Overall: I want to rate it higher, but my experience didn't meet my expectations given the price. The good: The staff was friendly and accommodating, the beds were comfortable, and the overall vibe is welcoming. The not-so-good: First things first, there is a train very close by. They provide ear plugs, but that's still not ideal. It's not their fault, of course, but I didn't sleep well either night we were there. Super cool little complex. It looks like a group of like-minded makers & shakers with an idea born out of merging the mid-century rustic outdoors with modern society made something pretty damn unique, cool & funky in many right ways. A few thoughtful amenities are spread out between outside & inside and the gentleman on hand during my 2 days was quite pleasant & helpful. Just an original build (er, renovation) that caught my attention, yo! Parking is super decent for a reused old design, the rooms are charming with cozy flair and situated in a rather quieter part of town but walking distance to some good spots. I came by a few weeks ago and would definitely consider again down the road; especially in warmer times to check out the bon fire spot. 1 favorite unique thing is the chalk door! 2 minor feedback: watch your step at the unit entrance and I'd add a height clearance sign at the overhead driveway cover. read more

Cute retro motel that's been renovated in a modern way. Oh my goodness, the beds! Incredibly comfortable with buttery soft sheets. The staff was super friendly and the free coffee was great. We liked how you had an assigned parking spot right out front of your room. It's located between Columbia neighborhood and the Fountain District. Walking distance to a few food trucks and brews and a short drive to downtown. We loved Bellingham and we'd definitely stay at this boutique motel again. read more

The Heliotrope is a mixed bag. I'm going to try to be as fair as I can with this review, dear reader, and let you decide if you want to stay here. Pros: = Location is great in a residential neighborhood that is an easy drive to downtown and Fairhaven. = The hotel is cute and renovated to be mid-century modern. = You don't need keys to get into your room, you just punch in a code. = Room #2, Trillium, was spacious. = Staff were friendly and helpful. Cons: = We specifically chose the Flora Trillium room because it had a microwave, but it was broken. They didn't have any spares so the front desk staffer took his time to individually heat up the dinners we had brought from home (due to food sensitivities, I often travel with premade meals and eat out just once a day). A microwave was promised the next day but none showed up. The staffer ended up giving us theirs. = The bathroom floor was absolutely freezing--literally like walking on ice. = The shower had only lukewarm water and the water did not drain. The staffer cleaned our drain for us but the electrician could not come out to fix the water issue until Saturday, the day we were checking out, so we dealt with two days of unsatisfying (and extremely fast) showers. = Initially we were given a 10% discount for the microwave issue. Then when the shower issue happened the next day, it was upped to 15% off. Both times we had to ask for a discount. As you can see, there are pros for this place and there are cons. But the cons we experienced were deal breakers. We expect to have a working microwave when we pay extra for a room with a microwave. We expect being able to take a hot, not lukewarm, shower. The 15% off discount we were given was all right, but didn't satisfy us enough to make us want to come back. read more

It's interesting that they call it a hotel in the name because it's definitely a motel (parking spot for each room near/right in front of the room). Location-wise, it's not super close to Bellingham's downtown or Fairhaven areas (it's located in a more suburban area) so don't book here unless you're ready to rock your car nearly everywhere (you're choosing a motel for a reason, right?) There's a small grocery store across the street, and a good coffee shop / bar about 10-12 min walk away. Otherwise, this is in a suburban area. The room was clean and had the standard things you'd expect (except a hair-dryer, which maybe got taken by a guest and not noticed by staff in our case) and the room was spacious enough. It also has a sink/microwave in addition to an empty mini-fridge. The bed was super soft, and my partner developed some pains after sleeping on it two nights (we're used to a much stiffer bed). The bathroom is reasonable, but the curtain situation on the shower made it easy for water to start to flood out into the main bathroom floor if you don't pay attention. The front office had some beverages (local beer selection, etc) and they say they make coffee in the mornings (we didn't try). Staff were plenty friendly and quick to check-in and out. Overall, I'm not sure where all the high-star ratings are coming from. Comparing this to other places to stay, this is really on par with an Extended Stay/Staybridge style place with more "character". For the money, it's probably worth checking out other places. read more

