The Long Version: I love health food stores, so I had to check out Foodsmiths when we were in Perth. It's similar to Dandelion Foods in Almonte, and Natural Food Pantry or Kardish in Ottawa. Foodsmiths does seem to have more local items though and they have a formidable bakery section that the other stores I mentioned lack. They had tarts from Mrs. Garrett's Bake Shop (in Inverary, Ontario). As an aside, when I hear Mrs. Garrett, I will forever think of Charlotte Rae's character in "The Facts of Life." Lol. This clearly exposes me of being of a certain vintage ;) The regular prices of items that are easily found at other stores (e.g. Carbonaut, Made Good, Organic Meadow, etc.) are a tad higher than at the stores in Ottawa, but they have clearance sections and discounted items throughout the store. We were there at the end of January (2025) and I noticed a small Lunar New Year display with red lanterns, red parasols and a blue dragon. I was surprised to see that they sell sandals (!) They're all Birkenstock style sandals though, lol, the brands I saw were Finn Comfort, Haflinger, and Mephisto. I enjoyed poking around the store. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot. They…read morehave fresh groceries, meats, oils, vitamins, teas etc. They had coffee from St. Lawrence Valley Roasters which was on my list of local items to buy. Bonus to them for grinding it for me as well. They also had meats in a cooler for sale from nearby 8 O'Clock Ranch. The employees were very friendly and the inside space reminded me of an old pharmacy. They had plenty of people to help and overall I would recommend stopping here for fresh local grocery items or just to check their inventory out! Every town should have a store like this.

I had a set day to pickup and due to my chronic illness, had times where I needed to pickup the following day. The owner, Gilles, and I messaged and he told me it was no problem if I picked up the following day when I needed. To my utter shock, I recently walked in on said next day to pickup my product and was outraged to be met with incredible anger and verbal abuse. Gilles yelled at me as soon as I entered the store, and soon after threatened to break my jars so I could be taught a lesson claiming I have to pick up another day instead. He was not open to have a calm conversation whatsoever. Without any prior communication in changing the status quo, I was met with such hostility and told I should think, use my brain, and anticipate what he was going to decide next. I couldn't believe how awfully he spoke to me and attacked my person. A friend of mine also noted rising hostility with her and stopped going. Without any prior warning as to what changed. I will never go back and I would not recommend this place to anyone. No one deserves to be spoken to in this manner. Truly disappointed that a business owner would treat his customers this way.

The shop is filled with all unique kitchen gadgets, gourmet food items and just interesting things that make you want them for your household. My only complaint was not so much the store however but the fact it seemed that people were staring not so friendly at us. (sometimes the shop workers to but also the town itself) Not sure if it was an interracial couple thing or whatever but it did make our stay in the store shorter than I would of liked.
