One thing that you really need to know is that there is a big chance that they won't touch you. When I made my consultation appointment, I asked the admin "Is there any chance that they can't help me?" and she said "No, there is always a solution." However, they could not help me. In fact, my credit counsellor only have one piece of advice for me: "You could look at a consumer proposal with a bankruptcy trustee if you like..." Now, you might be thinking "She must be crazy in debt for them not to touch her!" Well, that's not the case. I recently fled a severely abusive relationship with nothing but my clothes and my puppy. Because of having to start over, I have an $8000 car loan and a $12,500 credit card bill (between 2 cards). I rent a small unit with my roommate who pays for half of everything (including my puppy!). Oh, I also work for a Psychologist and make $2400 a month plus a $1000 Christmas bonus. I'm not in dire straits, but I did need some help. What this company also doesn't advertise is that, in order to be accepted for this program, you have to cancel all your credit cards, switch to a new bank, and accept a forced credit rating of 7. What this company did for me was make my credit rating a 7, so that no new bank would touch me, and then cancelled all my credit cards. Once they had done all this and taken a $75 activation fee, they informed me that I was a lost cause and that I should declare bankruptcy. I now have a horrible credit rating, no bank, no credit card, and no one will will give me a loan or a credit card or bank account because of the new credit rating. I am officially worse off than when I started. Finally, my credit counsellor was awful. He was rude and uninformed and defensive. I had to go to his superior twice to complain that he was not answering my questions and being rude in his correspondence. When I asked him to clarify or explain, he just told me to "trust [him]." When he was confronted by his superior he wrote me a scathing email blaming me for not asking questions: "I am very straight forward and if there were things that you did not understand you should have pointed this out to me." Also, while they were working out all the details for my program, they told me to not make any payments on anything. They had the numbers and the contacts and they were now going to take care of everything. So, my collection notices came and went, and I didn't do anything, as instructed. However, now that they have decided not to take my case, my credit cards show missed payments. Great! So what am I to do now? No bank, no credit, no card, more debt... I can't believe that bankruptcy is my only answer. I also don't accept that a credit COUNSELLOR will only give me that one solution. What if a clinical counsellor said: "Yeah, you're really in a mess. You probably should just run away from everything" or "Well, I also don't see any other option than suicide." My mother once warned me against this company, and I should have listened to her.
