What a birthday meal…read more Having been advised by various friends and family that this was the place to have a celebratory meal, we headed to 60 Hope Street with high hopes, all of which were matched. Visiting on a Sunday evening, the service and atmosphere was very light any cheery, with no sense of being rushed at any point. We were sat by the window and presented with a bottle of champagne, ordered by my lovely parents, though the card ordered to go alongside didn't appear! It was poured straight away and kept chilled throughout the meal, with our glasses being topped up whenever required. Taking in our surroundings, we felt very much at home - it feels grand, but not in your face. Clean lines are the name of the game, much like the London Carriage Works attached to the Hope Street Hotel. Special, but not overfacing. We tucked into a 3 course Winter menu, with no sign of the dreaded meat and two veg Christmas meal that many restaurants end up relying on at this time of year. I started with scallops, perfectly cooked, followed by lamb. For dessert it was chocolate and cherry, presented with Happy Birthday in chocolate writing; I'm a sucker for the details. Upon leaving, all staff wished me a happy birthday and I left feeling very special and looked after. Well done 60 Hope Street, and keep up the great work. I'm sure I'll come again soon.

My first thoughts when I came across this place was.......Surely they could have thought up a name…read morefor this restaurant, no??? I mean come on.....how unoriginal can you get!!! "60 hope street??? Really???? Can you imagine if Alma de cuba was called "Seel street" or San Carlo's in manchester, "40 King street"???? Wasn't there a loved one, or something else the owner was fond of? Anywho, once you get past the name I mean what is in a name I suppose, the place is A-ok. With its Georgian entrance the restaurant, encompasses a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the decor is somewhat simplistic compared to other options in the area however the food rules the roast in my book in a restaurant, and here...just like the place itself, it is A-ok. The A la carte menu is accompanied by a daily changing special menu, an idea which I quite like. The food is cooked using local produce which is always a good sign and thus the menu changes with the seasons. Being near the water naturally you expect seafood and hey presto the menu offers a variety of fish dishes. If you have room left in the tank for a dessert and aren't too bothered about teh calories you can always go for teh signature dish 'Deep Fried Jam Sandwich with Carnation Milk Ice Cream'. I did, and must say it was niceeeeeeeeeeee oh yayyy.

Located on the first floor of the new Waterstones in Liverpool ONE, Illy Espressamente is a swanky coffee shop with an illuminated coffee bar, red leather swivel chairs and bar stools. If it was on the ground floor of the shop and visible from the street it would probably be rammed morning til night. As it's hidden away between the fiction section and the film and art however, it's usually blissfully quiet. Admittedly, I'd rather they served Union or Monmouth Coffee but what the hell, the Americana I had was still pretty good. The cincher for parents however, is there's a huge section for children around the corner. I'm not advocating anyone abandoning their offspring but in theory, you could leave them happily reading Charlie & Lola whilst you grab a quick pick-me-up in peace and quiet!

From what we learned, Moose is a small chain around the UK, and known for its hearty North American-inspired menu. Definitely true - the menu had plenty of US classics like benedicts, pancakes, waffles, and hash dishes. I was actually surprised by how many things were available, as the cafe itself wasn't all that big. Small enough even that we couldn't even get a seat inside! No problem at all though, as we were instead able to sit in their outside area which lined a cute cobblestone alley, adjacent to some shops. I've said it before, and I'll say it again for the typical American traveler... in England, do NOT expect service to be what you're used to. You'll certainly wait to be tended too, and the visits from a server are very limited. In no way do I mean this as a complaint, it's actually kind of nice to not feel rushed and practice patience :) All in all, the staff who did take care of us were very sweet! My husband had an americano and I enjoyed my flat white (I swear I've loved every coffee I've ever had during England trips). For food I got the lula puebla, which was a fancy avo toast. The smashed avocado was fresh and well-seasoned, and the toasted sourdough it was smeared across was so thick and delicious. Even more delicious was the chipotle chilli jam that came atop of it. It also had feta, chilli flakes, and two poached eggs. I was definitely a fan! My husband also really liked his eggs benedict that included griddled Serrano ham. I know, I know, travel all this way only to have a US-style breakfast but hey it did the trick! Wouldn't hesitate to pop in another Moose location in the future.
