The prices reflected it being a beach restaurant but the food met/exceeded our expectations and the service really sealed the deal with professional yet personable staff. We had such a great meal that we came back for dinner on our last night too! I had their lobster caesar salad (not a very Portugese choice but still) and it was great with good portions, quality cheese, and plated beautifully. The couvert was also a great selection (though beware it comes with a small cost). We enjoyed a drink from their bar which was pretty and this was a great spot to watch a shoreside sunset. I just cannot say enough about how happy we were with our choice to stay here. The dogs are accustomed to hotel living in the USA, and felt right at home and really enjoyed themselves. Everyone was so friendly to them, staff and other guests as well! The pet amenity was THE BEST ONE I've ever received at a hotel and the dogs have stayed in hotels for about 300 room nights across the USA and now Portugal. The twins loved staying in the castle and still talk about it. The room (we had a suite) was very spacious and perfect for our family of 4 and two dogs. We never had to ask for anything because the hotel just put things where you expected to find them at every turn. The breakfast was absolutely wonderful. The selection was great and everyone had something to eat regardless of their dietary needs or wishes. Dinner was amazing too. The twins had octopus and loved it! The servers were all so friendly and accommodating! The reception staff were all so friendly and helpful. They really made sure we loved every part of our visit. The views are amazing, the castle is amazing, and the staff is the best I've encountered so far in Portugal.

The Troia Design Hotel is a lovely hotel but lacking several things that one would expect from a…read morehigh end hotel. For example, the fitness room had a water dispenser but it was empty, and there were no lights in the room so I could not workout after 5pm. Also, we had a full kitchen, but there were no plates or silverware. These seem like all easy fixes that should be included in such a high end hotel. My main problem was the way in which a serious bike accident was handled by the front desk team. My family and I stayed for one night and rented bikes from the hotel the next morning. As I was climbing a gravel road, the tire spun out and I landed on my feet, but my front leg hit a wire protruding from the front tire. This wire should have been covered by a plastic cap. The wire hit my shin and tore my leg up which resulted in an emergency room visit and 6 stiches. My children rode 3 bikes back to the hotel while my husband drove me to the ER. The 4th bike was hidden away from the street and the hotel was notified of the exact location of the bike and the accident that was the result of their neglegance. Later that day, the hotel receptionist, Inês Pinheiro, indicated that the bike was not located. I requested that they look again, sending exact GPS coordinates from the picture taken and requested a video call on WhatsApp so we could provide assistance locating the bike. Instead, the next day, they said the bike was still not found and I needed to call with a credit card to pay for the bike. Two days later, I had my Portuguese friend call only to find out that the bike manufacturer found the bike using GPS, but the hotel never notified me. We did everything to help the hotel locate the bike, while the hotel staff took zero responsibility for their neglegance. The staff seemed young and inexperienced. I hope the hotel management will find this feedback useful and address training issues with their staff.

It was large enough to have all the amenities yet small enough to receive personal attention. The food was exceptional featuring local cuisine. I tried the salmon tartar and the venison on a bed of risotto. The venison was tender and cooked to perfection. It is hot during the day but cools off at night. I slept with the window open which I can't do in the city. I would return but I would be prepared for cooler evenings.

The selection was great, something for everyone and all very much restaurant quality (*not* the typical Marriott "breakfast included" fare) Pasteis de Nata had very good flavor and texture. The other pastries were fresh and abundant. The bacon was done in a way to be sort of addictive, very thin and not fatty but still tender. The coffee machines made just about any style coffee you might prefer short of a "flat white"; The cappuccino and cafe latte were smooth and not bitter. The restaurant service was exceptional, the staff charming and helpful. ( I feel terrible I can't remember her name... but the young lady with the piercing on the bridge of her nose was wonderful) The hotel restaurant (breakfast) ambiance was quite nice with the interior decor and pool view with the sun coming in through the floor to ceiling windows in the morning. The open kitchen with the view of the chef and staff is a nice touch. As a Marriott Bonvoy gold member, I was provided with a complementary room upgrade to a pool view room. Really appreciate that! The room was nice although the bathroom was very snug. We couldn't figure out the air conditioning and the room was a bit hot and humid. Fortunately it was the right time of year to leave the windows open so we left the sliding glass doors open to the patio (second floor) and pool below. It was nice and quiet, so it worked out. There is only a water pot in the room, no coffee maker. That was a first for Marriott for me, not having a coffee maker in the room. Instead they provided instant coffee packets. There was a mini-bar with-drinks (not complementary, pay at checkout, haven't seen that in a while!). There was no fridge and no microwave; things I've come to expect at Marriott. We stayed only two nights so no big issue. The room had a little wear and tear showing but nothing terrible, most people wouldn't notice. The bathroom could use a little extra cleaning in the corners and in the grout. (Spray Clorox bathroom cleaner knocks that right out) The walk down to the beach and restaurants was fine for all but possibly small children. We didn't need a car; it would have been a hassle. Uber / Bolt was available for any serious transport. If using the public bus system in Portugal, you may need to take an Uber from the drop off from Lisbon. If you have a car, parking is complementary. A win either way. We Uber'd to Sintra to our next place for 51€, not horrible. Over all, we would stay again in a heartbeat, our first pick for Sesimbra.