I was on a work trip and had a super great experience. I had a little glitch in my t.v. and the attendant went above and beyond to fix it for me. Staff was incredible warm and authentic. I'm from Palm Springs so i love a mid-century motif. The room was spacious and the ammenities were just right. Walking distance to coffee shops, and a market across the street cinched the five star rating. Would definitely return. read more

10 out of 10. I originally was in WA for business but that ended and then I drove up to Bellingham to meet friends driving from Canada. I'm a nature girl so I wanted somewhere to stay where society is still heavily planted but so were birds, trees, nature. THIS PLACE. it actually came up as a deal on Booking.com and it was the last room. I'm so glad I did. It obv has a motel format but the owner for sure had it modernized so that it has modern hotel feels and thought of all the details- what you will see, what you'll smell, feel, everything. When you walk into your room, it immediately relaxes you with the fresh smells you intake, how clean and fresh everything is, the linens are fresh. The soaps and shampoos smell of lavender and everything fresh. The shower is all modern. The lobby and rooms are all really modern but very warm in color schemes. Lots of pillows. I loved waking up in the morning and having my coffee out in the communal outdoor seating area and soaking up the sun and hearing the birds. It was so peaceful. The neighborhood surrounding is so cute and I loved taking walks all around the area to explore. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Only suggestion is to put a microwave in each room. There is a mini fridge and I hate microwaves myself, I don't use them in everyday life and I do did not need one for this time but had I stayed here for a week or if I brought family, I would definitely not want to have to eat out everyday or just eat cold foods all week straight from the fridge. I didn't see a microwave in lobby, they may have had that but even still that is super inconvenient to go to the lobby to heat something up. So I suggest that strongly as I saw others complain about that. -That and for the lobby coffee, maybe have flavored creamer out as well. Great coffee and I improvised with adding a scoop of cocoa mix but just suggestion. Other than the 2 things above, serious 10 out of 10 and I will absolutely stay here again read more

Do you like the sound of train horns? If so, this is the place for you. Fortunately, the motel provides ear plugs. It's a cute place, pet friendly area, pretty clean with some carpet stains but definitely over priced! This place is great. I really enjoyed staying here. Not the fanciest place but it felt good. Facilities are clean and modern. Enjoyed the neighborhood and a pleasant mile long walk to old town. Staff is gracious and incredibly kind. We had to go to the Emergency Room the morning we where checking out and they moved things around to hold a room for us so that we could stay an extra day, not knowing if we'd be able to leave Bellingham or not. They even allowed us to leave our second vehicle for a few days while we worked out arrangements to pick it up. Best customer experience ever! This was such a cute place to stay. It was a Motel that had been renovated and they did an amazing job. Very modern. Pets are allowed. We brought our 5 month old pup with us. Amazingly the pets allowed room were very clean. They even provide you with a doggy bowl, #2 bags, and treats for your pup. We also we kids and they loved staying there as well. The staff was very helpful as well answered all our questions. We were looking for a step stool for our kids so they can reach the sink and they did their best to try to find us one. They ended up giving us a bucket to use and it did work. The cutest part was the door is a chalkboard door so the kids were able to keep busy. read more

Cute place, but still need to solidify hospitality. We arrived to wet carpet by fridge and sink, and were only offered rags to try and soak it up. We also discovered our shower didn't drain, saying they had old pipes. We do too at home and this was much worse. Still an inch of water when second shower was started. And the next morning, it was slippery from the soap residue and the water almost spilled out of the shower lip since there was so much. Housekeeping is only upon request, which we weren't aware of until we got back and the rags were still there on the floor and no sign of trash emptied with dirty diapers. We were told we could take our own trash out to dumpster in back and we can use bath towels for carpet dampness because "they've seen worse" - ew. That said, we came with a group of 3 other families and everyone else had a good stay so maybe we just got unlucky. It's not even the maintenance issues we mind so much (that happens) but more how they didn't seem to care OR how it felt like they were trying to hide that housekeeping was only upon request. Hope they can figure out the hospitality portion soon! read more

