Outstanding dinner! With the many choices available I went with the fried chicken which was very juicy and delicious! The baked beans were some of the best I've ever had! The coleslaw was so-so but still decent. As far as ambiance, they have a bar side and dining room side and they have some old school touches to go along with some more modern updates. This ended up being a cool stop on our road trip since it wasn't a standard chain restaurant near our hotel. There's lots of dark wood inside and an older, comfy feel to the place. We both ordered a $20 sirloin filet and added black and bleu for $2 extra. For my sides I chose a baked potato and wild rice. Pretty darn good! They had Guinness on draft and a drinkable red wine for me, and the drinks were reasonably priced. For beer selection they had eight draft beers and nine bottles. They were playing some good classic rock tunes and our bartender, where we also ate, was friendly and we enjoyed talking to her about travels. While it was fairly dead when we got there the place was full by 6:15 on a Tuesday. Overall our night here was a great value. I had no regrets, and I think Mr. R's only regret was that he didn't realize they were known for their hot dogs because it used to be a hot dog stand. It's on the menu as the Famous 1949 Original Hot Dog: two dogs with their famous sauce, cheese, onion and mustard. As a hot dog/burger aficionado, he felt like he had missed out by not ordering a hot dog! Hopefully we'll make it back through someday. read more

Stopped here on Friday evening and had dinner. Been several years since I had been in the bar area - and since then Henny's have absorbed the Gehauf's section. Though the decor is stuck in a different era, the food is different. Ordered the crab dip which was pretty bland overall but still acceptable - I liked the toast having melted Parmesan on them. For the entree I ordered the NY strip and sweet potato. The steak was pretty large, but it was lukewarm and was heavy gristle. The sweet potato was microwaved 59 be heated up and was fairly putrid in appearance and taste. Waitress was nice - would come back and probably stick to bar food and sit in that area instead. Cozy, friendly space off National Highway and attached to the Best Western. I ate on the bar side, there's a more formal dining area too. I had the steak which was cooked to my liking, and got the baked beans which had a surprising kick of heat to them! Would order again. Service was prompt and timely, although bar side seems to fill up quick. Will go again to try more of the menu! read more

Barely any real flavor. Onions were kind of funky too. Not really grilled. Almost raw. Fries were floating in grease from the meat. Not worth $23. Not worth the gas to drive here from the hotel. We decided to stop and eat at Henny's because their food was always excellent, but we hadn't been there for a long time. Big mistake, I'd would have rather remembered it the way it had been. My husband ordered a steak, which, when it came, was more like a minute steak. It was overcooked, maybe 1/4 inch thick and no seasoning what so ever. I ordered chicken that had been reheated and mash potatoes, that at one time may had been good, but reheated way too many times. Service seemed fine, came over twice and seemed pleasant. Thanks to Henny's for providing a quiet place for a relaxing dinner with relatives we have not seen in years! The broiled haddock was a hit, and the full slab of ribs was excellent. I had the Seafood Platter, which included the haddock, plus three giant butterflied shrimp, and a Maryland crab cake! Stopped here while charging the car at Sheetz across the street. What a gem! The server was extremely nice, the inside was decorated beautifully for the holidays, and the food was delicious. Not a bad stop on if you're on your way to Deep Creek Lake or anywhere in western Maryland. Probably one of the better options in LaVale, especially late. Friendly waitress was responsive, and put up well with our repeated, "just one more minute"s. Can't complain about the food choices or the actual food, either. I ordered the turkey, bacon, and swiss pannini and thoroughly enjoyed it. My three other companions enjoyed their meals as well. It's nothing special, just a local bar-food joint, but I'd stop there again. And definitely better than hitting the McDonald's or Arby's that are also in this little town. read more

Watch your wallet... disappointing and overpriced... waitress added on 20% gratuity to our bills even though our table of five adults was 2 separate checks, then didn't even tell us tip added in this and left us with 2 separate credit card receipts with blank spot where tip should go...luckily someone at our table looked at bill and noticed or waitress would gave ended up with 2 double tips. Kind of shady. Service here usually ok, food overpriced and pretty average. I got Caesar salad instead of regular side salad for ravioli dinner and upcharge of six dollars for this. For 2 dinners, 3 beers and one frozen drink over ninety dollars, including the 20% tip the waitress added in for herself. Save your money and go somewhere else. If your looking for a great steak go somewhere else. I ordered a 12oz Delmonico med. and my girlfriend who I took out for her birthday dinner got the filet mignon med as well. Our dinner came out and the waitress set our plates down and walked away. Cutting into my steak it was well done and dry. My girlfriend steak was dry, and well done. After 5 min we got the waitress attention and told her about the stake she replied with I'm sorry let me go and check what we can do. The waitress returned with options to correct the problem and we decided to order another steak. Second round of stake brought out and my 12 oz Delmonico was cooked to med and was just ok and lightly seasoned. My girlfriend stake was cooked to med rare and not hot the hole way through to where the center was raw and cold, she could only eat the outer side of the steak and not all of it. The waitress never check on us after bringing our second steaks to ask how they were. She dropped off our check and that was it. Probably won't go back and never going back for steak read more
