I don't quite understand the high reviews of this place, especially when SF has so many options to choose from! I met up with a date for lunch. Got the Captain Crunch burrito, since it seemed really popular. It felt super dry and one-note. The hot sauce bottle helped, but barely. The coffee was also just okay. It felt good to have to complement the dry burrito I guess. I think what really turned me off was how we were rushed out of the restaurant! We weren't finished with our food yet, and the check already came. And like 10 minutes after we paid, the server came by and asked if we wanted to pack our order! We weren't even there for a full hour at that point. There were no parties waiting to be seated and the restaurant didn't close for another hour, so I don't know why they chose to act that way. Safe to say I am NOT recommending this spot to anyone I know and in fact am telling them to not go here. read more

We came here because this place is supposed to be very highly rated and I could definitely see why. The service was really good. Our waiter was really warm and friendly and was always nearby checking on us. The food also came out really fast as well, which was good because we were both catching flights that day. The food was definitely good. I will say some of the flavors were not my preference though. For example, I don't really like when my pancakes taste sweet. I prefer them to really not have a sweet taste at all before I add syrup and their pancakes were definitely noticeably sweet, which isn't my preference, but I'm sure plenty of people like them that way and they were definitely cooked very well. It's just not my preference. I also ordered the chorizo as one of my sides, which isn't a usual choice for me, but I wanted to try something different and just a heads up... It is very spicy. It almost tasted like there were literally habanero peppers blended inside the chorizo because it was hot and that kind of threw me off for a breakfast meal but again it wasn't bad at all. Definitely a hidden gem. Get the Heist platter or w/e it's called, it is incredible and worth the money!! Their espresso drinks are on point, their menu was formulated with a complete thought, and the art on their walls is gorgeous and gets you in breakfast mode. While the sidewalk space isn't very large, this was super casual and we ended up staying for almost 2 full hours as we talked through some work things after eating. I need to update my review. I've been coming here for years for their Captain Crunch burrito. It's one of if not the best breakfast burritos in SF! The eggs are cheesy, the chorizo is fresh and spicy, and the proportions are perfect. The portions are also very large. The cochata (horchata cold brew) is a must-have, but they have other specialty lattes too. I almost always get the captain crunch but recently tried the breakfast plate with sausage. Like their house made chorizo, the sausage was delicious, fresh, had unique spices, and was a large amount. Their eggs were buttery and creamy--why don't mine taste like that when I cook at home? Service is very nice and they handle crowds well. Expect a line and because of the location (near Union Square), expect tourists! Customers skew families, young people, tourists, and students. The hype around this place is actually real. On a weekend there's a high chance of a line to eat at Heist, and for good reason. Even though breakfast food can be pretty simple, Heist manages to take it to the next level. I think these were the fluffiest cheesy eggs I've had in my life. They manage to get the perfect crisp on their potatoes with a pillowy softness on the inside. And to top it all off, their spicy sauce is a must. I also got an iced mocha which was pretty refreshing on a warm sunny day. Perfect hangover food speaking from experience. The service was relatively quick especially considering how busy they are. I ordered the Captain Crunch burrito, and I'd rate it a 4/10. It was very basic -- just eggs, potatoes, and chorizo -- with none of the flavor punch I was expecting from all the hype. The name "Captain Crunch" also felt misleading, as there was zero crunch. Overall, it tasted like something anyone could make at home. My girlfriend got the Heist platter, which was better, earning a 7/10 overall. The French toast with berry compound butter was the standout at 8/10. The potatoes were decent but could have been crispier. The chicken sausage started strong but quickly became overly salty and spiced to the point it was hard to enjoy on its own. The eggs were just eggs -- nothing special.
