Baretta is one of my favorite establishments in the city for two reasons: 1) the food is amazing…read moreand 2) their outdoor patio bar is a great place to mingle with young professionals in the city. Visit Baretta on a weekend night and be sure you're into the bar well before 10:00 as the line of 20 and 30-somethings extends down the block. If you're visiting for the restaurant and a little taste of Italy in Christchurch, be sure to make a booking a few days in advance. They DO have Entertainment Guide coupons! FOOD: My husband and I started with the grilled ciabatta with parsley pesto and olive jam. The bread was extremely filling, so I definitely recommend sharing with several people. The olive jam was my favorite spread, but the parsley pesto is light and bright and an interesting take on pesto. We decided to split the side salad with parmesan cheese on top and a light balsalmic dressing. It was a crisp salad with a lot of complementary tastes. I ordered the Chicken Leg as my main and it was cooked beautifully: juicy and tender. It was served with pickled pumpkins (which were very interesting) potatoes with ricotta and garnished with radishes. I cleaned the plate! I just wish there had been about one serving less of the pickled pumpkins. My husband ordered the Squid Ink Gnocchi with mussels and calamari. If you enjoy the smell of fish and seafood overload, this is the dish for you. My husband enjoyed it, but the smell was overwhelming for me (a non-fish eater). We opted to pair the meal with a bottle of Chandon, but their wine list is quite extensive and the waiter will be more than happy to offer pairing suggestions. In fact, the waiters at the restaurant are on top of their game. Never was a glass left empty nor were we left alone for too long (but not in a creepy hovering way). He seemed to have his eye on our table at all times which made the evening a breeze. Step outside before or after your meal to enjoy a cocktail from the patio bar. Often there is live music playing and heated tables to relax on. What's the catch for the place? Be prepared to hand over your first born child with the meal as it ain't cheap. But quality food and impeccable service comes with a price.

How pretty! I told the waitress to "bring me something sweet and white," for a wine, and that she did. There are two sizes of wine offered (see lines on your glass), and I chose the smaller one. I was brought riesling (see photo), which was light, sweet, and had a clean finish. It was just what I wanted! I give 3 stars because of the spaghetti carbonara. It was quite oily, and the balance of pasta vs the mushrooms and bacon was not correct. My bowl was still 1/3 full of the other stuff even though I'd finished the pasta. Furthermore, the top layer of parmesan melted and hardened, to the point of being inedible. If you're Italian, you may want to ask for no cheese on top since this isn't done in Italy (at least where I was in Rome, Florence, etc). I also ordered the side of salad greens. I wasn't told it came with dressing or what kind (normally don't eat dressing), so I was surprised to see a brown gravy-like substance on top. It turned out to be a balsamic vinegar based dressing, but be sure to specify if you're particular about dressing. I wouldn't mind coming here again but also wouldn't mind skipping this place next time. My whole meal cost $42, including the wine. On to the next!

Trust me we have eaten at quite a few places since we have been traveling. We ate outside and the manager couldn't get the heater to work so no heat. The Long Island Ice Tea didn't do the trick either!! I mean so people get heated up when drinking. It didn't happen for me at all. We were served our food and the waitstaff person did not even check on us. We had to chase her down for our dinner tab. My husband had the spaghetti and I had the ribs.

Five stars for what it is, which is not-fancy pizza, but it was done solidly and tasty!…read more Mister S proclaimed this the best pizza we've had in the southern hemisphere. We always find pizza a challenge when in AUS or NZ, outside Italian restaurants - it's often not executed well like soggy crust or has something weird going on like sweet or smoky sauce. This was great. Maybe because they import their ingredients ha ha! We had the garlic knots, sausage and meatball pizzas, and cheesecake. It was all good. The crust was appropriately chewy and crisp enough to not flop around, but soft enough to fold NY-style. The sausage was full of fennel, which I was thrilled by! It's sliced lengthwise into long ovals, not crumbled. The meatball was good, too, but I preferred the sausage. Flavorful (but not weird) sauce and really great cheese. It comes out of the oven ripping hot, so heed the advice on the table to let it cool a few minutes so you don't sacrifice the roof of your mouth. Pizza was available by-the-slice, half-pies, or full pies. We were 2.5 people and probably should have gone with a whole pie, even though they're huge. The cheesecake was also good - not too fluffy, but not too dense.

I love the dripping orange oil which sits on top of the slice of bliss that Mr sal provides in fact I have been seen to lick it off the cheese when thinking nobody's looking! My only dog with the pizza is the inconsistency. Sometimes you will receive a orgasm inducing slice of heaven over the counter from an aloof young gentleman with a sexy moustache however other times when you get an old slice it will be dry and not quite as good but Don't get me wrong it's still brill! I'm so passionate about this pizza that I have written short poem about it: Sals oh sals your just so yum, Not going to lie you make me cum! There's not much sexier than an oily slice It's just as beautiful as the northern lights! So good so tasty sals makes me wheeze I just love the dripping slice of cheese!
