If there's one thing I love, it's a good burger. Is it basic to say it's my favorite food? Maybe. But I don't really care--burgers come in endless varieties, and it's surprisingly easy to make one that's just "meh." The burger from Heroes American Cafe, though, was pretty damn good. They know how to season their patties--the burger was juicy but not too greasy, and the double had the perfect meat-to-everything-else ratio. The bacon was spot-on too: the ideal mix of crisp and chew. I don't want my bacon dead, but I don't want it raw either, and they nailed that balance. I also grabbed a side of tater tots, and honestly, tots are almost always better than fries. These were perfectly salted and crisp, just how they should be. Heroes is absolutely a spot I'll come back to next time I'm in the area. If you're looking for a casual place with a solid burger--or just want a quick, satisfying takeout meal--this should definitely be on your list. read more

Place was busy as usual. Waitresses is always prompt to get a drink order, and promptly brings the drinks, then takes your food order. Onion rings came with our sandwich's. Absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly, but the two sandwiches were not great, the chicken sandwich was small and my patty melt had chopped meat, mayonnaise and lots of cheese, with very few onions. Not very good to say the least. Val's hamburger was the best of all, that's what I'd order if I ever came back. Place was clean but very open which means it's pretty loud, but that's just me. I've been here several times in recent years. It's a pretty impressive little pub/cafe. They offer very much "pub food", but much better than most similar places I've been. Really good sandwiches, impressive salads, and lots of fun sides, like onion rings and jalapeno poppers. They actually have a pretty extensive menu overall all! The only downsides are that it gets pretty noisy, and the service is usually so/so. You often have to get up and go and find a server to pay so you can leave, or to get something else that you need. But their food, and the friendliness of the wait-staff more than makes up for those small frustrations. read more

Bartender pressured my friend who was sober to drink. well his girlfriend made the attempt to flirt with my boyfriend. The regulars are also constantly over served and yelling profanities. I don't feel safe taking my kids here when you should be able to just be 21 and up bar not they care to ID. I used to love to take my family here but I don't know if it was a change of staff or what but I'm extremely disappointed. read more

I got a peices of foil in my food, the staff called me tubby in the kitchen when they clearly thought i couldn't hear,the bartender's girlfriend kept hitting on me while in an intoxicated state. It's not just a bad bar, it's the most disgusting establishment I've ever been in. read more

Placed a pickup order. Got a text it was ready. Walked over, was told a few more minutes. Waited over 20 minutes. On two sandwiches they got one wrong and forgot the side for the other. Nothing about the food made up for the bad service. read more

I was not thinking about doing a review on this place but man I don't gate keep. My burger was so so delicious and the potato tots were so crispy I had to tell you. Service is very rude here. Franklin ignored me the whole time and had a terrible attitude regarding me asking the wait time for my food. The restaurant was empty so I was shocked by how he treated me. Then I asked who is the manager 3 times before he said Chris. I asked for business cards he said they don't have any. Pretty typical dive bar, showed up in a Saturday when the library was closed. There was one person working the bar and the tables and did pretty well considering it was a full house. We ordered nachos which were unfortunately cold =\. I'd maybe come again for drinks as a last resort but otherwise still prefer the library which is a short walk away. Sorry! read more

This gem is snuggled right smack dab in the gorgeous park blocks of Portland. On Park near PSU this local bar offers big screen sports channels, outdoor dining, and outstanding foodie delectables. We reserved two tables after our City Tour and were provided with outstanding service and food. They have cocktails, beer and wine as well as an outstanding choice of many food selections. Generous portions abound with the Turkey bacon salad being just one of the items that hit it out of the ball park. read more

