We had a reservation on a Saturday at 6:30pm and got seated right away. Each dish was absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations. Don't worry if you don't eat spicy - a lot of the dishes aren't that spicy although they do look pretty red in the pictures. - Miao Sour Soup - fish filet: not spicy and the filets are boneless! Fish filet are super tender and I love the veggies in there as well (bean sprouts, broccoli, among others) - sautéed vegetables with garlic sauce: the veggies are so fresh and the sauce is cooked to perfection! If you like garlic, this is a must! - dragon style chili oil roasted duck: duck is super tender and comes with lots of different varieties of veggies! It's not super spicy but does have a kick! Portion is really good! - orange zest mung bean soup: highly recommend! It's super refreshing with tons of mung beans at the bottom. It's not overly sweet at all and perfect to go along with the rest of the dishes. There aren't a ton of tables inside but there's one or two bigger tables if you have a big party! Went to Hengry Restaurant in Alhambra for a friend's birthday. The food was great but what I loved even more was the eclectic dining area. They had comfy chairs, vibrant colors, and original artwork on the walls. The place was giving upscale cafe vibes. It's the kind of place where you can eat and lounge for a while. The dishes were on the pricer side, as far as Chinese food goes. There were some chef specials that were out of our price range. The staff are wonderful and attentive. Love the name of this restaurant - if you are Hangry, come to Hengry! They serve up traditional Guizhou - Miao style cuisine, which is quite different than the "regular" Chinese food that one would associate with. For one, they specialize in Miao hot spicy soup, which contains the unique Guizhou-Miao pepper oil with a citrusy aroma. Leo (the owner) and his staff were welcoming and friendly throughout our dining experience. Leo was happy to explain the menu/dishes to us. You order on this tablet at the table; ours had a problem where after we submitted the order, it erased, prompting us to have to resubmit our orders. Other than this minor issue, our overall experience here was fantastic. The ambiance was eclectic, yet comforting. I didn't really get the art work around the walls of the restaurant, but it still worked. As for the food, don't judge - we ate like pigs ... 1. Twice-cooked Pork (5/5) Pork belly that's twice cooked meaning the pork is 1st boiled to tenderize the meat, followed by a 2nd cooking in a wok to make the edges crispy. Well it sure was cooked to perfect crisp and tenderness while giving off a pleasant spicy-roasted flavor. 2. House-fried rice (5/5) Seriously one of the best fried rices I've had. It's very fragrant and peppery, but not too salty. It contains pork-bacon, Chinese sausage, black beans, egg, and green onion. Pairs well with the salted duck dish 3. Salted Duck (5/5) Salt marinated duck that is then boiled/simmered in hot water and finally chilled to give it that dry-aged meat flavor, but yet tenderness and melt-in-your mouth skin. It paired perfectly with the housemate sweet-fermented spicy sauce. Also goes well with the house fried rice. 4. Sichuan Beef and Tripe (5/5) The beef and tripe were fresh and had a good smokey, sichuan pepper oil flavor. The added fresh cilatro and green onions added a refreshing herby kick. 5. Egg Foo Young (5/5) The name of this dish was a bit misleading because egg foo young usually means egg pancake omelette. This is actually steamed egg. The egg was steamed to perfection and it was not "eggy". It is served in light soy with sesame oil sauce and garnished with green onions. 6. Spicy Fish Mint Salad (4/5) Chinese lettuce with a dressing that seemed to be a combination of fish sauce, chili oil, mint, garlic and cilantro. When it first came out, it actually smelled like marijuana (skunk smell), but that quickly dissipated and then you just smell the pleasant aroma of sesame oil. It's kind of a weird dish, but in my opinion, it's unique and still quite enjoyable. Overall, it's light, refreshing, and minty. 7. Miao Sour Soup with lamb (5/5) The lamb was not too gamey, but it was a bit tough, mainly because it's been cooking in the hot pot. Unlike beef, lamb meat gets tougher the longer it cooks. Fortunately, it is sliced very thin, so it is still relatively easy to eat. The soup base was one-of-a-kind amazing made from crushing Miao peppers. It's very citrusy, tangy, and surprisingly, not too spicy despite the intense visual redness of it. The chili oil broth is the good fragrant - aromatic spicy, not just pure heat. This chili oil is unique in that it has a lemongrass flavor that gives the soup flavor that's reminiscent of tom yum. 8. Fried Stuffed Eggplant with Shrimp Paste (4.5/5) Never thought egg plant and shrimp paste would ever go together, but they made it work. The egg plant batter was fried to a perfect crisp and you can taste the batter dough flavor, which I personally like. My bestie said "it's almost like eating a cookie with shrimp inside" - lol. The house-made sweet-tangy sauce paired well reminding me a bit of eating sweet and sour fried fish fillet. 