They show you around the area where they still make all the wines by hand using really old fashioned equipment. The wine tasting area is a small old building from the 1860's. Dark and quaint. They don't charge for tasting which is astonishing as you could taste you 10 or more wines. They have quite a range of varietals and some interesting looking sauces and jams for sale. Luke and Mark took care of us and were very friendly and informative. They recommended several other wineries to visit in the area.

Such an extensive list, the cellar door workers choose a 5-7 tasting flight from that for you, based on what's open and tasting great at that moment I imagine. All were good. There's three or four price brackets for their wines too, which means there's something for every wine lover regardless of budget. The two workers were funny and friendly - definitely "characters" which made the visit an entertaining one. The chap was great at bringing different groups of tasters chatting and laughing together, making it such a relaxed atmosphere. (The two dogs sleeping by the fireplace didn't hurt either). Bonus for us was that we were invited back the next morning fort a barrel tasting session. We spent a great hour down there in a small group tasting five or six early versions of wines we had tried the afternoon before, as well as some new ones. Completely free too. Amazing experience. Note that there was a $5 suggested donation to a charity for all tastings, which they didn't push on customers at all, but it's a worth cause so pony up if you do pop in. The wines are well worth it.

As you wind your…read moreway around the main shed you are confronted by a gorgeous Bavarian-styled chalet and upon entry with an all wood decor that just feels right. The gent who guided us through tasting claimed the owner had the contents made in Germany and shipped to and assembled at the winery!! Someone who does that is clearly serious and passionate. They have a small upstairs area where you can sit and sip and check out some local pottery, also made by the owner, or gaze out the window or at the tasting below. There is also an awesome room in the basement for group/private tastings which I have now put in my diary - I will be coming back. It's like a candle lit dungeon room and the owner runs a full tasting session for groups at a very affordable $15 per person - all wines are tasted. The wines they offer are overall cheaper than at other wineries and that in itself will bring me back. Not that I don't wish all winemakers every success but wine prices have been rising sharply and I have my limits, regardless of the occasion. They have a few wines at $10 which alone puts them in a unique position and the wines are not at all bad. They are lighter varieties, as indicated by the price, but worth tasting because not everything needs to cling to the roof of your mouth. Graciano and Montepulciano in particular drink very well and will give Sangiovese anywhere a run for its money. My wife enjoyed the Savagnin, their only white option. All their (3) shiraz offerings, especially the Gnadenfrei, were great, as was the Grenache, but one of the highlights was their fortified Lumberjack Touriga. While it was worth it to taste them, I'm not sure the pricetags are warranted, and the experience overall felt a bit stuffy and impersonal (but it could just be that the workers were distracted by the worries of an unprecedented heatwave and shifting winds that have led to precarious bushfire conditions)

The lady who greeted us, sat us straight down and started pouring us nips of moscato to try which she would talk about as we tasted. beautiful frizzante style, very light and summery, I recommend the Rosa version which is slightly less sweet. Of course Grant Burge is very good for Shiraz, The Barossa in general is big on this grape variety. We tried about 7 styles, generally at the end you are expected to buy a bottle, you would be crazy not to really unless you're on some sort of wine tour and you're stupidly drunk already. Very very nice indeed.

On a five point scale, they were: Wine Quality - 5 Wine Selection - 5 Setting - 4 Service - 5 They have a beautiful setting and some great wines. In particular I liked their single vineyard Riesling - Thorn, and their single vineyard SavBlanc - Kraft. I didn't buy any since they are distributed well in the US, although I doubt I'll get the single vineyard stuff outside Australia.

This winery grows all their own grapes, and make ans store all of their wines on premise. It's a neat little proprietary operation.
