perfect timing for lunch too. My head was set towards rice but didn't know what's available around here. Almost passed this place when I have to walk back to the van. I just need a quick lunch and go since all my dogs are in the van. Right away I got a table since I got there when they just open. Excellent! So I ordered really quick. I got myself a nigiri plates with the chef's choice. Seven pieces of delicious fish. I almost didn't get the pictures. It was beautifully decorated with orchid and I got a Dragon roll. Also very delicious and fresh. One star off is because the rice is not as rich in flavor. You can not taste the vinegar which is most important for me. I had to run so I asked for a box. The waitress was so sweet and didn't seem to bother by my weird eat and go within 30 minutes time. We had: Kappa maki California poppers Pork gyoza Soft shell crab Chicken Yaki udon Chicken teriyaki Hot night roll It was ALL GOOD. The low point was maybe the soft shell crab but only barely. Wife didn't like the sauce that much. The gyoza were GORGEOUS. Best I've had in a LONG time. Beautifully thin skin with amazing filling.