9. Stir-fried Kidney and Liver with Pickled Chili (5/5) Personally, I am not a fan of eating organ meats, but my bestie who does, said it was "good-quality, fresh kidney and liver. The sauce was gingery and spicy." Pairs well with the house fried rice 10. Fried Tofu Balls (5/5) Each order comes with 4 tofu balls. If I'm remembering correctly, the regions distinct mountain peppers are pressed into an oil that provides (in my description) an intense almost citrusy flavor, as if Thai tom yum had a baby with Szechuan spice in a surprisingly refreshing yet hot and savory soup base. It results in an addictive flavor that I've honestly never had before! The decor and ambiance were fantastic as well and I appreciated the eclectic artworks strewn about the restaurant. It had a very strong lemongrass flavor. It looks spicy but it was not at all, as I think the red is from tomatoes. I've never had this combination of flavors before so it was definitely worth trying. The soup is served in a large metal dish with a flame keeping it hot. It's probably enough to serve 4 or 5 people. Potato Pancakes: An appetizer with 3 small potato pancakes which were crispy outside and kind of like mashed potatoes inside. Good. Came with a little bit of cabbage and chili powder. Scallion Pancake: I had thought this would be a different take than the usual but it was pretty standard, not a lot of flavor. I wanted to return to offer my patronage and support. I arrived at Hengry 15 minutes prior to closing. I got lucky and was able to still place an order. Upon entry, no one was at the hostess stand. A minute or so later, a staff member walked by and I asked him if I could place an order to-go. He asked me to wait and then he went inside the kitchen. Another young gentleman came out to take my order. He was the owner, Leo. He was pleasant and nice. I got a total of 3 dishes as shown below. Wait time was about 15 minutes or so which wasn't too bad. 1. Chinese Lettuce in Sesame Oil - Hands down the BEST vegetable dish ever! Very fresh and crunchy. It has a slight spicy kick to it especially with all the red chili peppers. Great portions. MUST GET EVERY TIME! 2. Stir-Fried Mixed Mushrooms with Red Pepper - Delicious with lots of different types of mushrooms. Flavor was on point! Good portions. Another MUST GET EVERY TIME! 3. A fantastic dining experience! There is free parking, which is always nice and they seat you within five minutes of your arrival. It was full of people when we got there but they get everyone in and out and you don't feel rushed at all. There were even people sitting at the bar that was super friendly and they were talking about their favorites. They were clearly regulars. I got a Sauvignon Blanc at the bar and it was a generous pour. They have an iPad for you to put in your order to send to the kitchen and I'm telling you be ready to eat when you hit send because the food comes out within five minutes one after the other. It was amazing and we had such a feast! We even peaked in the private room, which looks stunning and very intimate. We love the insight, art of the restaurant, the LED fireplace , and all the abstract statement pieces. The owner and the manager Mark are so nice and friendly. Mix veggie soup was my favorite as it had cauliflower, bok choy, and other mixed veggies. The broth was so tasty, and it was shareable amongst three other people. The cucumber smash was a 10 out of 10. It was so light and refreshing. I love the garlic pieces in the dish and it wasn't overpowering at all. I even had leftovers to take home. The potato scallion pancake came out very fresh. It is light and fluffy. Not a dense writing at all. I like the scallion flavor and eating it with my rice. The mushroom sour soup came highly recommended by the manager. It was pretty good. Especially if you like mushrooms. All the mushrooms were cooked well and the soup was tasty but I wish it was spicier. They do have spicy options, however so I make it that next time. It is huge and shareable for a whole table. It was a great balance with the egg and other mixed ingredients. Rice was cooked perfectly. The jumbo shrimp was just what the name says. It wasn't seasoned or had really any