There is a lot to do on the state, whether it's clay shooting, fishing, taking a little boat out on the lake for a small tour, going on a hawk walk or horse ride, and more. The food is incredible across the board from breakfast, afternoon tea, dinner (both more formal and pub-style). I've stayed in a few different rooms at this point, and they have all been elegantly and luxuriously appointed, with every detail already thought out. We just got back from a week at Dromoland castle for my daughter's wedding. Our experience there…read moregreatly exceeded expectations. The wedding could not have gone better. The event space was beautiful. We were blown away by the food at dinner the evening before and at the wedding reception. Our friends are still talking about the risotto, beef Wellington and the fillet. It's rare to experience fine dining at an event, but that's exactly what was provided for us. Our family has traveled extensively. We can happily report that Dromoland is the best overall experience that we have ever had in a hotel. The castle and grounds are gorgeous and meticulously maintained. Most historic hotels have fusty guest rooms. Dromoland had modern, luxurious rooms with state of the art fittings. Everything in the rooms was great, but the beds and showers were world class. Our guests were raving about their accommodations. The common areas were fun to spend time in. The live music was a treat. The food at the castle is by far the best food we had in Ireland. It would hold its own against any fine dining establishment. The bride and groom had an amazing dinner in the Earl of Thomond restaurant. I had the best fish and chips of my life in the Gallery and was pleased to quaff my first pint of Guinness in Ireland at the cocktail bar. Breakfast was an event in itself. The food and service were amazing. We commandeered a large table and spent a couple of hours every morning with a rotating cast of family and friends. The excellent staff took it all in stride. The activities were great- my family was captivated by the falconry. Jane's hotel tour was a lot of fun. One friend played an enjoyable round of golf and our kids tried skeet shooting- all were very happy. Many of us had excursions organized by Dromoland. The drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. The thing that sets Dromoland apart from every other hotel that we have ever stayed at is the level of service. The staff are charming and amazingly helpful. They often anticipated our needs. The attention to detail was awesome. The rooms and common areas were meticulously clean. Turndown service was lovely. The housekeeping staff would even tidy up chargers and cords when they made their rounds. The wedding and our extended stay at Dromoland was a peak experience for our family and friends. We can't recommend the castle highly enough. We should have stayed a few more days just to relax.

My daughters also found a gorgeous route for their morning run. There is a spacious parking lot, which was not the case at most of the other hotels. Our room was light and spacious. The beds were very comfortable. Unfortunately, the water in the shower was unpredictable and it was usually cold with a blast of scalding hot water every now and then; however, this did seem to be a trend at most European hotels. When we checked in the kind lady at the reception desk spent time telling us about the hotel, things to see and do in the area, and showed us to our room. The breakfast room was comfortable and the food was good and filling. The service was very, very slow. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend my friends to stay as well.

We did book well…read morein advance so we got a brilliant deal at €145 per person for 3 B & Bs and one dinner - great rate for high season, first week of August! When you enter the main door, first impressions are that you've let yourself in for a 3 star rating or even less stay at this hotel. But don't be fooled by the need for a good upgrade, a lick of paint or even leveling some sloping floors! - it all adds to the charm of Hyland's and would probably be an entirely different place if it was modernised. The staff, while lacking in some managerial direction in times, were, on the whole really friendly and helpful and went out of their way to be as attentive as possible even during the peak busy times. Breakfast was amazing with a huge choice and absolutely tons of food - but certainly needed before heading off for a long days walk on the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and surrounding areas. Absolutely delicious freshly made brown bread - almost hot from the oven - all hot courses at breakfast were ordered and served by the waiting staff, while fresh fruit and cereals were on the self-service table. We had a truly excellent dinner on our first night, with a huge choice for each course and again large portions, but very nicely presented. Parking is available at a very narrow entrance just as you pass the front of the hotel on the left. WiFi is only available downstairs in the mainly lobby or bar area which is a bit of a nuisance. I would highly recommend this wonderful homely hotel which is right in the heart of the gorgeous village of Ballyvaughan - with lots of other nice pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and Cafes on its doorstep, not to mind the wonderful location as a hub for walking as I've already outlined above.

There was only one vending machine that was working and it wasn't fully stocked. The kitchen was closed. The late night desk clerk was nice enough to take us back to the employee vending machine just to get something to eat. I think it listed somewhere as a four-star hotel, but it didn't seem that it was actually four star and maybe more a three-star hotel but that might be the reason why they're updating and doing all the construction. They were doing quite a bit of construction which was badly needed to update the interior and exterior of this hotel. I was a little shocked at how outdated the room was regarding the fixtures and room treatments. It also smelled old and as if the dust settles often. I will say that the room was quite large but it was lacking in some of the main amenities that you would find in a more prestigious hotel. At the end of the day, it was an okay place just to rest for the night. The Wi-Fi was terrible and got worse the further down the hallway you got away from the central part of the hotel. We kept getting kicked off the Internet and maybe had one or two Wi-Fi bars sporadically throughout the evening. There aren't also a lot of places to eat around there and a lot of food delivery services don't deliver there either. It was nice to have free parking at least and like I said the night desk staff was really nice. The check out was easy as well.

The staff were excellent. The food was amazing. Everything really appeared to go like clock work. After dinner everyone went outside to chat and mingle the night away. The heatwave we were experiencing made it feel like the Mediterranean. After the reception room closed, we made our way to the hotel bar. Greeted by a very affable bartender, he was able to give a history of a few of the pelts and stuffed animals displayed in the room. He was a good laugh too. It's only fabulous, Castle Durrow. A great day and night was had by all.

The Bridge House is probably the biggest bar in Tullamore, and it certainly has the most prominent…read morelocation, so it was fairly natural that we decided to head in for our preparatory tipple on a recent first visit to the town. And we almost immediately regretted it. The bar felt very much like a hotel bar (which actually makes sense, as the Bridge House is a hotel): bit too open plan, carpeted floor and old people everywhere, all round over-polished feel and a consequent lack of ambiance. There was even a guitar-toting duo singing lacklustre covers in one corner, which was blasted around the pub at irritating levels. We were the only people under forty in the place, but occasionally groups of young people would wander in and then leave almost immediately, as if they were looking for somewhere else. Curious to find where this surely close by spot was, and eager to get out of this chintzy heck-hole, we finished our drinks and left. Easily the least atmospheric place I was in on my short sojourn in the town. As we were leaving, though, there was already a queue of people outside the nightclub next door, and this was before eleven o'clock! We made a collective mental note to check it out later, and headed up the town.
