The World Square Newsagent on Pitt Street, down near, you guessed it, World Square, is just your average newsagents, they sell chocolate and gum, soft drinks, water, stationary, birthday cards, newspapers and magazines. But more importantly, they also import a lot of magazines from overseas. Something a lot of news agencies don' t to do, perhaps for the expense or the lack of confidence they have that the magazine will sell, being that most magazines have a shelf life of one month before they're yesterdays news. I scoured many a newsagent in the inner west, the northern suburbs and the middle of the city, till I finally came across World Square Newsagents. I was looking for an American publication called Script, and no body had it. I was beginning to lose heart. I knew I'd seen it before, I knew it existed, but where? When I entered the shop I realised that they had many more imports as well, not just from America, but from other countries as well. Unfortunately though, there are still issues. I had hoped to get the latest issue of Script, due out in September, but the delivery was running late, this is an import issue and no fault of the Newsagents. Just a juicy bit of information that's not actually juicy and barely qualifies as information.

For those of us who treasure our weekends, that's a long time to wait especially when you've just gone in to get 1 quick item. Other than that, you have what must be one of the biggest sports stores around with absolutely everything that you could imagine available. The range of items is impressive and if you can't find it here its unlikely you'll find it anywhere. Service is pretty good too and apart from the long wait I was pretty impressed with the assistance I got when looking for a new tennis racket grip. This is quite a random thing to be looking for, yet the assistant was extremely knowledgeable about the different types of grips and really educated me. When I finally did choose one I was pretty confident that I had made the right choice and I haven't looked back.

An eye-drenching array of stalls provide anything a little vintage wannabe can desire, and catering for a range of budgets. The shopping's only half the fun. You can get your hair done like a 1940's pinup by the Lindy Charm School ladies, and marvel at their ability to stand all day in authentic high heels. There's talks, competitions, workshops and dance exhibitions. And best of all is watching the glamorous people go by. I'm still waiting to top the conversation I had at the last Melbourne show with Tsar Nicholas II. I kid you not, full regimentals, sculpted beard and all. The spitting image. Maybe Anastasia did get away and her offspring made it to Melbourne... So break out your plus fours, your spats and your snood. Well, maybe not all at the same time. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was that behind the counter were four very attractive women. The next thing I noticed was four very attractive woman behind the, oh wait, sorry, the next thing I noticed was the large amount of magazines in this sizeable inner city newsagent. They had a huge range, every topic under the sun one would think, except for humour magazines. But I was quite impressed with their literary section, as most newsagents don't tend to have any. I thought about getting a writing magazine, but it was squarely focused on writing in pros and creating novels, generating ideas and beating writers block, I'm more interested in screenplays, but unfortunately they had nothing for me, (I've already read the current issue of 'Creative Screenwriter and Script') But yes, I took note that they stocked them both. I will return for the magazines, and that's the only reason. The last thing I need is another restraining order, I mean a first restraining order.

But today I have an unpleasant experience…read more Usually the shop encourages customers to self measure whichever length of the chain as desired, cut it out and take it to the payment counter. Customers may also call for assistance if they are unable to cut the stainless steel chain with a normal scissor provided. Due to time constraints, I didn't want to bother any salesperson and quickly measure-and-cut a 1-meter chain. Abruptly a sales girl approached me with a skeptical look telling me to let her cut the chains. Then, she re-measured the one I had cut before, and wrote "1.03 meters" on the plastic bag. At that time, I was a bit upset but have no time to argue. Not because I need to pay for the 0.03meter that cost me not even 5 cents! It was the attitude of the salesperson that upset me. She should ask me whether I wanted 1 meter or accidentally cut a little too much and if so what she could do for me: either let her cut another one with the exactly 1 meter of chain, or sincerely and politely just tell me she will charge me for the extra $0.05, or may be won't charge me at all (in fact I never expect such generosity to blow my mind!). A good salesperson should be able to feel what the customers feel. Empathy and basic respect is a must. I always believe this shop owner is an understandable wonderful lady! However, from today's experience, I suggest the shop owner might as well prohibit any customer self-service that without requiring any interactions; Or carefully study their current customer behavior to make self-service the path of least resistance.