flavor just regular steam jumbo shrimp. He came to soy sauce with clothes with garlic in it, which she gave it the flavor and eat it. Still very juicy and well picked shrimp quality. Kung PAO chicken was not my favorite, but I love the nuts in the dish. It had these chili pieces in it. I think that was throwing the flavor off to me, but it has a lot of spices in it so if you like spices and dishes for you. The bell peppers were well cooked in this dish. My friends and I came by for lunch on Sat, we got seated right away since we made the reservation online. The owner was very polite and nice, he explained the concept of the restaurant and provided his suggestions for ordering. The decor of restaurant was nice but I gotta say the seats are just tad too low for the table? And since our table had group of 6, we could really use a lazy Susan on the table to rotate the food. Overall the dishes we ordered were good but I specifically ask for less salt on all of dishes but I think they were still too salty at the end, so next time I would probably ask to reduce the salt a bit more. Delicious, delightful, dutiful. The food was delicious. The ambience was delightful. The servers were dutiful. I was a bit skeptical with how well the service was going to be since we placed our own orders on a tablet. I was glad that the servers were still attentive throughout the evening (I only got Leo's name, but there was another person making sure our experience was positive). They continued to offer us drinks and frequent check ins with our group. The food came out quickly. We ordered one scallion pancake- it was crispy on the outside and had a good chew. The mapo tofu hit us with its umami & the Szechuan beef challenged my spice tolerance. Give this place a try before it goes viral! read more

The restaurants interior is really modern and has a very cool concept. You order everything through the iPad, so it's fast and efficient. The food arrived really quickly and the service was good too. It's giving, "want to be cool". We stopped by Hengry's for a birthday celebration because of the reviews on Yelp but I was lowkey disappointed. The restaurant has really loud EDM-like music playing outside that almost prevented me from stepping in...but I went in anyway. The inside is decorated with different chair designs to give that modern "hip cool and trendy" vibe but something was off about it. Now onto the food and service. You order by iPad which they did not tell us and I had to look up here on Yelp. There wasn't, however, an iPad at our table and no one came to our table after we seated ourselves so it took us forever to flag someone down / even look our way. We also got waters and a cup had lipstick stains on it and it took them forever to replace that water. For the food, we ordered a variety of dishes but I didn't find any of them to be memorable. The sour fish soup was very oily, the potatoes and pork was mainly just potatoes and the pork pieces were so small and fried that it just tasted crispy, and the eggplant shrimp and house friend rice were quite plain. While the century egg and cabbage were good, they weren't anything special, especially with the former just being the egg and some chili sauce. Also, we asked for more water and they poured one cup, ran out of water in bottle, and never came back. Overall, I wouldn't say it has "aromatic flavors in every bite"; I would say it's mid flavors that make you very thirsty after the meal. There are a lot of other places that pack that spice with delicious food. Service was also lacking until we were ready to pay the bill. I did notice their suggested tip is after tax if anyone pays attention to that. They do give out some coupons that are worth some $$$ but I don't think it's enough to bring me back. read more

We were at an art gallery at Cal State LA and wanted to find dinner. A quick Yelp search found Hengry. And lucky for us, what a gem it is! 6 of us were seated right away. We met Leo the owner and he told us about his dishes from China and how his Aunt chooses each piece of Chinese lettuce. We had: potato pancakes Garlic edamame Scallion pancake Chinese lettuce Sautéed vegetables with garlic sauce Cured pork belly with garlic Chicken & cabbage potstickers Pork potstickers Chicken fried rice Candied pork belly & sticky rice EVERYTHING was magical! The flavors were so different and good. The Chinese lettuce was superb! Candied pork with sticky rice was unexpectedly yummy. Inside had lots of art and fun vibes. And Leo offered us a dessert fruit plate after we told him how much we enjoyed his food. Thanks Leo & Hengry. It's our newest favorite place! I took my family here for my dad's birthday and I was not disappointed. From