Excellent service. Absolutely amazing food. We had the NY Pastrami sandwich and Turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich. The food and the service was excellent. Only problem is there was a drunk guy sitting at the bar right next to our table loudly using the F word over and over while talking to the bartender, who was also our server. His drunken loud vulgarities ran customers out of the restaurant and me and my guest were very disturbed but we stayed since it was our first time. we also expected and hoped that the bartender would ask him to tone it down, but he never did. The restaurant appeared to be very clean, including the rest room, except for a thick layer of dust hanging from the vent just above our table. Owners need to decide if they want to be a great sandwich shop or the neighborhood watering hole where guys can come and get drunk before 3 pm. read more

Just left Heroes having ordered their Fish Sandwich and for the second time, it was less than pleasing to the pallet. I asked for chips and got crumbs. The manager said that she just opened the bag... Yea, right! (I get better chips from a vending machine.) The deep-fried fish wasn't golden brown but rather a dark brown. Like the fish was either overcooked or that it was cooked in old grease. I went to pick up the sandwich to take a bite and it fell out of the bun and onto the table. I was a cook and kitchen manager for over thirty years and I vary rarely if ever, complain about the food and the service. Won't be wasting my money there anymore. I'd rather walk down the street and get a sandwich from Starbucks. The problem is that the so-called manager tried to pull the wool over my eyes not knowing that I had spent well over thirty-five years in the restaurant business: And, there is nothing anyone says about how things are or should be done. That was what set me off. Young people today don't understand that presentation is just as important as the quality of the food they are serving or cooking. In this case, they failed miserably. Young people today have no work ethic, no pride, and most importantly no experience and little regard for quality service. My apologies, John. read more

The bartenders Mac n Mike are great! Friendly, no tude, and great service. Anthony is cool and being trained by the best. The food is really good, way above "typical" bar food with reasonable prices. I don't recommend the $1.00 wings available at happy hour. There not the same as the mature, meaty wings on the menu they're like wings made from teenage chickens killed before their time. Nice selection of beer and wine and YES they have cocktails to wash down that burger if you feel like it. read more

Online ordering and take out service was great but the food wasn't very good. The two burgers were soggy and crushed. Only one bite of the Blue Cheese Burger had a hint of blue cheese and there was bacon on it which wasn't advertised and overpowered the other tastes. If you are going to serve food, find a cook who is capable of at least making a burger that is worth $10 read more

He highlighted to us the baked good that he felt came out well that day. The chocolate croissant was flakey and well balanced and the canele was the perfect little sweet treat. The blueberry muffin was jam packed with blueberries. We also ordered the rose croissant which was fun to eat. The rose was not too overpowering and added a bit of uniqueness. 10/10 great way to start the day.

The space is cozy and inviting, with an open kitchen right in the center as you walk up the slight incline from the entrance. There's a charming little café area to the right and restaurant seating to the left. The large windows overlooking the city from this beautiful old building create the perfect atmosphere, especially on a cold, rainy day. We were greeted with fresh, hot beignets to start, which was such a treat. My husband enjoyed the Mexican Mocha, and I had the London Fog, both were perfect for warming up on a chilly morning. We couldn't decide what to order, so we split the Huevos Rancheros, and wow... it was AUHMAZING too! It was loaded with zucchini, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, spinach, and caramelized onions. We added linguiça sausage, which took it over the top. Every bite was delicious. To make the experience even better, Georgia brought us a sample of the Portuguese Fried Rice, which was incredibly thoughtful and gave us another reason to come back and try more of the menu. By the end of our meal, our bellies were full, we were warm and cozy from our drinks, and we were already talking about our next visit. So glad we found this gem thanks to Yelp. We recently took a staycation in downtown Portland and decided to have brunch there. At 1030 on a Saturday morning, we were still able to get a table. It was crowded, but the noise level was do-able. Service was excellent, very friendly and efficient. All of the waitstaff seemed very relaxed, which I thought was great. They bring beignets to every table as a starter. They are light, airy and not too sweet. For breakfast, I had the Ed's scramble, which had a ton of veggies in it, but also cheese. It was served with a ranchero sauce and sour cream. This was very, very good. My husband had the chili and cheese omelet, he said it was great and it looked really good. This is an excellent dining spot that has been in Portland for years. I can see why.
