It was such a fun experience being able to learn about them and give them some pets in the parking lot. Once we were finished we went inside to warm up and check out the library. Again, it's very tiny, but full of wonderful displays, books, activites, and a nice spot for the community to get their library fix. I chatted with one of the employees who was so friendly and kind. They have computers for internet access, copier, printing, and wifi.

They have a large parking lot and the space is open and bright. I loved the hold pickup lockers near the parking lot - I wish my neighborhood branch had them. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the main entrance, so be aware for those with mobility issues. It is flat, though. I always love checking out the new book section of any library, and was able to find it right away. I browsed the cookbook section and found some CDs to check out. The whole library was very clean and well-organized and I had no issues using the self checkout. They even have an enclosed booth for making calls. So glad I was able to visit this branch - even though it's not super close to where I live, I wouldn't hesitate to stop in the next time I'm in the neighborhood!

This is the Northside branch of the Herrick District Library, located right next to the fire…read morestation and in front of Mapleview Animal Hospital. I have such fond memories of childhood afternoons spent here with my mom and brother! It's definitely a fraction of the size of the downtown branch, but you can place a hold for any item and have it be transferred to pick up here if it's more convenient. The small rows of computers are usually busy and full. They have a great selection of movies, magazines, and CDs. The stand near the entrance usually has an impressive variety of new and/or relevant titles. There's a decent sized children's section, and I know this branch holds kid-friendly programming, especially in the summer. I always loved participating in their summer reading challenges. All in all, this location is clean, organized, with very friendly staff and is a great way to get the necessary library resources to the Northside of Holland!

That's crazy. And I just got a game called wreckfest and that's probably the best game. I got there and I put it among us on hold on the website and the fact that you can do it on the website at your house. That's cool and good thing. They're remodeling this location because it's not gonna lie. If they have upstairs. They're gonna have way more books, and I forgot when it's gonna open.

Usually the library itself is pretty much filled up, but I was always lucky enough to find the last empty table. You can bring drinks, food to eat, but it is rather quiet inside the library. I would love to come here to just sit and read on any weekends as well.

The library features a huge mechanical book-retrieving device that snags the text you're searching for. It is pretty cool, however, the device (which I believe is becoming more popular in more recent libraries) does eliminate the option of browsing for yourself. You can no longer stroll through the library and flip through the texts that catch your attention. Additionally, the seating capacity is minimal, granted it is a small library. Overall, I do like this library and would recommend it to anyone needing to get some work done.

There's ample parking with two lots, and it's right by a bus stop. One of my favorite things about this branch is the whiteboard near the entrance, which always lets me know what "Day" it is (something fun/silly like "national don't be scared of bugs day") and has a fun prompt. One of my favorite prompts recently was, "which medieval cat are you?" and had several different printouts of medieval cats in varying stages of terror. It always makes me smile and I like reading what other people write for each prompt. The new book shelves are always full of great selections, and I love the staff picks table, where I often find something new to me to read. I utilize the library's printer on a monthly basis (you can print up to 50 pages per week for free) and it's easy to send documents from home that you can then release when you arrive. Just be sure to only send things to the printer during open hours! The drive up book drop is nice, and it checks in your books as you drop them into the chute. I do sometimes wish they had the after hours hold lockers like I've seen at other branches. I love GRPL!

At least, that's kind of the impression I was left with from the Allendale Library. I can't knock their book selection or services offered at all because I'm not even a card-carrying member of this place. I live in the wrong county. But, I'm starting to think that's not such a bad deal after all. The staff here, although obviously competent, seems to really not give a crap about the patrons inside their workplace. I cannot tell you how many times I've been there only to find unruly children running amok, people chatting LOUDLY, cell phone conversations, and even the occasional person chowing down on some McDonald's or Burger King with their loud-ass paper sack and all. Come on... f'real? Yeah, they might have a decent book selection. They DO offer free WiFi (which is why I go there so much) and it CAN have moments where you might actually feel like you're in a library. But that seems to be few and far between for me. I wonder what happened to the library and when it became THE place to socialize. You would think with Allendale growing so rapidly because of GVSU, residents would find better places to take their social lives and uncontrollable kids. Allendale gets two stars just because of the free WiFi and because it looks like the place is kept up nice enough. However, if you're planning on actually doing anything that requires much concentration or anything much more than running in to grab a book and running right back out, well, I'd probably go check out some other library instead. This place kind of blows.