the great service to the food coming out fast, no other place bets Hengry! Simply just place your order on the iPad provided to you for each table. Just wished that there was modification option for spices levels. Some dishes were a little too salty for our taste buds since I had little kids and elderly with me. Other than that, they do have a good variety on their menu. There was plenty of parking at night but might be harder during the day because the lot is shared with apartments slot. On the outside they played good music. Inside and outside has a lot of blue lights, felt like a fancy club. Chairs were comfortable! Some of decors included cool looking artwork. I appreciated the staffs for being patience and allowing us to stay overtime so that my dad can blow his candles. read more

This place does NOT cut corners when it comes to making delicious food. Leo's vision and love for food (especially mushroom and pork), art, and pups can do no wrong in my eyes. There's INCREDIBLE options in both classic easy well known Chinese food as well new/special dishes you can't compare anywhere else. We ordered like 14 dishes- no joke- but everything came out spectacularly. (Disclaimer: I went here for Christmas Eve dinner and it was kinda chaotic - wait list and all with a big group of friends, only to be passed off by maybe more important people? So some might bump it down a star for that nuance, but when someone is committed to the art of making food for people and making it a "better than eating at your own house" - I am unable to suggest fault. My ONLY recommendation is the iPad electronic menu for one table is not ideal. I think ordering off your phone should be an option so we're not all hostaged in passing around one iPad.) read more

Came back again for lunch because Hengry is SOOOOO good. They made some upgrades as well since the last time I was here. I really like the loud speakers outside with cool music. Gives the place a groovy hip vibe. Also, parking lot has a sign now! So it is easy to find the entrance. Parking is shared with the motel parking lot. Also saw a sign that they were awarded restaurant of the week by city of Alhambra. Congrats! Walking from the parking lot, you're greeted by vibey upbeat music to set the mood which is same as inside. The seating is very homey and comfortable like you stepped into someone's house. Cool art decor and paintings everywhere. The owner is super nice and energetic. He designed the whole place himself. Definitely has a creative side to him. The menu consists of Guizhou food (recipes from his family), Sichuan food (chef is a highly awarded Sichuan cook from China), and Cantonese food which can be preordered ahead of time. Walking in, you can smell all the aromatics and flavorful spices coming from the kitchen. It immediately made me sooo hungry. It was soo aromatic, my nose felt like it grew tastebuds hahaha We ordered all of the owners favorite dishes this time, stir fried beef, beef and jalapeño, Chinese lettuce with sesame oil, lamb noodle soup, and crispy pork jowl with Sichuan peppercorns. Super bold, spicy, flavors packing huge punch. The Chinese lettuce is the perfect contrast to balance all the bold flavors and pairs perfectly with your meal. Definitely will be coming again soon. Parking is shared with a motel. The sign saids hotel but it's clearly a motel. Parking is limited so it's hard to find parking. I ended up parking in the residential street in the back. Don't park on Thursdays in residential you'll get towed. Also don't park at the coin operated lot next to it because you'll get towed. 2 stars Ambience: small cute trendy place with a small bar. It has music and decorative art with modern lounge chairs. 5 stars Food: Everything we ordered was really good. Weordered a lot and each dish was good. 5 stars Service: Went Saturday 6:30pm, so not quite really busy yet. This is not a kid friendly location. No booster or anything was offered. There's 4 waitstaff for the small place which should be enough to service but it was quite chaotic. Requested for a fork, it never came. Requested for water, takes a long time. Food, although amazing, also takes a long time. Didn't leave the restaurant until closer to 8:30. I wasn't expecting dinner to last more than 1 or 1.5 hours as most asian places I could order, eat and be done in that time. 3 stars Maybe try a week day and not a weekend so maybe the service would better and faster. read more

