Okay. I don't normally like to leave one-star reviews, but here it goes. I called Headlines Salon to set up an appointment for a man's haircut. I asked for a consultation and a haircut by their best stylist. Now, I know that nearly all places like to think all their stylists are the best, but we all know that there's that one that outshines them all, so we settled on Jackie - the stylist who would cut my hair.
I normally get my haircuts on a weekend, but since Jackie was booked, I settled for a weekday appointment, which is something I rarely do. I waited three weeks from my last haircut at a barber shop; I wanted to try something new. In my mind, I figured that this place being a hair salon, they would have the collective experience to cut a man's hair. I mean, I've been to salons that cater to both men and women with a collective knowledge and satisfying experience of a five-star establishment. Would that be something that could be found in Saint Robert, MO? At this place? Sadly, NO.
Here's what happened: I arrived several minutes early for my appointment and either by design or poor time management, Jackie was busy. Oh, no! So who would cut my hair now, you ask? Yes, you guessed it, the new girl. Red flag! I freaked because I could tell she was nervous and quite new. I had to ask her her experience level to gauge whether I should stay or run out. Three years experience! OMG! If I wasn't such a nice guy I would have said no thank you and walked out - no, run the F out of that place screaming! But I decided to give three-year noob a chance.
I never asked the young lady's name, but I'm sure they'll all figure it out when they read this review. I asked why Jackie wasn't cutting my hair. The response I received was both awkward and alarming. The reason why Jackie and the other stylist don't cut men's hair is because they don't like to! (Red flag!) I asked why. Red flag ahead! Because they don't make much money cutting men's hair - the price they charge is too low. Are you freaking kidding me!? So you mean to tell me that because they don't make money cutting men's hair, they prefer to stick to cutting women's hair!? How complacent is that!? The whole experience was awkward and here I was willingly giving noob my hair to gain more experience. As she was cutting my hair, through the mirror I noticed one of the girls who was leaving looking at the back of my head. Her eyes got big and that's when I knew - the back was a mess. And it was.
Sadly, Jackie never got her chance to shine. Her loss. The haircut? Nothing to write home about. She needs more practice with a faded taper in the back. The experience? A $20 very awkward one. Things to improve? I hope they invest in themselves by attending the Paul Mitchell School or other reputable school. My last two stylists I went to before moving here attended Paul Mitchell and I got the best haircuts. If you don't make money cutting men's hair, then raise the price and rise up to the challenge of giving a great men's haircut. If you only stick to what you know then you'll become stagnant and never grow. As for my hair, it will grow and I will go back to my barber who may not have gone to Paul Mitchell, but knows his way around a faded taper. read more
