    ceviche tropical

The restaurant is located at the corner and is next to Patient First; it was hard to find at first but we made it! The place itself is cute and they were accommodating to our party of 8. The food was decent, but it didn't quite wow me. I ordered the Ceviche Tropical, but there wasn't much fish or shrimp. It was topped with a generous amount of diced pineapple and mango, which was refreshing, but I felt the fruit-to-seafood ratio was a bit off.. I also tried the charro beans (braised pinto beans with pork) but it was bland and watery. On the brighter side, we started with the wings and calamari, and both were enjoyable. The calamari was tender with a nice light crisp, and the wings were juicy with a tasty sauce that I really liked. The service was great, our server was nice and friendly. At the end of dinner, they brought out a small ice cream bowl and a sombrero with the serving staff gathering around to sing Happy Birthday to our birthday boy.

Was excited to try this new outpost of Helena's Mexican Restaurant (of Alexandria) in Falls Church. Being smack dab in a higher rent area made me expect slightly higher menu prices, and I was not wrong. That being said, finding value in a menu like this one can be challenging - but I'm happy to give it a shot! The Chips+Salsa (Complimentary) were a nice surprise. The tortilla chips were warm and evenly salted. The house salsa is a very mild, darker roasted pepper variety that is finely blended. A safe flavor profile with no discernible heat notes. I asked for their "hot" sauce which was perfect on my entrée (see photo). The ceviche menu looked interesting - there are 6 to choose from. Ordered the Ceviche Pescado ($15) and unfortunately it was too salty to be fairly reviewed. Next time I'll try a different one. In the meantime, keep this in mind. I was satisfied with the Steak+Chicken Combo Fajitas ($30). I was surprised when the waiter asked me how I would like my fajita steak temperature to be - I said "Medium?". Both proteins came out juicy and perfectly seasoned. My only critique of the steak: They sliced it with-the-grain (the wrong way), making it hard to chew and especially hard to bite off when wrapped up in a tortilla. It should be sliced against-the-grain. The bed of grilled onions simmered in the steak+chicken juices were my favorite. Next time I would ask for extra onions. How I WISH this dish were $20 instead of $30. At $20, it would be a once-a-week tradition for a lot of people. At $30, I don't really think of it as a high-rotation contender on my hypothetical eating-out playlist. $30 gets you AYCE sushi (which includes steak yakitori) a few blocks down the street... Some small notes: The water glasses at my table were never refilled - they remained empty for the 2nd half of the meal. The tables for two are quite small considering the number of plates one may expect in a normal dining experience here. There was a wadded up roll of butcher paper underneath one of the table support feet (to keep it from wobbling, I presume) which looked janky. Fix that right & for real - it's a brand new restaurant - do it right!

A WHOLE NEW FAMILY FEELING is the overwhelming impression from Helena's. We went to Cuates Grill for years and enjoyed it, and even though it's in the same place with much of the same layout, the Hernandez family has imbued something more in the experience. This restaurant is FAMILY owned and FAMILY run, and you can feel it. Everyone here gets along, and everyone cares! THE ATMOSPHERE was dominated by faces, all welcoming and offering to help. The ones that are busy are out of the way, and those that are free are lined up to greet you and offer help. There is traditional Mexican music playing, new table layouts and new booths. THE FOOD stands out immediately! They melted the cheese into the shells of their tacos, the guac was so chunky, the calimari was so tender and light, the ceviche was laid out like a large gourmet poké dish -- low in carbs, high in protein and veggies, not overcooked or too salty. THE SERVICE was multi-layered, so there were no dead spots during our time there, so not much waiting. Manager and owner each came by and listened carefully to our feedback. BOTTOM LINE: We were surprised at how nice this place was, and don't think of it at all in the same light as previously. THIS ORGANIZATION HAS DEPTH, and I hope they are here a long time. We will definitely be coming back!

Each order comes as one large deboned piece of meat, which is then cut into bite-sized pieces--easy to eat by hand or with a fork. They're available in a variety of flavors. I ordered them dry and got several sauces on the side to mix things up. Highly recommend. Seating - The restaurant has a surprising amount of seating. There's just as much indoor seating as there is outdoor, and possibly even more inside thanks to the bar and high-top tables. It's a great spot to start your night, end your night, or enjoy happy hour with friends after work. Service - For a bar, I thought the service was really good. Multiple waiters checked in on us, and we never had to wait for water or anything else. The recommendations they gave were great, and they stayed attentive throughout the night--even though it was moderately busy when we went. Pro tip: Be prepared to sit inside if you're hoping for a meaningful conversation--the street noise outside is quite loud. Between the main thoroughfare and the neighboring restaurants in the same alcove, it can get pretty noisy. If you value good conversation, you'll definitely want to opt for indoor seating. Pro tip: There isn't much parking in the area, so give yourself an extra 5-10 minutes when planning your visit.

The bar tender was very helpful and friendly and let us sample some of the options. The pineapple mango sour was ok, but more of a fruit cocktail than a beer. While a scramble sounds simple on paper, it is easy to overcook the vegetables. This one was executed perfectly, with every vegetable done just right. The thin-sliced potatoes were highly seasoned and stood out, moving away from the standard, heavy breakfast spuds you get at most places. The presentation across the board was excellent. The latte arrived with a nice touch--a small side cookie and a club soda to cleanse the palate, which shows a level of intentionality you don't always find. The staff members were incredibly friendly and gracious from start to finish. With fast Wi-Fi and a comfortable environment, it is an ideal spot to get some quality laptop time. It's a great addition to the local lineup.

We were told we could sit at the bar or outside, but when we asked for one of the open tables, we were denied because they were "reserved for parties of three." That just doesn't make sense. We're still paying customers, ready to order food and drinks. Denying service like that--especially with empty tables in plain sight--feels unnecessary and rigid. I even asked twice, hoping for a little flexibility, but the answer didn't change. I work in the service industry, and this is exactly the kind of situation where you make an exception or use some common sense. Instead, it felt like policy over hospitality. Really disappointing experience for a place I was excited to try.

It has become the definitive home base for several of my local groups, and for good reason. The "No Agenda - Just Coffee" Crowd Since October 2025, this has been the quarterly meeting point for a group I help organize (2 entire meetings so far!). We bring together a mix of IT-centric CxOs, startup founders, innovators, govtech, thought leaders, and industry insiders. The beauty of the space is that it handles the "no structure, no rules" vibe perfectly. We show up, grab pastries, and just hang out. It's a low-key break from the grind, and the staff handles the morning rush with impressive efficiency. The Sunday Morning Tactical Post-Game Every Sunday at 6:30am, Northside serves as the rally point for our F3 The Capital workout group. We split up--ruckers head one way, runners another--and we all converge back at the shop by 7:30am. There is nothing quite like hitting the patio after a solid session for coffee, tea, and a high-quality breakfast. The Menu and My Personal "Hack" I've been significantly more health-conscious this year, so I generally keep the order lean. My go-to is a standard drip or an Americano with exactly one pump of vanilla. If you are looking for a meal, the avocado toast and poached egg sandwiches are objectively excellent. However, if you want the best thing on the menu, order the cheddar chive scone and ask them to heat it in the oven. It is a game-changer. The Vibe It has a genuine neighborhood feel. You'll see a broad spectrum of people--from tech folks on laptops to workout groups and families. It even transitions into a great bar scene in the evenings. It's consistent, high-quality, and remains my top recommendation in Falls Church.