On June 2, I reserved a table for 6 through OpenTable. But when I arrived at 6 PM, the door was closed. Turns out, this restaurant does not open on Mondays. Please work with OpenTable to prevent further misunderstandings. Actually, I had dined at this restaurant just about a week before June 2, the day of the mistaken reservation. Let me share my impressions of the place and the food. We chose this restaurant because my friend found out they serve Fish Mint (折耳根). But once we were seated, the owner told us they would not have Fish Mint in the near future. We went there for Fish Mint, but they did not have it, so minus one star. Then again, Fish Mint has a very weird taste. Some people love it, but I personally hate it and would never try it again. So let's add that star back. The renovation of the restaurant surprised me. It does not look like a typical Chinese restaurant at all. With abstract and modern paintings on the walls, bright colored sofas, and brick shaped decorations, it felt more like a Western style brunch spot in Shanghai. Let's talk about the food: Crispy Pork 酥肉 5/5 Much better than the precooked ones you find at hot pot places. Clearly made to order. Crispy and tender. Well done. Miao Sour Soup - Bullfrogs 苗家酸湯牛蛙 3/5 The flavor was spot on, classic Miao style sour soup in both taste and aroma. The downside: the bullfrog meat was too tough and chewy. It got stuck between my teeth. Cured Pork Belly with Garlic Sprouts 蒜苗炒臘肉 4/5 Quite good, especially the cured pork. It was very well prepared. Sichuan Peppercorn Beef Tongue 牛舌 2/5 Portion was too small. All the beef tongue pieces were floating on top, nothing underneath the soup. Also too tough. Not recommended. Spicy Fish & Pork Intestine 肥腸魚 4/5 Not bad. The fish was from a pre marinated package, which I am personally fine with. The fish was tender, and the intestine was soft and well seasoned. A solid dish. I probably will not return unless some friends invite me again. I am not saying it is a bad restaurant. On the contrary, it was actually quite memorable. Amazing authentic Guizhou food. Great service and very cool atmosphere. The owner is an art collect and has some very interesting art throughout the restaurant. Prices are very expensive, but worth it because it's really hard to find authentic Guizhou food in the US. read more

The parking was odd, I parked around the corner near the motel. There weren't enough parking, but I was lucky to at least find one. The food was really good. It has very good flavors, although the price is a little on the high side. The portion was large so I guess that's a good thing. The service was excellent, we actually sat on a sofa/couch for our dinner. The setting is great for family or couples depending on your occasion. Will be back to taste other dishes. read more

Huge applause to the team at Hengry for introducing us to Guizhou regional cuisine--a lesser-known culinary style that left a lasting impression and has us eager to return for more. Our wonderful event organizer had been scouting restaurants that pair well with wine, and Hengry's management communicated to curate a custom set menu, including off-menu items sourced by the chef himself that very morning to ensure the freshest seafood possible. Despite it being a fairly busy weekend, the service remained exceptional throughout our nearly six-hour gathering. Midway through the meal, the chef personally came out to greet our group. When we offered him a glass of our boutique wine, he graciously declined, noting that he was still on duty--a testament to his professionalism. The manager, Mark, shared that the chef has won top culinary honors in his home country. With a small, focused kitchen team, it's clear that quality is their priority. The meticulous knife skills displayed in both the preparation and plating of each dish were especially impressive. The restaurant's decor adds to the experience, with art pieces that radiate a positive energy. Some of the artwork holds personal significance to the staff, creating a warm, human connection between guests and the team behind the scenes. Initially, I was concerned that the spice level might overpower our light-bodied wines. Fortunately, the heat was balanced perfectly, enhancing rather than competing with the wine. While a few dishes did contain raw diced garlic--which I personally chose to avoid--there were plenty of options that catered to a range of palates. My top three standout dishes were: Steamed Marble Goby Fish (a special off-menu item) - Delicate, fresh, and expertly prepared. Potato Cake - Reminiscent of a hash brown with side of Asian spices, flavorful and satisfying. Mapo Tofu with Abalone - A creative twist on a classic dish, the tenderness of abalone was cooked (or roasted) to perfection. The Sour Soup was a crowd favorite--and I completely agree. It's an absolute must-try. Thank you to the entire Hengry team for delivering such a thoughtful and elevated dining experience.