Loved everything about this hipsterized motor court motel! Rooms were simple but well-anointed with everything we needed. Awesome mcm design style! Location was central enough. (We had a fun evening at a beer garden down the road with a blue grass group playing and food trucks.) They even had a dog run for our pup. The free coffee was especially delicious!! Booked our second stay here for the RSVP (bike ride) overnight. We had none of the glitches of our first stay, and everything worked our great. From the location (near bike repair shops; near great places to eat; right on the ride route) to the nice size of the room this was an excellent spot. And this time we were farther away from the fire pit, having learned our lesson! In fact I'm not sure there even WAS a fire that night. read more

Our family group stayed at the Heliotrope for a wedding in Bellingham - our group ranged in age from 2 - 72 and everyone loved the Heliotrope. The staff is wonderful and caring, the rooms were well outfitted, clean and bright, and the common spaces provided the perfect for locations for us to settle in and catch up. The outdoor space, the Yard, has a lawn, Adirondack chairs and a fire pit and the indoor space, The Hub, has a fireplace, cozy couches, a work counter and beverage service. It's a lovely spot and we can't wait to visit again. read more

This was a great spot to stay. We had the office prep a French press for us and enjoyed coffee in the room while relaxing. Good hub close to all B ham offers. Hip and super clean which I loved! The higher the number your room, the more private. We stayed in #10- cedar. Picked it as is dog friendly, but left our dog behind. Still the room was great even though labeled a pup use room. Stayed here for a friends birthday; 4 gals visiting from Canada. I have to say it felt very homey. The highly personable service we received was awesome. I hope they let us back cause we really had fun! Huge shout out to Josh who chopped wood, made me a fire...and then my friends were too cold to sit outside. We had 2 joining rooms right outside reception and never lacked for anything. I fully support the individual biz over a chain any day and this place hit the mark. An uber downtown was around $12, little market across the street with great craft beer selection. It's is a residential hood though but we really loved it as a home base. I've already recommended it to work mates to 'support local'. Once our dollar improves I'd LOVE to visit and see more breweries. Due to it's lack of boutique hotels I never thought staying the night in Bham was an option. Now it is. Beds super comfy. Shower was big and powerful. Funky minimalist interiors. Wish a recycling container in the room though. read more

What a gem of a place! Heliotrope is such a pleasant and innovative business, which hits multiple home runs on location, comfort, style and price-point. The rooms are lovely: well-designed and exuding heart, soul and a great sense of aesthetic. The service is friendly, but not over-bearing. The location can't be beat-a lovely walk to downtown Bellingham, and a stone's throw from great neighbourhood coffee and breweries. This is what Bellingham needed: a fantastic alternative to the run of the mill Bellis Fair chains that dominate! The only thing that would make Heliotrope better is perhaps a fleet of bikes that guests could rent!! read more

Heliotrope could work on their guest hospitality. We experienced curtness while checking in. I gave the host my name, he incorrectly repeated my first name back, I corrected him and his response was ..." yeah, like we have two guest with that similar of a name ...". Then we asked at check-in if we could get housekeeping - response.."doubt that will happen, I'll put you on the list..." The sarcasm didn't feel very welcoming and we never got housekeeping service. Lastly, when we were asked by the hotel to provide feedback, we did - one week later, no response to our email. I guess negative guest interactions with employees and lack of services isn't a priority for hotel management. I will say we enjoyed the spacious and clean rooms and comfortable beds. Trains can be a bit noisy, but in general a quiet neighborhood location. read more
