But in my many travels, I've learned that you'll never know what great treats you can get from local supermarkets, pharmacies, and convenience stores. Snacks, candies, chocolates, unique foods. Coop is a big retailer in Switzerland where you can buy a variety of things. They have huge aisles just for chocolates. Different Swiss brands, lots of different kinds and sizes, and some European brands as well. It can get pretty overwhelming when you have a tiny grocery basket. I picked up some Ovomaltine, Freya, Cailler, coop store brand chocolates (the dark truffles were divine), and Munz. They have self checkout kiosks so you can scan, bag, pay, and go on with your day.

Since Sprüngli is not available in the US, I kind of went a little overboard when shopping there…read moreand I even went twice (second time was as the airport). We also bought a cake to celebrate our friend's birthday. It was excellent of course! Sprüngli and Max chocolatier were our top two favorites of all the Swiss chocolate we had.

We stopped into this location as it appeared to be one of the largest I'd seen. The place is gorgeous, a treat lovers heaven. The cakes were stunning. I picked up a boxed set of assorted macaroons for my sons girlfriend and an assorted chocolate pralines box for my grandma. Service was so friendly and nice. I'd say this is a must visit for a special little gift for someone. Their prices were totally comparable to what you'd expect to pay at similar shops such as Ladurée Paris or other famous treat houses.

It's right by the airport. (And by that I literally mean inside the airport). So, it's super convenient for souvenirs while you're traveling. They sell them by the weight and oh my goodness! Each one is a bite of heaven. We ended up buying almost twelve or so and worried that we might have bought way too many. But, we quickly learned there's no such thing as too many. They are simply divine. Just a little bit of crunch and gooey deliciousness. My favorite one was the Rose with Strawberries. (at least I think it was strawberries... chances are it could also be raspberries!) But, honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the options. Another unusual one I enjoyed was the Strawberry Rhubarb. The only thing I would warn you about is watiting to long to eat them. They're sooo good the first day or two, but get stale if you wait a week. So eat up! While you're here, don't forget to pick up some truffles too! Those are just as good as the luxembergeli, but luckily last much longer. I didn't try any of the unusual flavors, but all their chocolate was the bomb. The white chocolate truffles were absolutely my favorite of all. I wish I could say I'll be back soon, but I guess I might not be able to come back. But, anytime I'm near I'll definitely try to come back soon. For now, I might just have to settle with international delivery for special occasions.

Confiserie Sprüngli now has an iPhone app and they ship Luxembergerli everywhere. You can order online or via the app. My favorites are the orange and champagne flavors-- out of this world. Chocolates, truffles, pralines, anything hazelnut are truly indescribably fine. I just received my first shipment and Luxembergerli and chocolates are in excellent shape and packaged ready to serve for a holiday party. Compare any macaron to the Luxembergerli and you'll be a fan no doubt. It's not cheap but the finest things in this world are not. It's a specially good treat for the right occasion. Migros is a big supermarket chain in Switzerland. Their stores vary from Express shops like at the…read moretrain station in Zurich to huge buildings. This particular station is like a neighborhood supermarket. They have everything you need for your home - May it be in the bathroom, home office, kitchen or dining room. They have cheeses and chocolates - things the Swiss are known for. Frey is a huge chocolate brand in Migros. Almost all of their shelves in the chocolate aisle is filled with Frey chocolates in different varieties. I picked up a basket-full of Frey chocolates and Ragusa chocolates. Any bar of chocolate that has hazelnuts, I bought. I skipped on the cheese and the raclette warmer/ melter - very tempting but I had no more room in my luggage. Easy checkout process using their self-service kiosk. Their (plastic) shopping bags are rather small so you might want to bring your own bag if you're planning to buy a lot of items.

A plus is that this is located directly across the street from my favorite Chinese/Asian supermarket in town, Lian Hua (at Berninaplatz) and next to the Migration Bureau. Downside: they don't carry decaf and there is no free tasting. - A bigger than usual Zurich city variety of various goods. Like large variety of party goods (cups, disposable utensils, etc) and office supplies. Lots of discounted "packages" of goods like laundry detergent, etc, available here. Also sells one off stuff like portable grills, BBQ sets, etc that are cheap and cheery (I don't use these as I use brand name BBQ utensils for my home). - Not extremely overcrowded. - A separate Tchibo section for those who care (I don't). - Reasonably priced items.

I was hesitant to come back here because of that horrible employee. But all is well on my most recent visit. I wasn't planning allowed to take pictures, I was given free samples so, I bought some chocolates this time around. I recommend their mate, elvesia and haselnuss (hazelnut) bonbons. Those were my selections on this visit. It's a small chocolate shop but they have everything their bigger store in Lucerne has. Hot chocolate, dragees, bon bons, truffles, spreads, chocolate bars, and ice cream. Their chocolates are some of the best in Switzerland. Their location is convenient. Their chocolates aren't the best but also not the worst - not as bad as American chocolate. They hail from Lucerne. This shop has two floors: first floor has ready-to-eat food: cookies, cupcakes, cake slices, and sandwiches. The first floor is busy and chaotic. The second floor is where you'll find chocolates and their chocolate wall. It's the only reason I came here. I wasn't planning on buying a lot of chocolate from here. They copied Sprüngli's Luxemburgerli. They didn't even change the name.

We were a bit disappointed by the options for breakfast at all but one of the paninis was already gone when we got there, though the one that remained--the Poulet Curry--was quite good. My struggles with European coffee continued with their latte macchiato but the cinnamon roll was quite good. We explored the chocolate floor as well but because we were on our way to Lindt, did not buy any so I cannot comment on if it was any good or not.

This is one of several branches throughout Switzerland. It is visited by tourists but also Swiss…read morefolks (like me). Prices might appear high at first, but compared to factory-made chocolate it is definitely worth the extra buck. They have nice Pralinés (with and without boxes) and other chocolate-related products. But we always come here for the chunks of fresh chocolate. Even though at first we weren't much into dark chocolate, that changed after trying some of these products here. They just taste different (and better) than their famous counterparts from Lindt / Cailler etc. Some of our favorites are the white "Glacier", the "Florentiner Milch" and the "Honig Milch". But the dark ones are somewhat the best. We love the "Orange Mandel", "Grand Cru Brasil", "Cabruca Baumnuss" and the lovely fruity "Brombeer Dunkel". All good stuff. You can ask for some samples if you're not sure and ask nicely. You can get it by weight or also in a nice tin can, stays fresher that way. Since their standard is equally high in any of their branches it doesn't matter you buy them here in Zurich, in Lucerne or wherever. Highly recommended. As a souvenir, as a gift....or just to treat yourself :)
