It would probably get 5 stars if everything I had wasn't so salty. My friends (group of 10) ordered the Cowgirl special. $30 for 5 oz steak, salad, fries & choice of margarita/martini. They loved it. Downside, the orders were delivered at very different times, so some were waiting at least 10-15 minutes for their entree. Some of the people who had theirs waited for the others & then they had cold food. My appetizers were very tasty, but loaded with salt. Like ridiculous amount of salt. The place was packed. So I went during the day on a weekday so place was pretty empty. When you arrive, the hostess was very nice and got seated right away. Our waitress was very nice, but at times it was hard to find her. When we arrived, I started with a Tito's and soda, which took quite a while to get and apparently it's because the Bartender is not always behind the bar. We started with a chef's favorite four. The queso on it was good. It was just a little too thick and salty, the fried green tomatoes. I didn't enjoy cause I like that they were battered instead of breaded. The onion rings. I have to say they were good. I didn't mind that they were regular breading and the onion inside was a good amount, which is great. Lastly, it had elk tacos, which was actual elk meat. I thought it was just ground beef because that's what it tasted like and it was over seasoned and dry. I then got the bone and ribeye and asked for a medium when I first cut into it. It seemed fine, but as I continued to cut pieces off the steak, it was well done and dry. They overdid the pepper on it. It literally was the whole flavor. The green beans tasted fishy. I don't know if they had just finished cooking fish around them so I was not able to eat them. My friend got a chicken fajitas plate and the chicken tasted fake. It was like like eating plastic. I don't know how to explain it. It had chimichurri rice, which was dry and salty. Went to brunch here with my husband and we decided to do several apps and share an entree. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and sat quickly. The ambiance was very nice and loved the chandelier lights. For our apps we tried the following: - Fried green tomatoes, these were amazing they were fried perfectly and the green sauce they came with was very flavorful and helped balance out the dish. 5/5 for this one. - kolaches and queso, was my favorite appetizer that we got it was a jalapeño and cheese kolach. It wasn't spicy just flavorful and dipping it in that queso made for a 5 start app. - pork belly bites, cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. No complaints a 5/5 for this app. - Elk tacos, so these tacos the elf comes ground and in crispy taco shells, which would have been fine if they gave you more sauce or toppings to help combat the dryness of the other ingredients. So for this dish it was a 3/5. Flavor was fine but eating it without us having to use sauce and topping from our other dishes is why it gets a 3. For our entree we got the barbacoa chilaquiles. Haywire is probably the restaurant I visit most often in Austin, especially for happy hour! The happy hour deals are hard to beat! My go-to is the $7 frozen margarita, which is surprisingly strong while still being incredibly smooth and delicious. You also can't go wrong with the $7 chips and queso, which are always a great snack to share. The bar has a fun, lively atmosphere, and the service is consistently friendly and attentive. Even outside of happy hour, I keep coming back for the steak salad and the burger. Neither is on the happy hour menu, but they're both consistently delicious and never disappoint. The chicken fried steak was thick and tender. It had breading but the breading did not take over the entree. The mashed potatoes so nice and fluffy. The ribeye was perfectly cooked at medium rare and the asparagus was the perfect size. Our table was brought a wonderful croissant bread pudding! A treat for the taste buds! Again, I cannot say enough for Whitney. The ONLY complaint I have is there no sound buffering items on the walls or rugs. We truly had a hard time hearing each other and fully enjoy the birthday. My family and I went here today from Easter brunch. I will say we made a reservation and was taken care of as soon as we came in, however we were there about 40 to 45 minutes before our food was on the table. The food was good but room temperature and not really even warm. My daughter got a burger and the bun was soggy when it arrived. Makes you think it had been ready for a little while. I met a Yelp friend for dinner at Haywire as they were hosting their cowgirl dinner including Caesar salad, steak, house fries and a martini (lemon drop) for $30. Usually, food at Haywire is exceptionally good. Tonight, perhaps due to the mass production of the cowgirl dinner, the quality of the food was sub-optimal. The steak was rubbery and hard to eat (only ate one piece). The fries were cold when initially served and the replacement fries were not hot either. The Cesar salad served was not at all like the ceasar salad normally served at Haywire (lettuce was not fresh and crisp). Net, net, I ate very little of my food. I have decided at this stage of my life, if the food is not good, I will not force myself to eat it. The lemon drop martini was nicely prepared and enjoyable to drink. We also ordeedr the crab dip which was nicely prepared. Sergio, our server, occasionally came to our table to check on us, but not to the level that servers at Haywire normally do. Our server was training a new server and they did such a great job together. Attentive ,friendly, and knowledgeable. She recommended a Cabernet and it was so good! We started with the pita crab dip and I really liked it. Not fishy at all. Great mushroom and crab flavor. I was happy to learn that you can order side versions of the salads with your dinner. So I had the side house salad and it was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the honey dressing. I also ordered the metal Dinner. The the flavor was good but I don't think I will order it again. I like traditional metal and this was not it. The meatloaf was molded and looked like it came out of a TV dinner. Just my opinion. I did ask