Even on a very slow Monday, this place continues to have a certain charm. A bunch of friends and I wanted to kill some time so we ended up playing billiards here and had a great time. The menu is tough to navigate: for example, there are $2 off specialty cocktails on Mondays but when you pull up the menu via QR code, it is pretty difficult to find something with say tequila in it. I guess you just gotta know what you want. I am happy with the NA options and was surprised at the expanded THC options for the crowd that enjoys those. They even said they had one of 'em on draft. My friends and I spent a couple of hours here on Wednesday to watch the MLS all star game. We had struck out at several sports bars downtown who either weren't showing the game or refused to turn up volume on screens showing it...rude. So we were elated to walk through Haymaker's doors! There are 4 spaces to choose from to watch sports: the outdoor patio, the first indoor room w/ pool table, the big tables in the second room w/ the bar, and the high top section adjacent to the bar. Something for everyone! We chose the 3rd option, with 3 screens in front of us and amazing volume. I got the Mule, Hay-Mac and Cheese, and later a Green Tea Shot. The Mule came in its cute cup. The mac and cheese exceeded my expectations of a random sports bar, and the Green Tea Shot was one of the bigger one's I've been served. Haymaker is a cool spot to chill on the expansive patio during nice weather or catch a game inside. Wish their indoor seating options were a little more cush, but they are my size which is fun. I'm now envisioning my tall friends sitting on their short stools and can't wait to take them all there just for laughs...and drinks. I didn't try the food but my friend did and enjoyed it. Same for the drinks actually. I hear the espresso martini is great. And they have a pretty good selection of beer and some wine. I was drinking sparkling water and the Richard's rainwater bottles were perfect for me. Pool tables looked fun and were all full when I was there. I usually get a load of appetizers and sides here because they're just all that delicious - the crispy fried brussels sprouts, creamy spinach dip and rich poutine are all highlights. Unfortunately this means they sometimes run out, but the quick service and recommendations of substitutes make up for it! The Reuben sandwhich is also a highlight. You can find rotating beers from local names such as Zilker, Meanwhile, Eastciders, ect. on tap, as well as more traditional brews. The bread was fresh, the ingredients high quality, and everything came out quickly, which was ideal for a lunch meeting. The laid-back vibe kept things comfortable, but the food and service still made it feel like a step above your average lunch spot. Tried the poutine if it can even be called that. The fries were not the authentic thick fries and there was 3 large chunks of cheese instead of small cheese curds. I met my brother here before a basketball game at Moody Center. The weather was perfect for a nice lunch on their deck. Our waitress was friendly and several different crowds were enjoying sports. One group was watching the football (soccer) game and another group was inside watching American football. It's a great place for sports! I ordered a sangria which was $4 for a Sunday special. We tried the warm salsa -which was on the fall menu. At first, it had a great taste. Then you mostly tasted vinegar. I think warming it brought out too much of the vinegar taste. Maybe a bit of Mexican sour cream on top as the fat to balance the acid?? I got the French dip sandwich which was inedible. I took one bite and there was a bunch of fat. I took another bite and again...mostly fat. I took the sandwich apart to see if there was any redeeming pieces of meat but sadly, no. Even my brother noted how fatty it was. I don't know if it was just a bad cut but it was disappointing. :( I could have used more fries on my plate considering this is all I ate. Idk our waitress' name, but she was fine at first, I ordered a second beer, with my husband and brother in law. They got their beers but I didn't get mine. I was patient and waited only to never get it. She comes out to check out and I said... " I ordered a beer, so if it was charged, please take it off". She said my bad and offered a discount beer... fine I'll take it. I paid out, made a MINOR adjustment to my tip, like 1.00 ... if that. Used to love Haymaker, went for the USA vs Canada hockey game and they had to pause drink orders for 15 minutes due to the bar being backed up and then I ordered Poutine and 2 buddies got grilled chicken sandwiches, all 3 of us got ill during the night after eating there. Another buddy got a patty melt that he said was one of the worst he's ever had, over cooked patty, little to no sauce and the cheese wasn't melted. We arrived for one of the NBA playoff games and sat inside since the audio was on (music was playing on the front and back patio). Poor mistake as the audio was 5 seconds off so we would know ahead of time if a shot was made or missed before it even happened on our screen. Absolute worst way to watch a sports game. We decided to order a Guinness on draft which was absolutely terrible; tasted like they poured it out of a can although it was on draft. Terrible pour and tasted flat and old (for all my Guinness folks IYKYK). We were planning on ordering food since the menu looked great but were so turned off by the drinks and the audio for the game that we ended up drinking half the beer and leaving. Service was as mediocre as it gets - tried sparking up convo with our server and she gave us 1 word responses back. Great lunch on move-in weekend at UT. Went to try School House Pub across the street but were not open in spite of the hours on their website saying they were. Hopped across to Haymaker and just a great lunch for us. Staff super friendly with drinks and foods delivered quickly, despite being pretty busy. Tons of tvs, were dartd and games and a lively bar. Started with pretzel bites with horseradish mustard, excellent but the crispy Brussels sprouts with spicy sauce were awesome! Had some burgers and chicken sandwiches, all good with crispy fries. I got the roast beef sandwich and didn't really like it because it was dry and not very flavorful. I did enjoy the tots, and my boyfriend did enjoy his burger.
