I've never met anyone with more enthusiasm for all things mehndi than Henna by Heather! Each session I've had with her has been delightful. That would be four at this point, but here I will expand upon my favorite one - where in a flash of inspiration I got it in my head that some stylish henna would be the perfect accessory for a formal dance party I was planning on attending! After a quick e-mail exchange explaining my idea ("Edward Gorey inspired henna sleeves and cuffs please!") we made an appointment to meet at her lovely studio as soon as possible. Fortunately we were able to squeeze me in for a little over an hour between our busy schedules and what a magical experience it was! Normally I would want to take these things calmly but time was tight and the idea was too hilarious not to try - Heather took about 10 minutes to whip up a character and pattern/fill theme from the Gorey elements I liked the most (all ear-marked in a book I brought) and free styled these amazing non-traditional henna gloves for me in about an hour or so! Her flexibility, open-minded creativity and deep knowledge of henna are inspiring, and she is a joy to work with. Not only is Heather a dazzlingly talented and professional body artist, she also shares her passion by encouraging everybody who is interested in honing their own henna skills. We had a bday henna party about a week ago, and Heather was our henna artist for the evening. She came to my home in Somerville without any problems. What a great night we all had! Heather was so professional and artistic--adapting different henna designs to each woman's personality and style--she listened to what we wanted as a design, incorporated that as needed with a "template" we had picked from her design book or off her website, and away she went, with her magic henna pen! I had my palms and lower arms done; it looks magnificent (flowers and vines and a snake incorporated too!) People have been commenting on it all week as I go about my daily routines. Many others got anklets, necklaces around the front or back of their necks/backs, shoulder designs, feet designs, etc. Each design elicited many "ooh's" and "ahhs" from the crowd. Everyone raved about the party and about Heather; she was so friendly and down to earth, and made everyone feel welcome. We took plenty of pictures of everyone's designs. We are already talking about when our next henna party will be (we're hoping in July or August!) A successful evening with a great henna artist--Heather rocked our world! Heather is a gifted artist and truly a master of henna work. She recently created henna stains on both of my arms/hands in memory of my father, who died last year. She took the time to talk with me about my father and translated what she learned about him and our relationship into pieces that perfectly memorialized him. She applied the henna on his birthday, then photographed it two days later, on the first anniversary of his death. I brought my mother with me and she created two beautiful designs on her arms, as well - a tiger and an angel (their nicknames for one another) and photographed her, as well. I am eternally grateful and the experience was not only a beautiful way to memorialize my father, but was also a lovely experience shared with my mother. I have had the opportunity to either have henna art done by Heather, or see it done on someone else by her many times over the past three years, and her artistry never ceases to amaze me. Whether it is a simple design for a newbie at a party or faire, to a more detailed traditional design for a formal event, Heather's artistic talent and and knowledge base have always intrigued and never disappointed. As a Middle Eastern dancer who also occasionally crosses over to American Tribal Style, I appreciate her versatility to stay true to tradition in some instances, as well as her artistic flexibility to create from her own imagination when I am looking for something non-or-less traditional. I met her at The Green Fair on Sunday and imagine my surprise this is the same woman whom I had been watching for 2 years on you tube. Knowing myself if I had gotten the tattoo I would always want to be getting them. After thinking about it I walked back to her booth and got my first henna tattoo. I LOVE IT! I told her to do whatever tickled her fancy and she gave me much more than I paid for. She does wonderful work, making sure I knew how to take care of it. I had the pleasure of being Heather's first client at the Celtic Rock Festival in Newport, RI on the 23rd of August.