for ketchup because it comes with a verde. The special was a play on the viral "girl dinner" trend and Hayward's version is steak, mini caesar, fries and a lemon drop ($30) myself and two friends came tonight to catch up and enjoy what was supposed to be a good meal. Let's start with the good. This place is beautiful and very well decorated! Wonderful place for a date night or meeting friends. Now onto the food. To be honest it was awful. The steak was rubbery and didn't taste like real meat.. the fries were good but so are McDonald's fries. I would be concerned if even the fries weren't made well...The salad was not fresh. On top of that our waiter was rude. The lemon drop arrived to me less than half way full although it was good. I can see the potential, but it's so shameful that service was crummy and the food I tried tonight was lackluster. Southern with a Domain twist. Haywire feels like a fun, lowkey spot to grab drinks or a meal at while still being central to shops and other places in The Domain. Parking is easy to find with a small garage around the corner or the much larger red garage right down the street. We made a reservation for 4, which we were seated about 10-15 minutes late. The place was very packed and workers were moving quickly but being late for your reservation on the restaurant's fault is a ding for us. When we were seated we ordered quickly and our waitress was nice, giving us details about her growing up in Louisiana. We ordered the chicken fried steak with sides of brussel sprouts and creamy cajun corn and also a double cheeseburger with mac and cheese and onion rings. The chicken fried steak was good but the breading was very light, falling apart with every cut into it. The flavor was still very good though. The sides of creamy cajun corn and brussel sprouts were fantastic, popping with flavor and texture. The cheeseburger was also a hit, well balanced and savory. The mac and cheese and onion rings were similarly well received. We were brought out a special birthday dessert of whiskey bread pudding that was the hit of the night for everyone. It was moist and sugary, such a good way to end a savory meal. The only hiccup during service was one of our party members' burgers coming with the wrong toppings, which they corrected by quickly preparing a new one. Despite that, Haywire is one of the better dinner options in The Domain. From its atmosphere to food and service, it touches on all the things necessary to have a good time. Considering its look and location the prices are also fair and warrant a serious look for anyone looking for a higher end date night or dinner. Separate checks weren't available; the options were one card or up to four cards split evenly. The food was delicious and the service was great. The entryway was full of people trying to snag a table, but we were seated within two minutes. We were placed in a side room on the first floor, which had a different vibe from upstairs but was just as enjoyable. I really love how accessible this restaurant is, and the decor has a chic, cowboy feel that works well. Our waiter was friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable about the menu. He also recommended the Haywire Old Fashioned, made with a Texas-sized pour. It has specialty blended whiskeys, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters, and it did not disappoint. The menu offers a nice variety of options. We ordered the chef's favorite four again, and everyone loved it. Special shoutout to the elk tacos. I had planned to order the ribeye this time but then spotted a newer dish you don't see everywhere, the barbacoa stroganoff. I'm so glad I did because it was so good, no, great! We also ordered the chicken fried steak, though it came out as chicken fried chicken. We didn't say anything since it was still a solid entree. The low and slow chicken was another good choice. For dessert, we shared the whiskey bread pudding, which I love. We were there celebrating my birthday, and while the manager did stop by the table to wish me a happy birthday, there wasn't a complimentary dessert or extra. The biggest challenge of the night was parking. We went on a Saturday, and the Domain was extremely crowded. My husband dropped us off at the restaurant and had to park really far away. The Texas Farm Raised Redfish dish is the first entree that I've had there and I've been coming back for it ever since. I had a nice time with a group of ladies. Our server, Michelle, was very sweet and friendly. Our food came out promptly. We came for the Cowgirl dinner and I thought it was great. I ordered medium rare but it came out a little bit more rare BUT it tasted really good so I have no complaints about the food. The fries were also very good. The salad could use some attention though. It's a big restaurant with a parking garage next door. I was able to get a spot but you know, Domain, you may have to go to a different lot and walk. The only issue I had was the large table behind us were screeching at the top of their lungs. I think they were all drunk deaf and yelling and screeching. It gave me a headache and we left as soon as possible to get away from them so we had no time to talk and chat during our dessert or afterwards. We had to go outside. The only reason why I don't give them 5 stars is because we ordered 3 rounds of drinks and they were delayed in bro gong the drinks to us in 2 occasions. Love the ambiance and decor at Haywire! We went for Saturday brunch for our anniversary and it was delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly and gave us a few recommendations. Ordered an espresso martini and a blackberry whiskey drink. Both were good, nothing to write home about but solid drinks nonetheless. We were pleasantly surprised by the portions of our meal- especially for a restaurant in Austin. I appreciated that on the crab cake Benedict, the biscuit wasn't too heavy or thick so you could really taste the crab cake and didn't get full on a biscuit. Also came with yummy potatoes on the side. My husband ordered the barbacoa chilaquiles and could barely finish because there was so much! We will for sure come back and try the dinner menu and some other drinks! read more
