The bar itself is pretty bog standard and the actual music / comedy venue is basically a little space within that bar, all on the one floor. It's an odd layout. The stage is lower than the ground level and therefore gives a "gallery" feel to the live events as people can huddle around and watch from above. I have not seen any comedy at this venue before but I have seen a few bands here. I'm not sure I like the way it's designed and the sound doesn't carry very well. It almost seems like what could be a totally perfect, awesome little pub is simply just trying to hard to be something it's not. If you are just wanting a quiet drink, you simply cannot do that because as soon as a band hits the stage, all are forced to listen and there's no getting away from the live music. Having said all this, the saving grace here is that The Good Ship's owner, John, is super friendly and accommodating and the rest of the bar staff follow suit. It's not the best place in the world to hang out and see a band but it wins extra brownie points for it's casual and relaxed vibe.

I mainly come here to watch The Smyths gigs where they play here twice a year, a summer and then a Christmas show. It's run by a really friendly, down to earth guy who loves his music and most nights they have a band playing, open mic or a comedy night on. Because of the layout of the stage you can pretty much get a good view from wherever you are, depending on how close to the action you want to get - down low on the stage level or upstairs on either of those two levels. There's some decent beer on draft and prices are reasonable too. The DJ that plays after The Smyths gigs who DJs here frequently plays all of my favourites....lots of 80s Indie, Britpop, New Wave, 60s etc but the only thing that slightly puts me off is because its open until 4am on the nights that we go you can get an odd group of clientele walking through the door after about 1am. Basically people falling through the door that are already smashed, they don't care where they are and they want to drink tequila through the eyeballs until they puke it out of their noses. They can be a little annoying falling all over the place but thankfully they are few and far between, apart from that this venue is pretty perfect for me.

As it turns out, this pub was converted from a 1920s art deco cinema. While it doesn't scream art deco, it does make it a good venue for live music and other acts. In fact there were posters for an upcoming Tina Turner tribute band. I was there on a very chilly weeknight, so it wasn't really hopping. Towards the front were patrons simply enjoying beers, watching football and playing snooker. There were menus offering Indian food, but neither I nor anyone else was eating. The barkeep was nice and the prices were good. I've given an extra star because I like how they pay homage to the building's past (and the neighborhood) with loads of old photos and informational posters around the room. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if in the neighborhood - check it out. Like Tina Turner said, "it's simply the best (on that particular block)."

This is the pub I mostly try to avoid having to visit in Hendon. The drinks are extortionately…read moreexpensive for the area (i.e. expect to pay over £5 per drink for spirits and mixers), and there are no cold soft drinks at all, they are all on shelves behind the bar, and the fridges are used only for alcoholic beverages. I had expected this to mean that a soft drink would be cheap, but it is not. You are served a mini bottle (less than half a pint) of warm coke and charged about £2 for it. The staff do not seem bothered about the nasty warmth of their drinks, I just got a shrug and a kind of "that's just how it is here" response. The food is probably the redeeming feature, being reasonably priced and tasty hearty fare, if a little bog-standard pub grub (but then it is a pub!). The only problem here is the seemingly random amount of time you wait for it. Sometimes the food comes quickly, and other times you find yourself asking what has happened, and after some embarrassment on the part of the staff, find that they have forgotten the large group of you all sitting there looking hungry. The interior is clean, well maintained and comfortable, with a large number of tables and chairs so you can sit down to eat. It is however very dark inside, not so much a problem at nights, but it seems very dark compared to outside during the day, making it a bit weird to eat lunch in. The pub shows sporting events on big screens, which are much larger than usual pub screens, though if you aren't there for the sports, you might want to avoid the pub on these occasions as it becomes very loud and crowded at these times, or you could sit outside and watch the world go by on the tables they have out on the street. Monday's they have just started to do an event based around guest speakers and showcasing hip hop music videos; choosing their favourites and showing them why. I love an event where you learn or simply have fun. So though it's not a place is typically hang out because of the crowded small space, the hip hop vibe it clearly favours is something I feel is always missing with London and I embrace when I find.
