They always seem to be having a great time and I just don't know how they ever get any work done! They do all the obvious Post Office services: stamps, letters, parcels, giros, passports etc, plus they have a lovely little gift shop with genuinely nice bits of jewellery, ornaments, fancy bags etc, plus all the usual cards and wrapping paper. The only bad thing is that because it is a small shop, and it has a lot of stock, sometimes the queue for tha actual post office counter can make it a bit crowded and sweaty. However, that does not detract from a really lovely community type of place.

Besides all the usual service you'd expect from any PO, this one also sells gifts, souvenirs and postcards. The staff are pleasant and helpful as well. Good customer service can put a spring in the step of an otherwise drab day. Nothing cheers you up like being faced with a complete stranger who goes over and above their job requirements to be kind and helpful, simply because they want to make your day that bit easier. I was on the receiving end of such service last week, when I visited the post office on St Vincent Street to send a hideously stressful parcel of very important documents halfway across the world by parcel force priority. I was served by a man called Colin who was helpful and knowledgeable way beyond the call of duty, even though it was near closing time on a Friday. He made the situation much less stressful as a result. So Colin, I wish to thank you for taking pride in your job. Not being able to post my parcel, or doing it incorrectly, would have resulted in disastrous consequences. You can go to bed at night knowing you really have made a difference.

There is a long promenade and a sandy beach at Kames Bay in the east and a shingle beach at Newtown Bay in the west. The beach becomes rockier toward the pier where you can take a ferry across to Largs on the mainland. The water was at last given an 'excellent' status for swimming in 2007. It is a popular beach for families and there are attractive gardens, grassy areas and shops close at hand. A very pleasant place to take a walk or start to cycle around the island (you can hire one from Mapes in the row of shops which border the middle of the bay)

It is well worth it as it really is a little time capsule and is so well loved and looked after by the stewards that their enthusiasm is infectuous. There is a real loom and spinning wheel which the stewards work for you (in period costume)and you are given the opportunity to try it out too. Nothing has changed in the cottage since the 1800s - furniture is all authentic. It really is remarkably well preserved. It is also very child friendly. Kids are given treasure trove sheets to go through as they walk around. It has a lovely garden at the back to sit in on a summer's day. A great day out for all the family.
